Restless Rant
Week of June 22 -25:

Well, for this week's episodes of The Twilight Zone, er, The Young and the Restless, there's not a whole lot to say that I didn't already cover last week. Some storylines rock, and some are duds. We'll take a walk through them, and I'll try not to repeat myself…

Colleen and the Board of Directors:
Oops, my bad, this story just disappeared into thin air - as did Colleen. But a little bird told me she's on her way back - more on that when I publish my most recent interview.

The Winter's Family: Whoops! They're also missing in action, but if it means that I never have to see Devon lust after his aunt again, well, then just bring back Neil - thanks. Of course, Lily is still around, but she's behaving strangely too - she's taken to dressing up in disco-era hooker ensembles - perhaps to entice Cane into baby making?! Hmm…

The Cane Conundrum: Well, we were treated to lots of powerhouse scenes with Nina/Jill/Katherine on Monday, but no one in this storyline has been seen since. The empty casket, viles of blood, intriguing looks on Katherine's face, and the disappearance of 'Langley' were all great touches - and explain some things - but certainly not all. Methinks Cane can't reach his 'uncle' because he is on his way to GC - at least I hope so!! Bringing Tricia Cast back has been the best move this soap has made since they hired Billy Miller - jackpot!

Missing Murphy: I would love to see Murphy caught up in the middle of all the current Phillip-centered drama at the Chancellor Estate. Murphy is an excellent character that really enhances every scene he is in - where is he?

Addam's Family: Headed from bad to unbearable. Ashley finally gets some of her old fire back, but sadly none of her brains. Victor, for all intents and purposes, appears to be on a healthy dose of Prozac. Vacant Abby, we're supposed to believe, suddenly has better intuition than her mega-experienced mother, and to top it all off, Nikki Newman now appears to be the smartest of them all?! The Victor I knew would never have been fooled like this! To buy Adam's story that jailbirds stabbed his corneas with needles?! C'mon!! Don’t even get me started on the idea that Rafe would believe Adam suddenly has feelings for him, especially considering the timing! As they're saying in the message boards, when it comes to Rafe, here's hoping he's playin' the player! Oh, and in spite of Adam's little tete-a-tete with his mother's photo - I still don't understand why he's done all of this! Note: I'm liking Estella and Rafe's beefed-up roles - great job!

Adam Actor Switch: Chris Engen did a fantastic job in this role, especially playing the cocky, snarky beats of the character - he will be missed. Michael Muhney got a call, showed up, was handed a script with a front-burner amount of dialogue, and jumped right in - it showed slightly in his very first scene or two, but I am already comfortable with him in the role - he's got the chops to play this character - and he's done just as well as I had hoped he would do. He'll bring different things to the role, but I expected that, and am wholly open to it. Welcome Michael, best wishes Chris…

Phyllis/Nick/Sharon/Jack: To borrow yet another expression from the message boards - this is a hot mess! Great acting by Michelle Stafford when Phyllis found Summer unconscious and called Nick, but story-wise, this is a not-so-merry-go-round that I want to get off! The storyline feels interminable and repetitive. Fans on all sides of the Shick/Phick/Shack/Phack debate feel jerked around, and Jack as a doormat is just so unappealing to me! Heck, even Mary Jane is less fun now that she has attempted murder on a little girl! Get a clue!

Soaps.com
Noah/Eden: I know, I know, he's a spoiled brat, needs a spanking, yada, yada… But I just love watching Kevin Schmidt portray this teen - he is Noah! Such a talented young actor. I also enjoy watching Eden take on that snobby Abby - both girls do a good job in their roles too!

Daniel and the Gang: Another stinker, but wait - there is faint hope that this story might become much more interesting. I'll be blunt - if that's Amber's ex, Deacon Sharpe, throwing whiskey glasses and framing Daniel - I'll be doing the happy dance, and will get on board with this tale in a very big way - heck, I'll even join the Chipmunk Club! If the troublemaker is anyone else - the disappointment and letdown will actually be painful, and the story will continue to tank - 'cause no one will care! 'Michael as family defender' has been done to death, and so has 'fab four get in a fix'.

Victoria/JT: Vikki's still whining about daddy. Thank God Victor gave her the art foundation to shut her up for a while! JT is no fun either as this loyal lapdog - I was looking forward to him having some conflict with Victor, or discovering he still had feelings for Colleen - he needs a shake-up!

Heather:
Quite possibly the stupidest Assistant D.A. ever depicted on television - is she ever right?! This character has become so astoundingly one-note, that no one can understand her, or relate to what she's doing whatsoever! She throws everyone that gets charged with anything completely under the bus - even if they're her friend or lover, and she inexplicably continues to date a convicted criminal! It's disappointing that they would bring on the daughter of such an established character as Paul Williams and then not put the appropriate effort into her character development.

Billy/Mac/Chloe: Please make these forced scenes between Billy and Mac stop - what did we ever do to deserve this?! Mind-numbing is one term that comes to mind. I actually physically perked up, and even felt a grateful tear form in my eye (kidding), during Friday's show when Chloe finally knocked on the door of that room at the Club and broke the monotony. Thankfully, she dropped the bomb about Sharon's pregnancy, which should serve to keep Mac away for a bit, but on the other hand it might set off a series of Mac sulking scenes…argh!

So, this was definitely a rant week! In all honesty, I always enjoy the acting, and many of the smaller beats played within the larger storylines - which makes the show remain very watchable - but overall, I feel somehow unsatisfied. The writers continue to pull surprises out of their hats, though, which I like - and which gives me hope. Y&R has all of the ingredients, including fantastic actors, and a richly mined history, to be amazing. But I can't say enough about balance - you need some real happy moments, happy couples (not ones that we all know will only last five minutes, and not ones with no chemistry), and comedy relief - it's not a mystery hour - it's a soap opera. Going too heavily on the negative throws everything out of whack.

I have to agree with the entire restless rant. I am so disapointed in the story lines I am thinking of moving on with this soap.
Is law inforcement and the FBI in Genoa City all idiots? They have not yet gotten the right person except for Adam and Jack still walks around with no consequence for his role in the diary.
The gass-lighting of Ashley is ENOUGH already. Doesn't anyone ever clean that house? They can't find the camera's Adam hid in the living room right under the side table and Victor and Ashley's bedroom? With all the security at the ranch there is NO evidence of Adam climbing in and out of the window? Really now.
I did see a "spoiler alert" say that Sharon tells Nick it's Jack's baby so he can be with Summer... if that in fact is true I will surely stop watching this soap!
The rest is getting to be a bore, how many more people are going to come back from the dead? Now Phillip?
Mac... I just yawn and fast foward my TEVO.
This is the first time I ever posted so sorry for all the negative comments.

Thanks, Candace for your great rant. I aways wait to read your take on the show.

RE: Heather. Sorry, Candace, but I don't call Heather's sleeping with Adam a DATE! It could be called a Booty Call because all those two ever do is have SEX. A date usually means going out to dinner, maybe a movie, then the sex. They never have a meal in his room (prison as he calls it) or anything to drink.

Too many dark sides are existent in this show now.

I am totally disgusted with the directions the core characters are being portrayed. You have stated all of that in your rant.

Are the WRITERS reading the comments or not? They SHOULD! They should know how disappointed the fans are at this point. The number of pages of comments have dwindled to almost a DRIP! Fans who have been loyal viewers and posters have stopped commenting. May have decided to stop watching the show because of the writing.

Why can't the writers bring back some of the original characters who are still among the living? Bring back ROMANCE, not just SEX. Intrigue and mystery would be great instead of making the characters we love/hate brought down in such demeaning story lines.

I have not seen such terrible story lines since LML fired the character, Malcom who would jump at the chance to return to Y&R. It seems like the show is going down the sewer so fast that it makes my head spin. I have been an faithful viewer since its inception and am about to jump ship at this point.

Sorry if I sound so critical, but that is exactly how the majority of us feel.

BTW, have a great weekend!
Thank you again.
Carol

amen, amen, amen to the rant and the comments!

Only one thing, I'm kinda liking Billy & Mac back together, although, I do think Mac is a bit boring.

And Victor being so easily persuaded that Adam had his eyeballs injected in jail.....ridiculous!

Find someone new for Chloe. She's turned in to a likeable character.

Now, we saw Sharon open the envelope and it's Nick's baby. DO NOT mess with this. These two have had enough and need to be happy for a while. Please!

Good afternoon Candace and a great rant this week I might add.
I think that I am on board as a lot of other viewers are in that I think this show is becoming incredibly hard to watch anymore because all of the main characters have been changed to portray someone they are not. The only storyline that has my interest at this point is the Cane, PhillipIII storyline, and this week we only had one episode of that. I am to the point that I FF through any of the scenes that involve Amber, Daniel, Jana and Kevin. I thought that when MG-Daniel resigned to another year to get involved with the FBI storyline would be something completely different than what we are seeing. I am truly disappointed.
Phick/Phack/Shick/Shack- It does not matter to me who ends up with who at this point. The writers continue to change these 4 around all the time and at this point it is becoming increasingly hard to watch and get invested with.
I know the show is in between sweeps right now, but I think the show is going downhill and the ratings have shown that in recent weeks.
Adddam's Family is another storyline that I now yawn when I see it. I miss the real Victor Newman -his ruthlessness, his business expertise, his power. The only other time I have seen Victor being portrayed as this pathetic was after Sabrina died and he went into a "depression". The writers must not care too much what we the viewers think or feel at this stage of the game, because they continue with this awful writing.
I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that in the weeks to come, things will turn around and we will all be watching the vintage Y&R that we so love and remember.
I hope that next week when you post your rant, things will be a little more on the positive side.
Have a great weekend Candace and thank-you.
Julie

Candace- this was a perfect way to sum up this week! Your rant was right on. I truly do agree with you about the younger characters. Even though we may not agree with how their character is acting, I feel that the people portraying these characters are doing a fantastic job!

I agree with Candace 100% on these story lines, these writers had better get their act together, and listen to the fans, because we are trying to tell you we donot like the way these story lines are going. I think the scenes' between Mac and Billy are not friendly enough, they need to be friends and lovers, they need some more closeness, with each other, be a little looser, and flirt with each other, after all they are in love, and they do act like they are in love. I still want to see the two of them together. Can't stand Chloe, the writers need to find her someone else to stalk. And the Ashley and Victor story line is just crazy to think a man as smart as he is would let something like this go on and on with out thinking well let me start looking at this a little closer, it is getting to be a bit much to take in. And Ashley is also a smart woman, and she is acting so dumb, it is more than I can take, it is like the twilight zone. Thank you

I have been watching this show since day one. I can honestly say this show has really gone off the deep end. I can't hardly stand to watch it anymore. I am so sick and tired of the sharon, nick, phyllis jack mess. When you think it is finally going in the right directions, Sharon does exactly what Nick did with Summer paternity test, and lies. One day they are promising to Noah they are putting the family back together and the next day she is telling a lie. Victor Ashley Adam is disgusting. How can someone carry a dead baby in their stomach for this long. Leave chloe and billy alone, Mac is so boring. Whoever is writing now..LET THEM GO...Bring back the old writers. Stop the madness...its not working

Since Ed Scott left Y&R and went to DOOL, its ratings have gone UP! Hiring Hogan Sheffer who almost destroyed DOOL was a HUGE MISTAKE! He will destroy this show if all this GARBAGE continues. I say RE-HIRE Ed Scott to bring back the vintage Y&R of days gone by.

Posted by girlpoetus at Friday, June 26 2009 12:57 PM

Well done Candace. I agree with you 100% on just about everything. Y&R was the only soap I watched because it used to have the best storylines and wasnt so campy like the other soaps out there, Im afraid that has changed. I find it very sad that as the moderator you have more of a pulse of what the audience wants than the writers themselves. They will lose their loyal fan base.

Candace, truer words have never been said! I hope the TpTb read this rant. Didn't they learn anything from the last series of dark storylines.
