Past: Founder and Former Chairman of the Board of Jabot Cosmetics

In 1980, John Abbott was forced to raise his three young children alone after his wife Dina decided that there was more to life than being a wife and mother and left Genoa City. The founder of Jabot Cosmetics, John provided well for his family and was always there to offer up his love and support.
After falling for the much younger Jill Foster, John and Jill went on to marry against his son Jack's objections. During a series of health problems, John ended up suffering from a stroke after finding out that Jill had slept with Jack! John soon filed for divorce. When Jill found out that she was pregnant, but never knew who the father was due to a miscarriage, wanting to keep the family disgrace secret, John awarded Jill a hefty divorce settlement: One-fourth of Jabot, a seat on the board, and an executive job with a salary of $150,000 a year! Through all the drama, Jill ended up being an asset to the company.
Although John's business flourished all the way to the top, Jack's hatred for Victor Newman had placed Jabot out of the hands of the Abbott's and straight into Victor's pocket a time or two! However, John and Victor maintained a mutual respect and the company's best interests were always taken into account.
Not having the best of luck with relationships, John allowed Jill back into his heart and the two remarried and had a son, Billy. Although John wasn't keen on the idea of having another child at his age, he was granted custody of Billy after catching Jill engaged in an affair with Jed Sanders! John and Billy moved to New York to live with Traci.
Years later, John and sixteen year old Billy returned to Genoa City so John could run Jabot and try to make another climb to the top of the cosmetic world. However, after Victor Newman used his money and power to buy the Newman cosmetic line to the front of the shelves, Jabot was facing bankruptcy. In an attempt to show his regrets, Victor offered Jack seventy-five million to settle out of court. Without asking John, Jack turned Victor down, and, in the end, John only received a twenty million dollar settlement for Newman's part in Jabot's demise, with the stipulation that Jack resigned forever. Although it broke John's heart that Jack could no longer work by his side, John needed to do whatever he had to to keep his legacy alive.
Against his family's approval, John went on to marry Gloria Fisher. What John didn't know was that Gloria's divorce from her second husband, Tom Fisher, had never been finalized. Although John was angry that Gloria allowed Tom to blackmail her, he eventually forgave her and married her for real. Tom Fisher continued to harass John's family and even insinuated himself into Ashley's life. Finally having had enough, after John overheard Tom demanding for Gloria to meet with him, he grabbed his gun and took off to face Tom himself!
Later that night, John got in a car accident and ended up in the hospital with no memory of his scuffle with Tom. Tom was found dead and Ashley confessed to his murder to protect her father. Soon, John regained his memory, remembered that the gun had gone off during a struggle with Tom, and came forward with his confession. Although he had only been trying to protect his family, John was sentenced to seven years in prison.
During his time in prison, John tried to remain strong. However, his health soon deteriorated and, in the end, John suffered from a major stroke, and was put on life support. The sad thing was, John had only been a few weeks away from receiving a pardon from the Governor and sent back home to be with his family. After the doctors told John's family that there was no way he'd ever come out of the coma, Jack finally convinced Gloria that John wouldn't want to be kept alive by machines. With his whole family surrounding him, John Abbott, one of Genoa City's strongest, kindest, most loving men around, died in peace. However, John's memory continues to live on through those he loved, in fact, he often appears to son, Jack, as a ghost!

In the street outside the bar, Billy holds up his snowglobe and shakes it. He tries to walk, but twists his ankle and laughs. He tosses the snowglobe up in the air and it smashes. He speaks aloud, telling Delia that Daddy is going to fix it. John Abbott, Billy's father appears, and tells him not to bother. He then says he's his date for New Year's!
Billy and John are at Restless Style. Billy says he knows what this is all about, so he'll cut to the chase and promise to be a good boy. John scoffs that he thinks he knows everything - they're going to look at the future. Billy muses that they're starting at Restless Style. John accuses him of having no journalistic integrity - his vision was to peddle garbage.
John and Billy are in Lily's house - she is cleaning up from a party with children running around. John remarks that she has been cancer-free for six years. Cane appears, followed by Mac, who is wearing a wedding ring. She has a child as well, and John tells Billy she's not his wife, and it's not his child. Billy watches Lily and Cane discuss how Mac gave them their child. Billy asks John to take him to see his kid.
Billy and his father arrive in the Chancellor living room, where Delia is dressed up and the whole family is with her. Billy asks where he is, and John explains that he alienated himself from the family by exploiting them in Restless Style. John also points out that Chance is good with Delia. Billy scoffs that he can be happy for Mac, and proud of his daughter. John reiterates what Mac said about him in the bar - he's half drunk on scotch, and half drunk on attention.
Next stop for Billy is the Abbott Mansion, thirteen years in the future. Ashley, Traci, and Jack are sharing a toast. They discuss Ashley's daughter going into high school, and Abby being a power executive. Billy listens and realizes that Jack got Jabot back, and Ashley's there with him, but they didn't ask Billy back. Jack tells his sisters that Billy left Jabot, and that it's like he died the day he bought Restless Style. Billy snarks that John should take Jack for a trip next - how long can a guy hold a grudge?
As Billy goes on about his success, John takes him to Restless Style. A copy of the latest issue is in his hands. Billy exclaims, "Fisher at my magazine? No!" Kevin Fisher is inside with the Newmans, congratulating them on regaining control of the magazine. Nick tells Kevin that he was the one who turned it around. John tells Billy that this will happen in about five years. Mac comes in, dressed to the nines, and greets Kevin. Billy learns that Kevin is her husband - and they're madly in love. Billy walks over the window and screams!
John next takes Billy to Crimson Lights, where Cane meets with Katherine and Jill. Billy listens as Jill calls Cane her son, and tells him she wants him to takeover Chancellor Enterprises. Billy hisses that he's her son, but they can't hear him. Cane accepts the offer, and then Kay mentions that Cordelia is walking down the aisle. Billy turns to John and says "My Cordelia? Let's go!"
Billy sees Chloe sitting in at the dining room table in the Chancellor Estate looking at the baby picture of Delia and him. She talks to the photo, telling Billy that the reason she told Cane he was the father was because she knew she couldn't count on him. She muses that he seemed to love Delia for a while, but here it is the most important day of her life and she's aching because he's not there. Billy begs Chloe to tell Delia he loves her, but she can't hear him. John tells Billy he's nothing but a bad memory to her.
John and Billy are once again out in front of the bar. Billy yells harshly at John that he made money - he did what he wanted him to do! John corrects him - Jabot was not about money, it was about family. Billy asks if this is where he promises to be good, but John tells him it's too late. Billy asks what he knows anyway - he's dead! John says he might be, but Billy is too. A car crashes into a light pole and Billy sees himself in the wreck. A newspaper declares Billy Abbott died in a DUI. Billy says it's not him, but John tells him he was partying and this happened. Billy asks how long he has, but John sneers and asks if that really matters - he's already behind the wheel. John warns that you have to earn your place in a family. John confronts him, saying he knows all this, but he's scared to admit he cares. Billy asks John how he can change, but John disappears. Billy sits back down on the curb.
Jack is in the chapel chatting with John's ghost. He advises that this heart dilemma isn't just about him - there is Ashley and Abby to think about! He reminds him that when Victor had a chance to let Jack die, he stepped in and risked his own life. Jack says the world would be a better place without him, but John says his family wouldn't agree. John advises Jack to consider this carefully and figure out what's right! Jack feels he has done a terrible job of looking after the Abbott family since John left them - he just doesn't know the answer! Nikki appears, and Jack tells her that it's Traci's call about the heart. Nikki brings up the baby they lost. Jack says that was different. Nikki asks Jack to find it in his heart to get past this war and help a family in need. Jack leaves.
