Restless Rant
Week of August 10 - 14:

I'm finding it really difficult to get fired up about discussing The Young and the Restless this time around. The show has been mostly lackluster the past week, with a few exceptions. Some of the writing and acting we've been treated to in recent months has set the bar pretty high - and expectations for this show are always high anyway. I'm finding the contrasts between the 'highs' and 'lows' of Y&R right now to be very extreme. We've been treated to some excellent writing and acting in recent months, but at the same time, have suffered through some pretty strange, dragged-out, and disappointing storylines as well. Nothing makes me happier than to rave on about Y&R, so it's sad when discussing it feels laborious. Here goes:

Addam's Family: Sometimes, when I'm having difficulty 'feeling' a storyline, talking to one of the actors involved, and getting their point of view, gives me a new outlook on the situation. So after speaking with Eileen Davidson (Ashley), I had hoped to be able to channel her enthusiasm for this story and start looking at it with new eyes. The result? Although I can clearly understand how this is great for the actors to play, as a viewer, it's still not working for me. I'm over it. The injection of the Abbott brothers into the mix hasn't remedied the numbness that has set in. My two cents: the twists in the story, which should be very exciting, are ruined by the predictable, certain knowledge that Adam will wiggle his way out of everything. For example, when Abby found the camera, did anyone really believe for a minute that Adam would finally be caught? Me neither - yawn. The acting, as usual, is top-notch, but some aspects of the story have dragged on way too long.

Victor:
So, now, not only has Adam continued to dupe Victor in spite of numerous red flags such as Adam being able to choose a good wine, Adam telling the unbelievable story about inmates sticking needles in his eyes, etc., but we are supposed to believe that Rafe may figure it out before The Great Victor Newman? Mary Jane is also getting the better of The Mustache, and as of this week, JT's got Vic's number too! What's happening?! I have to mention, though, that I love how Victor has turned this whole thing with Mary Jane around in his own mind so that she's solely responsible for everything - such a talent for letting himself off the hook!

Nikki: Since we've had bazillions of emails asking about Nikki's fate, suffice it to say that while the character hasn't been seen on the show since it appeared that Ashley hit her, Melody Thomas Scott is not leaving Y&R, so Nikki will reappear before too long.

Paul/Heather/Rafe:
Doug Davidson (Paul) has rocked his emotional scenes recently. Vail Bloom (Heather) has too - nice to see her get some material she could sink her teeth into! It was nice to see these two bond a little this week - so often Heather comes across as cold. I also like the Rafe character - not afraid to stand up to anyone, even Victor - admirable! I hope Rafe brings Adam down.

Chloe/Mac/Billy/Chance: I enjoy this storyline when it's on. I'm interested in all of the characters except Mac, who even when she's lashing out at Chloe, still doesn't have much zing factor. I was surprised by Mac revealing her relationship with Billy to Chloe - and being so vehement about it - methinks Mac was channeling some of the anger she feels toward herself (for betraying her own values) at Chloe. I always perceived Mac as a very smart person - could she not see that, obviously, Billy enjoys Chloe's attention and his connection with her - even if he has been taking it for granted. First clue - hiding his relationship with Mac in general (hence the trailer), second clue - making no moves to initiate a divorce or to even tell Chloe that he was with Mac. I'd say it doesn’t bode well for Mac in this quadrangle. As for Billy/Chloe/Chance - can't wait for the fireworks!

Soaps.com
Sharon/Nick/Phyllis: One can only hope that this psychiatric facility storyline will give us an interesting look into Sharon's mind, and some great material for Sharon Case to act out. What will probably happen is nothing of the sort. At this point, I'm not even happy to see these characters on screen. Yes, Noah's a smart mouth, but I feel his pain - it's all just ridiculous! Some compare this to the ongoing triangle of Victor/Ashley/Nikki, but I can't ever remember Victor being so wishy-washy and indecisive as to change his mind about who he 'belongs with' numerous times within the space of a few months! Victor's love affairs with Nikki and Ashley have spanned decades, with plenty of other story for the characters, not to mention other loves, in between. The writers have definitely not done the same justice to the story of Phyllis/Nick/Sharon - they should have taken their time and kept the characters true to form.

Nina: I don't buy her as a meddling mother - not after what she was put through when she was younger by Jill and Katherine. I also feel like she'd have more confidence in the way she raised Chance, and would have respect for his choices. I liked that she comforted old pal, Paul, but not sure if I would like them as a couple - might be weird with the whole Christine history…

Devon/Tyra: Yuck! This was just not a place that I wanted to see the writers go. People just don't sleep with those they have grown up believing to be members of their immediate family! Even if Devon was harboring a physical attraction for Tyra, what's her excuse? The jury is still out on whether Roxanne should have gone right in there and got in their faces. She probably dealt with it the classiest way possible. Not sure what prompted the writers to do this storyline, but it's a loser as far as I'm concerned - absolutely.

Neil/Cane/Lily: I still can't understand why Neil is causing Lily all this grief over Cane! He's doing exactly what he's accusing Cane of potentially doing, which is causing her loads of unnecessary stress! Neil is a smart man, so I don't get this emotional number he's doing on Lily. That said, kudos to Lily for standing up to Neil. I do like the family drama!

As per my pet peeve, some stories like Deacon/Amber and Kay/Jill went MIA, and I'm feeling definite fatigue with some of the other major storylines going on, which means that the fast-forward button was looking good much of the time. I'm so hoping to see Y&R bump it up a notch. Since I like to end the column on a positive note, I'll throw ya' a bone - next week will bring some hot scenes when a marriage veers off track, and Deacon returns to the canvas!

Be certain to share your thoughts on the week - makes no difference if you agree or disagree - Soaps.com loves to hear from its readers! Have a great weekend!

As always Candace you are able to sum up how I feel. The whole Devon/Tyra thing is just Ick Ick Ick. Devon is such a great character with awesome potential and they throw Icky Tyra at him. It just doesn't work for me. I'd really like to see Karen back, I just can't get into Tyra's character.

S/P/N - Predictable and boring; I am just not interested anymore.

Now that Kitty is gone I just have Deacon to look forward to these days. Can't wait til next weeks scenes.

Hey Candace

I agree with you about the Addam's Family. how can so many educated people that live in this house be so DUMBFOUNDED!!!! DUH!!!

Question? has the low economy got TGVN stumped!!! with all the idiot S/L's. plus clues right there in his face if they were any clearer he would trip and fall on them.

I'm hoping Nicki ain't dying, if she was she'd be a rotten corpse by now.

TO ME: Mac is like the Tyra character... can't get a connection there.

I SUGGEST:
the Nick saga is just that..... it's turning out to be a sopping soggy saga that ain't worth the screen rtime any more it has been done to death.

I don't like Nina she is too much like Olivia a nosy busy body!!!!

Devon was fighting a smile to Neil about sleeping with Tyra. ewwww!!!!!
who cares who Tyra sleeps with? I wished she'd just pack her bags and leave and not ever come back. Devon and Neil are both jerkazoids!!!

this weekend I'm on my way to G/C to burn some couches and kick some booties to get on the ball with these ridiculous story lines. we need y/r writer's to get the fans excited again. these summer stories have been a drag. like the economy!!! if the show gets canceled... no wonder!!! it will be because, all of us die hard fans are getting tired of the same ole drug out mess. they need to give this fast pace generation some bang for our time.

I just love reading your rants Candace. For the first time in a while, I am finding it hard to have anything to write about. The past 2 weeks have been dull to say the least, and I am hoping that next week will be much better.
I must comment on the Devon/Tyra hook-up. I about lost my lunch when I saw those scenes. Totally sick in my opinion. I have absolutely no idea why in the world the writers wanted "to go there", unless it was their way to end Tyra's storyline so she could leave town. Nonetheless, they could have come up with something better.
At this stage in the game, no interest in Phick/Phack/Shick/Shack, or the Addamm's family.
I definitely am interested in Chance and Chloe. These 2 have chemistry together, and I can't wait for Billy boy to get a taste of his own medicine.
Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for better things to come in the next few weeks.
Have a good weekend Candace, and thank-you.

Wow Candice, thanks for the rant. I don't think I've ever seen you so negative, but rightfully so. Are the writers gonna take note and do something about these storylines? Or is Y&R gonna go down the same path as GL, etc?

Devon/Tyra--YUCK! Thanks to the info/spoilers I was forewarned and got a lot of use from the fast forward button.

All the rest was a snoozefest. I have several days worth on my DVR that I haven't even watched yet. If/when I do watch them, I will probably use the fast forward button a lot.

Hi Candace,

Devon/Tyra:

They get: "The Yuck Don't Do It, But Did It Anyway Smack Down Smack!"

Tyra wishes that she'd never done it with Devon and so do us as viewers!
Yuck!
This scene was so awful to watch, but thank goodness it was very short.
It had the adopted into the family "ill factor" goings on here that ended in really getting the "ewwwww that's nasty" part almost incest.
The writers should've kept this in Devon's private brain away from us loyal viewers!

Nikki's been outside, half-dead, or recuperating in some good samaritan's digs for a long time. 'Hope she doesn't turn up with amnesia...

Awesome rant as usual! Devon and Tyra is just plain icky. How I wish they wouldn't have gone there but of course they did. Liked Roxanne confronting them on Friday though.

I liked Adam when he first started going after Ashley, the miscarriage was my breaking point and it's all gone downhill from there. Now i just want to see it finally end. Just when you think someone has wised up and caught him, he wiggles free.

No matter how much they try to forcefeed this Mac/Billy thing it ISN'T WORKING! I feel nothing when I see their scenes together and having Mac of all people confront Chloe, lame. Red flags are being ignored and I can't wait till the Billy/Chloe/Chance.

Neil needs to chill. Lily is an adult and can think for herself. I get the whole protective parent angle but he has taken it to extremes.

I literally yelled "NOOOOOO" at the t.v. when Davon and Tyra
landed on the sofa! yuckeeee! Is that all the writers could come up with for those two? Didn't like it.

I hope that Rafe discovers everything out about Adam. He's turning out to be a pretty smart guy.

Noah has more sense than his parents. He is right-on point
about them.

Think MJ will try to pose as Mac?

I still like Victor. No matter what he says, or does, he still holds your attention.

Not too many post today. Guess many viewers are dissatisfied with todays' events.

Gotta tell ya. The show is falling and it can't get up.

I am getting sick of watching Adumb, as well. Chris Engen, you got out, and left. You are the lucky one.

A year ago. Gloria and Jill were fighting over Jabot. Cane and Brad were fighting over the Presidency of Jabot! Katherine was getting enmeshed in Kevin's web of lies. We were finding out about Michael's dad!

What do we have this year?

Adam is still fooling everybody at the Newman Ranch?!?!?!

Let me tell you, if it weren't for Mary Jane; I would be changing the channel!

If we have to put up with another year of Shick, Prick, Jachyllis, or whoever... out of those 4, I am going to be sick.

Time to do a DAYS and bring in the Genoa City slasher.

Tyra and Devon? That's the best they can do with Bryton McClure?

Wow. I feel that Maria Bell should just throw names in a hat, and pair people up.

Oh, she's already doing that. Let's see.... [July] Adam and Rafe'. [August] Adam and Heather. [Sept] Adam and dead Sabrina.
