Restless Rant
Week of October 19 - 23:

The writers continued the trend of more balanced storytelling this week on The Young and the Restless, but I still find the show has an air of negativity about it - everyone's irritable and argumentative! Ashley tears a strip off Victor, Victor reams out a variety of people, JT and Victoria have heated exchanges, Katherine dumps on Jack - the list goes on. Even the christening lacked joy given the tense relationships of all those involved. There was some romance though, and a couple of laughs, although not nearly as many as I'd like. Let's break it up:

Kevin/Ryder Situation: You'd think after all of this time, the last thing Kevin would be anymore is gullible, yet there he was, asking Jana to let trouble camp out on their sofa! The Fisher/Baldwins could probably use a break from falling into disastrous circumstances, but alas, it's not to be. The high points of this developing storyline are: Lauren getting a story, Wilson Bethel (who's doing a great job as Ryder), the intrigue of who Ryder's mastermind mommy might be, and of course, Deacon. While I'm tired of the "Kevin and the gang in hot water" theme, I'm willing to give this a chance.

Daniel/Amber: I loved their latest romantic reunion, but they need to chill for a while now. No more flip-flopping for Daniel, no more misunderstandings or break-ups for the time being, or it's going to get annoying.

Victor: He seems to be getting back to his old self this week, brazenly kicking people out of his hospital room, laying the blame at other's feet, and speaking abruptly where only a week ago he was whispering. There was one Victor scene that particularly struck me this week. At the christening, when Jack leaned over Victor's shoulder and told Baby Faith that she is an Abbott too, and he'll never let anyone forget it. First, I laughed at Victor's expression, then immediately thought how their rich history will be missed with the departure of Victor, and then I was slightly repulsed by the old rivalry rearing it's head so soon after Colleen's death. Speaking of Victor and Jack, it seems like both are getting some karmic payback this week - Victor stripped of his Ranch, and Jack failing in his attempt to keep Jabot in the family.

Jill and Jabot: I LOVE this! There is nothing better than the age-old rivalry between former lovers Jill and Jack. Their scenes are electric - can't wait for the zingers and one-liners! It will be totally entertaining to see them trying to run Jabot together - go Katherine!

Victoria and JT: Count me on Team JT! Victoria is exactly like Victor - expects to have everything exactly the way she wants it - always has. I wish she were the one leaving to take a job out of town, though…

Billy: I find it infinitely interesting that Jack doesn't see what a 'mini-me' Billy is - Jack was just like him when he was younger - and now Jack's doling out advice and shaking his head at Billy's antics - too funny. Billy is immature, impulsive and a hothead, but I look forward to exciting things happening over at Restless Style now!

Mackenzie: What's with her giving advice to the men in town? She's had pow-wows with Chance, Cane, and JT this week! I give them credit just for staying awake long enough to hear what she has to say - such a dreary character.

Soaps.com
Adam/Sharon: I find it really strange and weird that Adam has this need to be around Sharon after what he did to her - and not to come clean or set things right for her - but to gain her acceptance and understanding for his other transgressions! He's such a creeper. Ugh.

Nikki: Although I feel it's natural for her to be at Victor's side right now, at the same time, I can't help but hope she draws the line at becoming romantically involved with him again. He's treated her like absolute dog dung over things he knows darn well were his fault, not hers (David Chow), and even told her he wished she were in the morgue with a toe tag! Sure she has an undeniable attraction to him, and even relishes doing battle over him with Ashley, but to go back to him would be the equivalent of wearing a 'kick me' sign on her back.

Phyllis/Nick: You know it's a strange week when Phyllis is undeniably one of the most content, pleasant, and levelheaded characters on the canvas! I like the Phyllis that slapped Deacon way better! Anyway, the scenes with Nick and Phyllis selling the magazine, while undeniably dull, were at least very realistic. I also like how they discussed not being over what Victor did to Summer - not something to sweep under the rug!

Traci: It's been a treat to have Traci in Genoa City again - she rocks! Wish she was staying!

Lily/Devon/Cane/Roxy: I can't believe gorgeous, kind Roxy would go there again after Tyra, and I can't believe Devon just stood there and talked about him and Neil being 'cool', and Tyra and Ana doing well - as though he didn't sleep with someone who he grew up believing was his aunt! As for Lily, I don't really understand her trepidation about trusting Cane at this point - it's kind of a non-issue when you've just renewed your vows and the man has spent the past months being a completely devoted slave to love (sans the nookie)! I'm glad they had their dance - now - where do they go from here? And where did Neil disappear to again?

Chance/Chloe:
Bravo Chance! There's nothing more intriguing than a man who refuses to let you mistreat him, and who tells it like it is! Dumping Chloe was probably the single best move he could have made - he'll have her hook, line, and sinker now - and the beauty of it is - that's not why he did it! Great romantic drama - loved it. Bring me more…

Patty/Emily Peterson: I'm pleased that they've devised a way to explain more of Patty's background story, and to keep this talented actress on the canvas longer. Emily's quite a spitfire! Kudos.

There was plenty to like this week, and there's lots to look forward to as well. Yes, there's still an aura of negativity hanging over the show, but I feel that some of that may have to do with the recent news about Eric Braeden leaving, as well as the lingering after-effects of Adam's reign of slime. Here's hoping that things only get better - November sweeps aren't too far off!

Dear Candace,

Can you honestly answer whether the writers/producers ever read our posts? And whether our opinions do make a difference?

If you can convey the message; we are all very broken-hearted over this whole baby story line debacle. Majority of the viewers are women who are actually intelligent and some how -the Writers/Producers have reduced us to tears and heart break -over this rather horrific drama. We are a 'humiliated audience.' Most of us are not watching - it's must more pleasant to come online and read everyone's comments.

Just my thoughts.

Thank you.

Great Rant Candace,
To me it feels like the writers are trying to end the show...Keeping Adam when everyone hates him....Letting Eric Braeden go, killing off Colleen and Brad within months of each other, taking Sharon's baby... Its like they are Sabotaging the show on purpose. I don't get it. If they are trying to make people stop watching so they can cancel it then they should just put everyone out of their misery and just do it. Without the great Victor Newman is there really and reason to watch. They need to get it figured out or just end it because this is getting ridiculous.

Also I love reading the spoilers to see if there is a reason I should watch the show and to tell you the truth November Sweeps looks about as interesting as watching paint dry. I am starting to think Y&R is just not worth watching anymore and it was the only soap I bothered with.

Great rant. I agree with most.

sharkaz and Akiki, applause! Right on!

Writers....GIVE SHARON BACK HER BABY. Please don't wait till she's (the baby) 16 years old!

And Adam MUST be found out. Soon!

ITA with all the comments above. This once awesome show has been reduced to crap! That's the way I feel and I think alot of people do. They have pretty much destroyed Sharon, who is my absolute fav. character on the show, and, of course, without Vic and Nic, Y&R will just never be the same! I am much, much more satisified watching DAYS now! It seems to be getting better and better, while Y&R is really suffering! Candace, Do you think TPTB even have a clue at all to what's going on??? I do not watch Y&R anymore, just keep up with it through this site. That was the way I USED to keep up with DAYS, but it's so good lately, I'm glued to the set when it's on!!! I really, really want to feel that way about Y&R again, but this show has continually gotten worse!!!

I wish I could feel your positive outlook on things Candace but I dont. I just really dont care what happens anymore. I dont recognize any of my favorite characters anymore and it seems to me that they are trying to sabotage this soap on purpose. If EB was leaving on his own that would be a different matter but they way its been told that they treated him is deplorable. The fact that Adam is still lurking around and hasnt been caught yet is beyond intelligence and it just makes for really "cheesy" soap opera crap. I enjoy reading the posts more than watching. And I enjoy my Dog Whisperer instead of Y&R now.

It's time for Adam to get caught and Sharon get her baby back.

Why give the writers a chance, Candace?
Can't you see the writing is on the wall for this Soap Opera?
It might as well only have Tidy Bowl commercials because it has gone down the toilet!

Hi Candace, I have gone from being a decades long daily viewer of this show, to being a once a week reader of this website. I will not watch this show ever again unless Sharon and Nick get their baby back (while she is still a baby), and Adam pays for what he's done to everyone.

I know you were repulsed about Jack telling the baby she was an Abbott, and I agree with you, but I would also like to add that I was repulsed BECAUSE SHE'S NOT, and every day that goes on, Ashley, Abby, Jack and the rest of the Abbotts get more and more attached to her. And Sharon, Nick, Noah and the rest of the Newmans miss knowing, loving and raising her.

This storyline is sick, and more importantly demeaning and disrespectful to the intelligence of the fans of this show. I can't comment on anything else you wrote, because I didn't watch. I hope the writers read what we say, as I am pretty sure I am not the only person who feels this way. I'm sorry to be such a downer, I know none of this is your fault.

Great Rant Candace, sad to see Traci go she is an amazing actress, i just dont like the fact that her time being back was full of tears, I hate that the TPTB have cause so much, mess with Y&R we are not some stupid audience and we know what we want and like, and no not everyone is going to be happy but this has been ridiculous, how many times are every couple going to do the same dances over and over, they know Adam is a worthless character and yet they are keeping him on, what is his purpose for revenge and i like the bad guys but he is really slime, and is Ashley going to go crazy again if she ever finds out Faith is not hers and im sorry jack but Faith is not an Abbott, i got an great idea if they want to redeem Adam kill him off, thats the only way i see it.

Now as a huge Lauren/Likey Fan im happy they are getting a story but at what cost, a breakup or death, especially with these writers Track record, im hoping not and i hope Lauren get something Juicy, tracey Bregman is a great actress too and has been on Y&R for many years and i would loved to see Kevin having egg on his face if something happens to Lauren or Michael especially since he allowed someone into their family that has lied to him and choose ryder over michael after everything Likey has done for him he needs to grow up and the guilt he will feel once he finds out the truth and that would be great conflict with Michael and Kevin, so really hoping something good for Lauren, I want her to stand out in this one everyone has had their time but her, just tired of seeing her prop other characters.( side note happy to see a Fen finally after 10 month) But will not hold my breathe on this either!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!!!
