CARMEN MESTA/INES VARGAS'S HISTORY
Flown into Genoa City in September of 2006, Carmen Mesta used her outstanding PR skills to help bring Jabot out of the public eye after its mess with the contaminated cream. During her time at Jabot, she had a brief affair with Jack Abbott, then later went on to take a job at Newman Enterprises.
Carmen quickly found that she enjoyed the company of Neil Winters and found herself drawn to him during a time when he and wife Drucilla were on the outs. Carmen's candor attitude had been a great relief to Neil leading him to start having feelings for her. After encouraging Neil to follow his dreams and open a jazz club, Carmen and Neil went back to her apartment and found themselves in a passionate kiss. Little did they know that Drucilla had seen the whole thing!
Carmen would soon become the sight of Dru's anger. After a series of events, starting with Dru breaking into her apartment and cutting up all of her clothes, Carmen rushed to the police station to press charges. She was again tackled by Dru's fury after Dru attacked her at Newman! In fear for her life, Carmen had a restraining order placed on Dru, which in turn placed a threat on the entire Winters family. After Carmen refused to drop the charges, Neil went to his wife's side and found his feelings toward Carmen to be contempt.
After having the advantage of overhearing a few of Genoa City's deepest secrets, Carmen found herself being bribed to leave town by Jack Abbott and Mr. Kim, stalked by Devon Hamilton with pleas to let his mother off the hook, and assessed by Brad Carlton as to how much of his past Carmen really knew…
On October 30, 2006, Carmen was found murdered behind Neil's Club Indigo, leaving the District Attorney and everyone in Genoa City with a case of whodunit! The list of suspects continues to run deep with Carmen's presence haunting many from the grave! However, seeing as her private life was a mystery to most, could it be that a lover from her past, David Chow, is the only one who can shed a little light on this case and set the murder of Carmen Mesta to rest? Or will it turn out that one of GC's own is still walking around a killer…
In March of 2007, Carmen's look-alike cousin, Ines, showed up in town with Carmen's face and a desire to stalk Dru Winters!

Friday, October 12 2007: Nick, Jack, Michael, Victor and Nikki pull together for Phyllis..
While at the Club, David and Nikki discuss Clear Springs. She is still worried about the condos selling, David mentions his ex-wife would be interested, but they haven’t spoken since their divorce. She wonders if it will be that way between her and Victor. David suggests a day to relax with him, Nikki agrees.
Nikki questions David about his ex-wife. He shares he started seeing Carmen soon after they filed for divorce. He relays his marriage wasn’t working, they had disconnected despite the fact they worked for the same company. His marriage was over before he met Carmen.
Later, in Jail, Jana tells Phyllis she’s sorry about the appeal not going through. She also tells Phyllis about Kevin’s website he made for her. Jana has printed copies of news items on her and offers them to her. Phyllis tells her to get rid of them or burn them, whatever. The guard announces David Chow is Jana’s visitor, who admits to Phyllis she called him to come.
David meets with Jana. He admits to her he wanted to marry Carmen. He wonders why she asked to meet him. She mentions it’s the anniversary of Carmen’s death in a few weeks. She wants to contact Carmen’s family and wants to say how sorry she is. He never understood, why Carmen, what did she ever do to her. She explains it started when she stole something from Victoria and Carmen found her with it, she continues that her illness/tumor took complete control over her. A tearful David explains how he felt when he heard the news. Jana begs and asks what she can do for him, for Carmen’s family, she wants to atone for everything she’s done and spend her life helping people.
In Jail, Phyllis asks Jana about meeting David Chow. She admits he told her everything about Carmen. He wanted her to understand how much she affected her friends and her family. She gets it now, but back then didn’t feel anything. Her emotions were all shut down. She admits she even tried to kill the man that she loved. Phyllis interjects that she was sick. She admits it doesn’t change what she did.
Thursday, October 11 2007: Phyllis awaits news of her appeal…
In Jail, Kevin visits Jana and lets her know he is working on a website that will share her condition and the case with everyone so they can sign a petition. He continues with telling her that he will have medical experts review her case, who can testify at her hearing. She explains she isn’t innocent. He lets her know she is, she had a tumor and had no control over what she was doing. She brings up Carmen and her parents in association with what she has done and puts herself in their place. It haunts her. Kevin consoles her by telling her they will win in court.
