The Y & R has really gone to the dogs since Bell's passing. The story lines have become childish and unbelievable!! They used to have lots of class. I think they have turned the show into low budget school kid stuff. |

I couldn't agree more. I have been a fan of Y&R since the 80s and today's storylines are fluff pieces. I do not like the teenage storylines that they do during the summer months in hopes of bringing in new younger viewers. Any story with Jana, Kevin, Amber and Daniel are BORING. I call them the "boresome foursome". I want the meatier storylines back. I tune out for a time or two in hopes that they get their act together, but I am still waiting. I just flip to commercials when the filler stories are on. The Abbotts have all but just about been written out of the show. Which is sad because they were/are terrific actors. The Newmans, well they will ALWAYS come out smelling like a rose. I love the fueding between the families and the businesses. Now that is real life stuff. Not these stupid chipmunk hero, terroni-macaroni, baby stealing storylines. Writers: Bring on the stuff that Y&R is known for and respected for. Bring on the stories that have put Y&R on the top of the charts for YEARS. (yes, I know that they are still on top, but not the way they used to be.) If Y&R viewers wanted to watch goofy, out of this world, hardly believable storylines, they should flip over to Days of our Lives. Now there is a show that is unbelievable! |

I totally agree with the OP! I really miss the way that the original creator of this show and its characters just brought them to life. They were such believable characters written with the sense of who they were. Since he died there have been so many different writers that this show has just lost sense of its history and the characters are not even recognizable anymore. This new set of writers have absolutely no sense of who these characters are and they just can't write romance! I miss the corporate drama at Y&R! It really as the guts of this show. The characters stories were built into it, but the corporate action was always in the forefront. I am afraid that these writers aren't going to be very good at that either. The show lacks class, for sure, but what it is really lacking the most is creativity. |

There is a BIG difference in writers who write with the idea of fitting the characters into the PLOT and not worrying what or how a character is motivated by or what the history of a character is than a writer who writes CHARACTER DRIVEN s/l's making sure that the characters stay true to their roots, motivations, likes, dislikes, wants, desires, background, childhood, etc. With BILL BELL the CHARACTERS were rich, multi-layed, and easily recognizeable but NOT so much in the last 5 years or so! We want CHARACTER DRIVEN s/l's and NOT PLOT-DRIVEN ones where the characters are so unrecognizeable they are but a sliver of their former selves. |

When the storylines are character driven it brings more believability to the story. When the writers use the characters to advance a storyline, it not only takes the character "out of character" but runs into the problem of becoming dumb and unbelievable. LIke this week of EVERYBODY coming down on Billy and protecting the Newmans. I can see Jack and Ashley coming down on him, not to protect the Newmans necessarily, but just a disappointment in his actions. HOwever, why in the world is everyone else so quick to protect the Newman image and reputation??? The Newmans have screwed pretty much everybody at one time or another either indirectly or directly. Most if not all of these people who are slamming Billy for what he did has done some pretty devious smear/slandering of another person in their past. At least what Billy said at Victor and Victoria was TRUE. |
