Restless Rant
Week of January 19 - 23:

Everything feels like it's dragging this week - with the possible exception of Esther's rapidly improving love life! I find the period before a sweeps week is generally slower, as the writers stretch storylines out so that they reach their climax during the big ratings time. Victor's revenge, Katherine's identity, Chloe's baby, Nick/Phyllis/Sharon, are all stories being affected by the slowdown. Here's how the week looked:

Esther/Roger:
Wow! Did she have a glow or what?! Things happened pretty fast for Esther and Roger, but show a starving woman a meal… It's been a long, long time since Esther had any nookie, but naturally, the poor trusting soul is going to pay a hefty price for grasping a shot at happiness. How about that grouchy naysayer, Jill?! Raining on Esther's parade and then firing Roger! Jealous much? This woman may need her engine tuned up even more than Esther did! The one good point Jill made was that Esther might have been a bit more cautious in light of her past 'errors in judgment' - like the one who got Rex Sterling killed! Considering Roger has Clint Radison on speed dial, it's not likely this is going to turn out any better…

Clint Radison: It seems there are mixed feelings about his return. Some don't want to see the past revisited in this manner, getting the sense that it's an old tale about to be recycled. Others are excited to see a familiar face, no matter how devious, and welcome the intrigue, and the possible storyline for Gina. Personally, I'm going with it for now, and I hope Gina gets involved, but here's hoping it doesn't mean the Katherine identity story is going to be dragged out beyond belief - it's already a stretch asking us to accept that she wouldn't have had a DNA test by now. It seems everyone on Soaps.com has thought of this, but only one character on the show has raised the idea - Michael - and bizarrely, he's waiting to get permission from the court! Hello, you can pay to have one done!

Adopting Ana: I have a few things to say about this storyline. First, I want to see more of Rafe - he's adorable! Second, Karen suddenly deciding that she wants to adopt Ana is bizarre. Karen has made all of her choices in the past very carefully and with much deliberation - this is just totally out of character for her! Makes no sense. Third, viewers haven't really connected with Tyra, and making her kiss a newly married man, then schizophrenically bounce from fighting for her daughter, to leaving town, is not helping matters any! I'm looking forward to my upcoming chat with Eva Marcille, who plays Tyra, perhaps she'll be able to shed a little light on where this character is coming from, and help us gain some understanding of her motivations!

Victor/Ashley/Abby/Brad:
This week's episodes have left a bad taste in my mouth for the Abby character. They're really writing her as spoiled and selfish! Mind you, many teen girls do act that way - it's just irritating to watch. I'm also wondering what Ashley is thinking. Moving her daughter in with Victor at the drop of a hat is bad enough, but allowing him to go ahead and try to buy Abby's affections is a definite parenting no-no! Ashley is a smart lady, and I'm hoping that when she gets wind of what Victor is trying to do to Brad at Newman Enterprises that she'll see the light - he's trying to cut Abby's father out of her life, regardless of how she might feel about it! How about Victor's excuse to Brad that he doesn't want him on the Board anymore because it's a family company - so, all of the other Board members are relatives?! It's so annoying, but also sad in a way - Victor has to control everything and everyone in order to feel secure in his life. I wonder if JT and Victoria will tattle about Brad's corporate espionage?!

Chloe/Cane/Billy/Lily/Shiva: I found it fairly entertaining to watch Billy and Chloe running circles around that Indigo party, trying to keep Shiva Rose from informing Cane and Lily about their cozy past, and telling everyone how 'great' they were together! Hilarious! Funny that Lily has picked up on Billy and Chloe's familiarity level, but Cane doesn't seem to notice that Chloe is inordinately interested in what Billy does. It was weird to see Lily comparing notes with Cane on how close Chloe and Billy might be - oh how things change! BTW, I love how they have Jack in on Billy's paternity secret - everyone needs a 'go to' person!

Sharon/Phyllis: Loved the Restless Style run-in between them! Their styles are so different, but both are formidable opponents in an argument! For two seconds they almost had Nick's best interests in common too, which is more than he deserves! However, their arguments are getting repetitive - writers need to move along. In spite of Phyllis's latest make up session with Nick at Restless Style, methinks that her insecurities, her latest antics (stealing the fax and meeting Brad), and his continued closeness with Sharon, spell trouble for this marriage.

Sharon at the Cabin: I enjoyed those 'memories' flashbacks with Brad, Nick, and Jack. Such a neat illustration of the many forms love can take, and of how things change - besides, there's nothing better than seeing the old hairstyles and clothes!

Paul/Nikki/Katherine:
Bravo Paul for having enough IQ points to realize that they need to find out either way if Katherine is actually alive. Good for him for taking a stand with the crotchety Nikki. The visit to Murphy's trailer with Nikki in tow was, again, a real disappointment - if Paul can tell it's Katherine by her mannerisms, why on Earth can't Nikki?! Her so-called 'con radar' isn't any better than her flimsy excuses for going to see Victor at the office!

Kevin/Jana/Amber/Daniel:
Together again! Woot! I love this foursome - always fun and entertaining. I was a little surprised that Jana jumped on board for a break and enter so easily, but I'm willing to buy into it for the payoff! Can't wait to see the caper!

Gloria and the Shares: I actually feel unhappy now when I see the orange jumpsuit appear on screen! I'm a huge fan of Judith Chapman's work, but the Gloria character is wearing on me lately. Her scheming is stale, stale, stale, as are her histrionics. I hope Maria Arena Bell can come up with something good for the character that makes her fun to watch.

Not a bad week, all in all! I must remark on how much I love the return to the core families and the renewed focus on Jabot and Newman Enterprises. It feels right! I'm eagerly awaiting the increased momentum of sweeps week in February!

Please be sure to leave a rant of your own, or add your thoughts to mine. It's totally fine to disagree - or to help me see another point of view. It's all in fun!

In last weeks Restless Rant, you said you were ready for more romance. You completely forgot to mention Katherine and Murphy's romantic evening. To me, this was the best thing that happened all week!

Hey Candace, I have ranted and raved all week long so i just have a small comment at this time. and so... i agree with you again on all points. i just wished they would keep the bradski and get him crancked up for some action. he has many areas to deal with to make plenty of s/'s there. they could keep him and get rid of tyra and ana. i know you get tired of me saying that over and over again but, aaahhhh
d/d is good at his craft and he just pops on the screen, and when the other two are on it's like you can't wait til they get on with it. with them it's like bla bla bal!!!

have a great weekend!!!!:)

Rebecca - their romance is sweet - unfortunately it's overshadowed by the identity confusion right now. I look forward to enjoying it once they settle into the Chancellor Mansion.

Candace,

Your synopsis of this week’s show was fantastic! Keep up the great work and continue to keep us involved.

The flashbacks were great. I don't like most flashbacks but these were short and to the point.

Hey Candace, I agree that several of these stories (Kay, Chloe) need to be wrapped up PDQ. Hopefully the sweeps will take care of that. There was one episode this week (Wednesday I think) that I watched the entire episode, every scene, start to finish, which hasn't happened in a looooooong time. So, for me at least, I guess it's getting better.

And yeah, what's up with the DNA test? Anyone can get one anytime. You only need a court order when someone is resisting (a potential father usually) and it has to be forced. And speaking of forced, this whole story is forced, I think the writers think we are stupid. Actually, all they need to do is go to Kay's dentist and they can get it taken care of in a couple of hours.

I completely agree with you about the Ana story. I think Karen wants Tyra out of the picture. If she adopts Ana and takes her place (Momma Karen?), then Tyra is toast.

Can't stand the new Abby. What happened to that sweet little girl? I can't imagine the child of level-headed Ashley acting like such a brat. And she is letting Victor shut Brad out, she should have made them wait for the teacher conference, and not allowed Abby to keep that horse. He says it's an investment, but unless he's planning to race it or breed with it, that's a cop out.

Loved seeing Billy and Chloe squirm. Amazing that no one has put two and two together yet. At least Lily is sniffing around. Cane is perpetually clueless, he wouldn't figure it out if the truth was spelled out on the morning news.

I also love the kids back together and trying to get things done. Their shenanigans should be fun to watch!

And, like you, I am sick of Gloria. She's been written into a corner and she can't stop. I think River should come back to town, break her out of jail and run off with her. At least it would be different!

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to vent!

well this is the weekend. cant wait for next week this is getting good for a while i was what are the writers saying "bad is good" so nice to see that bad dont last always,oh! how about ms.c. and murphy i love it i hope when she comes around that she dont dismiss murphy from her life it would be so nice and different in g.c. i think the writers could do something with them let the older genaration have some hope in there lives as well as the younger ones how about that, oh! esther too i hate that rodger turned out to be a crook to bad that would have given a real place for esther, oh! what about that phyllis i really think she might have a nervouse breakdown i hope shes the real phyllis remember sheila uh-uh-i wonder how about you soap opera fans?
