In 1991, Neil Winters was freshly out of Stanford and working as an executive trainee at Newman Enterprises. Although he first fell for Drucilla's sister Olivia, in the end, it was Dru who won Neil's heart. After the two married, Neil's estranged brother Malcolm came to Genoa City.
While Neil was out of town on business, Dru had been sick and medicated in bed when Malcolm stopped by for a visit. Thinking he was Neil, Malcolm didn't object to Dru's advances and they made love! This secret stayed buried for many years to come.
Neil and Dru soon found themselves to be the parents of a little girl, Lily. However, shortly after, Neil was forced to become a 'long distance' dad when Dru signed a modeling contact and took Lily to Paris! When Neil couldn't accept or support Dru's career path, she filed for divorce with no intentions of coming back to GC.
Although unintentional, Neil fell in love with Malcolm's fiancee Alex Perez. Neil didn't want to hurt his brother, but after losing his best friend Ryan McNeil, Neil got drunk and blurted out to Malcolm that he was in love with Alex! Malcolm was furious and hated being around Neil. However, since they all worked together, Alex and Malcolm were sent to Kenya with Neil and Victoria Newman overseeing things. During their trip, Malcolm overheard Alex tell Neil that she hadn't been honest about her feelings, but Malcolm didn't hang around to hear Alex tell Neil that she was in love with Malcolm. After Alex left, Malcolm tracked Neil down and clocked him in the mouth! Later that day, Neil was stunned to hear that a bridge had collapsed and Malcolm's car had plummeted into a river below.
After Malcolm was presumed dead, Neil returned to GC, quit his job at Newman, and hit the bottle hard, becoming a full-blown alcoholic. In 2002, Dru and Lily came back from Paris in an attempt to help Neil get back on his feet. Although it took time, Neil started to realize that he wanted his family back. Shortly after Dru and Lily moved back into the apartment, it was only a matter of time before he and Dru reconciled.
With his life back on track, Neil was rehired at Newman and Dru went on to work for Jabot. For a while, Neil and Dru were swamped with work, leaving Lily with a lot of time to get into trouble. Although Lily ran into the arms of Kevin Fisher, who ended up using her, Neil and Dru were able to work together and save their daughter from losing more than her virginity.
2005 would be the start of many ups and downs in Neil's life. When Lily and Dru came to Neil wanting to help out troubled teen Devon Hamilton, he wanted no part of it. However, Neil finally gave in and took Devon into their home on a temporary foster basis. During this time, Neil was shocked when Malcolm showed up in GC after thought to be dead! Malcolm was still resentful of Neil, but later came to Neil's side after a car accident almost took his life, and the two finally made a mends.
Just when Neil thought he had it all, a loving wife, two great kids (Lily and his new foster son Devon), a second chance with the brother he thought he had lost, and a great job to support them all, Neil's world plummeted when he found out that Lily wasn't his daughter but rather his brother Malcolm's! With the deception to much to bear, Neil's marriage quickly began falling apart, but his relationship with Lily never faltered - even though she ran off and married Daniel Romalotti!
Neil began throwing himself into his work and soon found that he enjoyed spending time with Newman's PR rep Carmen Mesta. Although Dru was still hounding him with apologies, Carmen made Neil forgot about the past and prompted him to look to the future - even encouraged him to follow his dreams and open a jazz club, which he did months later: Club Indigo.
However, after Dru started harassing Carmen and fighting for their marriage, Neil saw a different side to Carmen and thought better of pursuing their relationship. He went back to Dru, blaming himself for her legal troubles where Carmen was concerned, and decided to make his marriage work. It wouldn't be long before Neil found Carmen dead behind his Club with people looking to him as a suspect!
To make matters worse, Neil's foster son Devon came down with meningitis and as a result became deaf. Although the Winters pulled through the Mesta murder (they were cleared), an even bigger disaster faced Neil when Drucilla went over a cliff and was presumed dead. The widower has moved on, with the help of Lily and Devon, and is now living with Karen Taylor. He recently had a promotion at work as well - Victor asked Neil to take over as CEO of Newman Enterprises after Sabrina died, and Adam messed up the opportunity. Neil eagerly agreed, and hired back Victoria right away! Neil's latest challenge has come in the form of Devon's relatives Tyra and Ana showing up on the doorstep! Tyra is Devon's aunt, who is raising Devon's sister as her own. When they temporarily bunked with Neil, sparks flew between Tyra and Neil, causing some jealousy where Karen is concerned!

At Neil's place, he and Karen are about to share their news with Devon and Roxanne, when Tyra and Ana come in. When Karen announces to all that she and Neil are engaged to be married, Tyra looks disappointed. Tyra congratulates them, however, and Lily speaks up and says she needs to get going. Devon spills that she has a date with a guy she met online. They all warn her to be careful, and she says that she has arranged to meet him at a very public bookstore!
Tyra and Neil are working at Indigo. She tells him that she really is happy for him and Karen, then gazes at him with adoration as he goes over the books. They finish up and head back to Neil's place. Tyra sits down to talk to Karen, thanking her for watching Ana. Karen asks about the police officer, but Tyra says she doesn't know where that's going. Tyra and Ana leave, and Neil and Karen begin getting passionate on the couch!
Jill thanks Gina for arranging the reception at the GCAC. Esther, Danny, Liz and Brock all discuss how much Katherine would have liked the service. Billy, Cane, Chloe, Amber and Daniel join in the conversation too. They joke about how wild she could be at times and share a laugh. Neil, Karen, and Lily arrive and pay their respects. Jill thanks them for coming. Billy asks Brock why he called her 'the Duchess', and Brock explains that that's the way he always saw her. Liz agrees that she had a regal bearing. Neil takes Lily aside and asks if she's okay - she's been very quiet. Lily notes that it's just a sad day. Neil is joined by Karen and they tell Lily that they're engaged. She congratulates them happily. Nearby, Brock introduces Cane to Nina. Cane tells her that he's the 'other' son - Jill will always consider Philip her son as well. He says he'd like to meet her son sometime, and she says he'd love that too. They agree to meet to chat later.
