We first met Devon Hamilton in 2004 while he was helping to build Victor Newman's Rec Center. Growing up in and out of foster homes, Devon's jagged attitude toward the Walnut Grove kids was at an all-time high! At first when Devon met Lily Winters, he acted as though he too was rich and attended a private school on the other side of town. However, after Lily realized the truth, Devon began to warm up to her by filling Lily in on his 'real' life.
After Lily found out that Devon was going to be kicked out of his current foster home, she persuaded her mother Dru - who had also grown up on the streets - to get involved. While Dru's husband Neil wasn't too keen on the idea, Dru and Lily believed in Devon and took him into their home on a temporary foster basis.
In time, Devon told them about his childhood, growing up with a mother on crack and a father who left him as a boy. With the help of the Winters, he learned to read, write and handle all the expectations of a normal everyday life. After Dru started to go through the channels to make Devon's stay permanent, his social worker found out that Neil wasn't on board and scheduled to have Devon sent to a boy's home. Not wanting to go, Devon ran away and was later found sleeping at the Rec Center by Victor Newman. Victor stayed there with Devon until Neil gave in and arrangements were made for the Winters to be his permanent foster parents.
Everything seemed to be going well for Devon until no one remembered his seventeenth birthday. Remembering back to when he was a kid, Devon skipped school and went to the zoo. After he hadn't shown up at home that night, Lily's friend Sierra told the Winters about it being Devon's birthday and his mention that his grandma used to take him to the zoo. Darkness had fallen at the zoo and Devon found that he had wandered into a lion's exhibit and was trapped! Luckily, Lily's Uncle Malcolm was able to save him and pulled him out in time.
However, after Devon went with Lily to get the Winters car, Lily lost control and hit Neil! Badly hurt and needing surgery, Devon was encompassed with deep guilt and blamed himself for the accident. In the end, Neil was fine and Devon was able to let go of his guilt.
Feeling grateful for his new life, Devon sought out his mother and found Yolanda strung out on crack. He tried his best to help her start a new life, even convinced the Winters to take her in for a bit, but in the end, no matter what Devon did or who he had become, was enough to tear his mother away from drugs.
After starting college, Devon came down with meningitis and lost his hearing. With the Winters support and his will to learn to make the best of it, Devon successful underwent surgery for cochlear implants and by the miracle of science is now able to hear! During the ordeal, the Winters made him their son by legally adopting Devon!
However, in December of 2006, Devon faced his most difficult test yet when he became the prime suspect in the Carmen Mesta murder!
Devon's latest challenge was dealing with the news that the daughter his Aunt Tyra has been raising as her own, is actually his half-sister - her mother is Yolanda as well. Devon has helped his new sibling, Ana, deal with the truth about her parentage, and they have been collaborating on music together.

Neil, Cane, and Devon are preparing food for the homeless shelter at Indigo. Billy comes in and tells Lily that he's there to help, saying, "Put me to work." Lily is surprised. They talk about how Colleen always volunteered at the shelter at Thanksgiving.
Ashley arrives at Indigo, saying she has decided to volunteer as well. She sends Billy out to get Faith's car seat, and on his way he bumps into Mac, who is coming in with pies. Jack comes in as well, and the Abbotts marvel that they all ended up there. Lily approaches Mac and apologizes for asking her to look after the baby if something happens to her - she says that Roxanne and Aunt Liv will be there to help. Mac assures her that she'll be around to raise her own baby, and they agree that Mac will definitely be the surrogate. Lily joyfully tells Neil, as Billy stands back and looks miserable. They work for a bit, then Jack says goodbye to Ashley and the baby. Billy needs to get going too. Devon notices that they don't have the dinner rolls yet, and Neil sees that Phyllis was down for them on the list. Jack offers to phone her.
JT comes into Indigo with the rolls and Mac happily greets him. He tells her that his new job has transferred him - they're setting up offices in Genoa City, so he'll be back in town! Jack asks if that means Victoria will be back at Newman, but Mac puts a stop to the shop talk. Mac tells JT about the surrogacy. JT wishes Mac and Lily the best. Neil gets the last of the food out, and everyone claps. Jack thanks Neil for the food to go, for his friend. Neil's family, Mac, and JT, join hands to pray before they eat their own dinner. Neil says he's thankful for his family members being there, his son-in-law, who proves that there is reason to give second chances, and for the loved ones no longer with them.
Devon and Roxy happily spend time together at Crimson Lights. They make plans to go out of town that night, but Devon wants to check on Lily first - she was acting weird last night. Roxy sighs, and points out that Lily was trying to get rid of them because they had just renewed their vows - think 'honeymoon'!
Neil arrives at Crimson Lights, and notes to Devon that Roxanne seems very happy. Devon grins. Neil asks if he's seen Lily - he's trying not to hover. Devon says he has, and that Cane appears to be taking good care of her. Neil wants to believe it will last. They discuss Devon's future plans - he'll focus on music. Neil offers to help him financially. Devon is thrilled that Neil believes in him. Roxanne comes back and Devon kisses her, telling her he knows how lucky he is!
