The Young and the Restless - MESSAGE BOARDS

There are a lot of people that seem to complain about this show anymore and I agree, it's pushing the limits of reality, but it's just a soap and not supposed to mimic the real world. If you want reality, tune into CNN.

Also, look at it this way... I read an article recently that said the demise of the soap opera is due to viewers finding alternative, entertaining, over the top stories and characters on reality TV, so they are leaving the soaps to watch the talk shows and other reality programs. With those kind of statistics, and that kind of competition, doesn't it make sense to see how the writers might be trying to compete with the unreality of TRUE reality by cooking up these strange story lines?

Some people might contend that these shows aren't art, and maybe they aren't in the strictest sense of the word, but just enjoy it for what it is or stop watching. If it's really getting some of you angry, and angry enough to post on this message board, then stop watching it or admit that you actually DO like it enough for it to stir something in you!

ITA... I mean, if everything happened the way everyone wanted it to and they tied up all the loose ends and made everyone happy, it wouldn't be a soap!... it would be the freakin' brady bunch lol. As much as we all hate waiting for things to play out and don't understand why the writers do stupid things sometimes, we're all still addicted and watch and wait for what comes next

I agree!! As much as some of the s/l make me crazy, I just cant tune out. I MUST see what happends next. And these actors are doing such a great job. Sure some of the s/l's are dark but it's a soap! It's NOT real life. I beleive some of the best stuff is yet to come!

ITA. If I wanted fluff I would sit and watch Ellen. I don't mind the dark s/ls. The world is a scary place and escaping to a place which is not reality is ok with me. It's the same reason I read horror stories. I know it's not true. The great thing about it is I understand that it's all fiction that no one is getting hurt and everyone is hot to watch; an added bonus. I've been watching for over 30 yrs and the soap has taken alot of dark turns over the years. I don't understand why all the uproar now. Kay literally killed her first husband Phillip. It was implied for years that she did it on purpose. Now she is the saint of the Y&R and no one would dare say a bad thing about her.

What would the soap look like if all the characters were good and they all married the love of their lives without any heartache? I don't need to watch a show about families bickering about finances, childrearing, homeschooling, parent teacher night, car pooling. Sorry but that's called reality and I get that 24/7. I watch my soap to escape for 35 mins a day to another place where people are beautiful, rich, talented but they are so messed up my life looks like a walk in the park.

I love reality tv so I can understand where this is coming from. Alot of the dark story lines are growing on me as I understand life is not a perfect fairy tale. The only thing I hate about this is the fact there seem to be only dark story lines right now. I hope they wrap some of these dark story lines up with some light story lines. You feel you know these characters when you tune in day after day and I would like to share some happiness along with the sadness
