I don't understand this post. Is the numbers showing rating? If that's the case, Wow! that is a big difference.

There is a big difference, but alot could have to do with the economy and more people having to go to work and less people watching..... If you notice the numbers went down across the whole board, not just for one show...

nyaccent,

It's true. I'm 26 and never watched a soap until I started watching Y&R in early 2006 and neither had any of my friends. Once I stop watching Y&R, I doubt I ever will ever watch a soap again. My mom, aunts and most women in their age group have always watched soaps. The genre does NOT have much appeal for a gen X'ers.

The economy is not bad. There is less than 5 percent unemployment which at one time was considered full employment. The stock market keeps going up. More people may be just tuning out the soaps. I only watch Y&R but it has gone downhill for some time.

There are so many channels and programs to choose from and I don't think that young people tune in the soaps anymore. There are reruns of prime time shows that they seem to prefer.

That is a matter of opinion. The economy is not as strong as it was a couple of years ago. By all appearances, the unemployment rate has stayed steady. However, you need to take into consideration that the unemployment rate that is given, is estimated by the number of people that are receiving unemployment benefits at that time. It does not take into account the people that are not drawing, or not eligible for unemployment benefits for whatever reason. The unemployment rate is certainly higher than the numbers we are provided. Also, it depends on what one does for a living. The service industry is booming for now. With all the losses in the past few years, there are lay offs looming in a lot of industries that are in the forecast.. i.e. the auto industry, mortgage industry, insurance industry. There is a trickle down effect and there are other services that will suffer as a result.

I think the reason for a lot of the ratings change is folks record things on Tivo and have DVR's. I don't think that is taken into account.

Many reasons for soap viewership down across the board since '95. Ratings don't include all the taped versions, some people just use internet sources like this one to stay on top of their favorite shows and I do think that in '95 less women were working outside of the home than now. Y&R still number one and is the most popular on this site, you can tell by the number of posts, responders, etc.

In order to survive in most areas, it requires both the husband and wife to go to work... Years ago the wife could stay home and watch the soaps.... now she has to go to work to help make ends meet.
