Quote Soulsistah: Yes, during LML tenure the overall ratings, on a month to month basis were higher than they've been, on average, compared to the current writing teams. BUT those numbers were still down compared to the previous writing regime(s) and that's what caused so many to lombast LML's writing - she ignored character history completely and changed the direction of the show too much. Many viewers who tuned out were the long-time viewers who've supported the show for decades, and the studio/Sony finally took notice and did something about it (and I won't even get into how much many of the vet actors did NOT like LML's changes on and off the script pages ).

My main point is, regardless of what HW is in place, when the numbers keep going down for the show, it doesn't matter if 10 million people are talking and blogging about the show online if they are NOT WATCHING the show. The ratings drop during the past 11 months is irrefutable evidence of that. And that's all Sony cares about - $, via ad dollars. So viewer protest about characters/storylines DO make a difference because the writers know that too many unhappy viewers = more dropped ratings (see Guiding Light as the latest poster child of what happens when too many viewers tune out over time).

The way the numbers are looking now, and I have never seen them this low, perhaps MAB should start the countdown.

And that is exactly why whining works.

I believe that they should have never fired Latham. You know what they say, if you think it can't get worse, it will. I think that this is the case with this new set of writers. I prefered the changes that Latham was making because I thought they were more fitting with the times. The charcters were much more developled. They were finally getting out of the boxes they had been trapped in for years. Times change, people change and stories should be caught up with the times. The biggest problem I always had with MAB was her concept of trying to put these characters back into the boxes they have been stuck in for years. No growth. No progression. I believe that is why there is alot of whining. She hasn't been any truer to the characters than Latham. Latham was at least giving them dimension. She was making them more multi layered. This is the twenty first century. Women and men are not that simple. They grow, they change. Even the corporate stuff has basically been back burnered and entirely too centered on the dark and meloncoly. This show has been plagued with a string of writers since the death of Mr. Bell. He created these characters. He knew who they were. I don't think that most of the writers really know the characters. They come in and they take them and then create their view of them. They were going to have to change eventually anyway, but in the case of MAB, she seems to have missed the point.

Well, everyone' numbers are down or not where they would like them to be.

I believe more people have tuned out due to personal reasons (working multiple jobs, LOSS OF JOBS, higher interests in current events...things that affect life style/situations are a huge distraction).

The soaps aren't what they used to be BUT with "creative writing" they can reclaim their #1 spot in the TV world. It's not the acting that turns people off so the writers should take heed to our whining/complaining/constructive criticism or whatever it may be. It would only help

I wouldn't call it "whining"; it's more like venting frustration and having the good sense not to watch drivel.

I've been a soap fan and actively watching for 45 years. Every bad deed has a way of eventually being resolved. Sometimes it requires a great deal of patience,. but it will all be fixed eventually. There is a baby switch s/l on DOOL right now. It has been exactly one year since it began, but the sopoilers tell us it will be resolved next Wednesday. Keep complaining and be patient.
