Restless Rant
Week of October 5 - 9:

I'd like to give thanks for the ray of light that was the Chloe and Chance date this week on The Young and the Restless. Although the dramatic writing and acting of many scenes this week was fantastic - the dominance of tragedy and sorrow remained, and was starting to feel exhausting. Adam was still up to his twisted tricks as well. The memorial was great, though, and very well done. Here are my comments on the week:

Heart Decision: Once again, everyone's acting was magnificent. I felt really tired of the hospital scenes during the show, but surprised myself by shedding a few more tears as they wheeled Victor and Colleen into surgery together in the last scene on Monday. I think the dramatic music that was playing had a lot to do with it!

Ashley:
She's acting 'back to normal', but this intelligent woman hasn't twigged yet that she actually did not give birth! I just can't get over that!

Sharon's Release:
Some of the writing just doesn't make sense. Someone who has been admitted to a mental facility for emotional troubles, and who loses a baby, would be kept in for observation longer due to the additional stress and grief - not released early to cope on their own!

Mac Visits Lily:
Made my top ten list of most boring scenes in the history of Y&R. I'm not saying the character of Mackenzie isn't a likeable girl, but sometimes when she's in a scene it's like someone hit the snooze button!

Neil's Return: I was very glad to see him back - it's been strange having him missing through all this stuff happening to Victor, and to his daughter, Lily. I'm getting tired of him appearing in doorways with Devon glued to his side, though. He needs an interesting storyline of his own.

Deacon and the Terroni: It was so exciting when Deacon first showed up in town and lit up this storyline. Unfortunately, because of the incredible loss of momentum and continuity due to "The Adam Show," this story seems to have been cut off at the knees. The flirtation between Victoria and Deacon, the intensity of Daniel having 72 hours to produce the Terroni - it's all fizzled because of the interruptions. Plunking Gloria into the middle of it was funny for five minutes, but her schemes have become too tiresome, so this also drags the story down. I hope they have something great in store for these characters once this painting is dealt with…

Adam: Even though I don't put anything past this caricature of a character anymore, I wasn't pleased to see him steal a baby's ashes - morbid. Is this Passions now? Yes, ho hum, there are several clues that he is behind this - Billy saw him in the funeral home, Sharon spoke to him about the ashes, and he labeled the box 'Baby Newman' rather than 'Baby Abbott,' but honestly, does anyone really expect him to get caught? The writers obviously want to keep this character around, and if anyone figures this out he will be absolutely irredeemable. His crying jag on the steps in the Ranch left me thinking, "That was awkward." I can't feel sorry for him because he has no good reason to have become such a monster. He was raised, and loved, by Hope and Cliff for goodness sake! I don't care how much regret he suddenly shows, there's just no explanation for him having sunk so low.

Colleen's Memorial: Well, we all know I love a gathering - this was no exception - it was well done - lots of interaction between characters, and a good pace. I applaud the decision to have Colleen's memorial be a 'celebration.' It was still sad, but there were moments, such as Jack doing Zumba, that broke the heaviness. Kudos.

Nick/Sharon/Phyllis:
First of all, I don't believe Sharon would have gone off on her own to spread the ashes without including Nick - that's so unlike her character. As for the scene between Sharon and Phyllis, as much as both actresses do a great job, I just can't muster up any enthusiasm where this triangle is concerned anymore. What did Sharon think of Phyllis's visit? Was Phyllis being sincere? Been there, done that. I want different stories for these characters! I'm so over seeing Nick standing across from one or the other of these women, gawping at them, and saying he needs to 'be there' for the other one, or worse, one of them sending him to the other one. This whole triangle has gone beyond stale to the point where it's almost a parody of itself.

Chloe/Chance: A romantic date! Best part of the week! When Chance walked into the living room to take her on their date and gave her that smoldering look, I went weak at the knees. Their date was lighthearted and funny - which has been so sorely missing from this show! Their little make-out session afterward was great too - especially when Chance stopped the action and left us (and Chloe) wanting more - awesome! BTW, Chloe and Billy still had oodles of chemistry when they talked in the coffee house this week, so I'm thinking this is going to be a really enjoyable triangle when it gets going!

Kudos, once again, to all of the actors performing these draining emotional scenes day after day - great chops! The writing for some of these dramatic scenes has been top-notch too. I don't know why they've chosen to have the Y&R become so dark and tragic, but I actually felt weary from it at times this week - literally drained from watching so much sorrow. The news that Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) has hit a roadblock in his contract negotiations and will last appear on November 2nd, has only added to the heavy mood surrounding the show recently. The bit of romance we were treated to this week was like a drink in the desert. We really do enjoy that stuff, writers!

ITA with your points there. Really liked Chloe and Chance together. Chance is adorable. They get my WoW of the week. I feel like Nick/Sharon could be the next Victor/Nikki but EB still is the glue of this show. IF you ask me Glo and Jeff are responsible for Colleen's death not Victor. Lately these shows make me sad the last good show I saw was when Vikki left the last time. So without them they better do something with the rest of this mess.

Great rant as usual Candace!

I agree about Ashley. Very hard to believe that she doesnt know she didnt give birth! I am also having a hard time swallowing that she is fine now and giving her brothers advice. Anywho, on to Sharon. I also think that it is WAY out of character for her to spread the ashes alone. She would have never kept that from Nick. Secondly, the scene with her and Phyllis was just plain weird. Even though I may think that Phyllis' sympathy was real (about Sharon losing another child) it was awkward that she picked right this second to go to her. I do think there is a part of her that is "relieved" that she wont have to compete with another Sharon/Nick baby. I wish they would let Sharon come to a place where she has peace. Great Acting by Sharon Case! Outstanding!

Glad to have Neil back as well but I do find id awkward that he and Devon have no real storyline goin on even with Lily. The Winters family is in the dark. I was moved by the scene with them going to the service for Lily and including her in the phone call.

LOVIN the Chance/Chloe scenes. So light hearted and fun. It makes you want to see more of them. But in the end I cant wait for the triangle of Chance/Chloe/Billy. Should be awesome and HOT HOT HOT!

Dumbfounded on the events surrounding EB's contract. Still in shock with that one!

Cant wait to get out of the hospital and back into the offices! Have a great weekend everyone!!

Awesome rant as usual! Loved the Chloe/Chance date. it was light and fun which was needed. And EH really threw herself into that apple bobbing! Still love her with Billy but he needs some competition-after the way he's acted she can't make it too easy for him to come back. This future TRI is about the only thing I am looking forward to anymore.

Not really suprised that the Mac/Lily scene was boring, Mac has that effect. She is a nice person just really boring.

I am sick of "The Adam Show". Just when you think he can't get any lower than he already has he steals Sharon's baby and then steals some ashes to give to her.

The painting storyline needs to go. It isn't the least bit interesting.

Phyllis and Sharon was awkward. Phyllis may have been genuine...but I doubt it. Mostly I think she is relieved that she won't have to share Nick with Sharon and their baby any time soon. And seriously-they need to give the baby back!

Fantastic rant Candace as always.
I loved the send off they had for Colleen. I thought it was nicely done.
The highlight of the week by far was Chance and Chloe's date!
I really love these two together. My heart melted when Chance rang the doorbell to his own home to pick up Chloe for their date...Such a gentleman! I too am looking forward to the triangle when the storyline picks up. Billy boy is going to be so jealous!!
Completely over and done with Adam as far as I am concerned. I almost fell out of my seat when I saw him having his emotional fit on the stairs! It's a little too late for that at this stage of the game.
I also agree with you in that the art storyline has become dull to say the least. What once was a exciting and enjoyable storyline has now become a complete drag.
As I stated last week the character of Victor Newman is one that you love to hate and hate to love, but he is the rock of the show in my opinion and I am deeply saddened that an amicable agreement could not be reached between both parties. Eric Braeden will definitely be missed and I really hope that his departure from the show will not reflect in lower ratings. Fingers crossed.
Have a good weekend Candace!

Candace, "Some? of the writing just doesn't make sense"
Ya think?

Wow, Candace, you are just great! I agree with you entirely on all of it!!!

I'm so tired of seeing these dark and murky storylines...I couldn't even cry this week, I'm all tired and cried out...lol...I wonder if Colleen will haunt Victor now...that would be delicious!

To tell you the truth I have completely stopped watching Y&R the minute Sharon and "clueless" went into labour at the same time...give me a freakin break!!! that was the most predictable story and has only happened in every soap including this one about 8 million times. I would really like to see at least one person have a baby on this show and have it normally with friends and loved ones gathered to celebrate. Now that would shock the hell out of everyone because as soon as someone becomes pregnant you already know something horrible is going to happen and it will happen in one of three ways...the writers are becoming tiresome and predictable. And would someone please explain why Colleen is gone and Adam is alive...seriously kill me know. I will continue to read the rants on fridays to see what crap has gone on and when things lighten up and Sharon gets her baby back (wich again we know will happen sometime before she is age then I will start watching again. Thanks Candace for the weekly updates its good to know I have missed nothing. Until next friday have a great weekend.
