I was turned off in August of 2008 by the abrupt changes in style of writing and directing. The directions that the storyline took were NOT based on logic, reality, research or any natural progression that stories take. The writing was just plain bad--PERIOD! I decided to hang on to see just how far the writers would go and they have gone so much farther into the depths of depressing storylines than I ever thought they would dare go.

The PC3 rewrite was horrible and fizzled. The hysterectomy for Lily was last straw for me. I thought both were a bit extreme but making a 22-year old barren while every other woman in GC--no matter what her age or affliction--could get pregnant and have children was horrible. I could accept the cancer storyline for Lily because various kinds of cancers can be cured at various stages and levels of development. I have not yet accepted that hysterectomy; the writers went too far to the extreme to create problems for this couple and their marriage. AND I will never understand why!!

Most of the storylines are too extreme and heavy handed in the gloom and doom category. The writers simply do not know when to stop! Shock and awe don't work anymore. Storylines need to be meaty and character-driven. We like to know what people are doing AND not what is being done to them thru no fault of their own. Entirely too many characters have lost their flavor and no longer appeal to the viewers.

I am still here reading and waiting to see how much father these depressing storylines will go. The slide downhill has not yet stopped. This babyswitch storyline is the living end. Also Bringing back TOO MANY old characters and throwing current core cast members under the bus does not make for engaged viewing and it definitely does NOT make good solid business sense either. I am still waiting for this soap to improve. I don't watch as faithfully as I once did nor do I watch whole episodes b/c I cannot take a whole episode. The only reason I watch now is Lily & Cane. I like the saying of one LANE fan: "I do not watch Y&R. I watch Lily and Cane." That's me! I really DO NOT care about all the other crappy storylines. (JMO)

You know, Y&R used to be about these great families the Abbott's, the Newman's, the Chancellor's, etc. There was backstabbing, and fighting, and cheating, and serious issues and what not. But at the end it was about great family moments and great loves and business intrigue.

Since William Bell died, the writing has turned away from family and love, intrigue and betrayal and towards death and continuous suffering - for some characters more than others (the Carletons, the Winters, Sharon, etc). And by the way, it is obvious by the ratings that numbers starting to drop when the writing took a different direction.

This is not what I want in a soap. I watch to relax, not to be saddened or sickened to the point of me wanting to turn off the TV. Y&R has started to resemble a horror movie and I don't watch horror movies.

Again, I am borrowing something someone pointed out in one of the threads, but Y&R has always been a step above other soaps because it didn't pull the crap a lot of other soaps did, like ghosts and baby-switches. Y&R didn't need to do that. Why start now?

Quote bigdawgmama: Thank you for creating a place for us to vent. I am one of many who feels digusted with the dark and evil downward turn this once great soap has taken. We can all agree, I hope, that there always needs to be conflict in order to maintain tension and suspense, right? What bothers me is that all of the suspense and drama is so painful to watch. If I started to name all the writing flaws, we'd be here for days. I agree with another poster who said it seemed to start with the Sabrina storyline. And maybe even farther back with the reliquary fiasco. There were many missed opportunities to broaden our enlightenment and enjoyment. I would have loved to get to know Brad's mother, Rebecca. William Bardwell was a great addition, but Jeffrey, not so much. What has Eden brought to the story? I could go on, but you all already know all the horrific plots we've been subjected to over the last few years. The whole Carmen Mesta/David Chow/Ji Min/Drucilla/Walter Palin mess was at times mysterious, but nonetheless, every one of them died! Is murder the only way to resolve a storyline? Personally, I am about two weeks away from turning off Y&R, if the writers don't resolve the baby switch, DNA's, Teroni, and Sharon-Nick-Phyllis storylines in a reasonable, believable, and watchable fashion. I don't blame EB for putting on the brakes in his contract talks. I'm sure the writers don't pay this board much attention, but if they do, here's hoping they hear what the fans are screaming "WE WANT OUR Y&R BACK!" We crave love, romance, fun, passion, nosy mother in laws, naughty flings, rejoicing at weddings, rejoicing at childbirth, crying when a loved one gets hurt. We love big galas, fancy dinners, romantic vacations, and we also love every day things like shopping for school clothes, the poignancy of sending kids off to college, the heartbreak of caring for ailing parents, occasional health problems, a childs first crush, a kids first real job, big family holidays and so on. Speaking for myself, I don't like seeing murder, animals abused, women who go crazy at the drop of a hat, men who constantly berate their spouses and children, medical/law enforcement/and legal professions being portrayed as inept and incompetent. Where's the love and friendship development? Where's the teaching your children how to behave respectfully, by example? Where's the determination to make a marriage stronger and better, even during hard times? Why not portray counseling and mental health care in a positive light? Ok, I've taken way too much time, but I'm passionate about the destruction of a top quality show. I've enjoyed Y&R since day one. And I want to keep watching and enjoying it. Thanks again for the avenue to release our frustration and discomfort!

Great post, J. I have not watched since an episode or two after Nick found out about the baby. As someone else posted, I thought surely all the heart transplant/baby swapping crap would be just rumors, but obviously, these jacka$$e$ thought they had gold on their hands (I'd be more than happy to tell them what the brown, smelly mess really is). How many emmys has Y&R won for writing recently? I am not a fan, but I could deal with gloom and doom if it made one iota of sense or anything was EVER resolved. I have DVR still recording it, but I usually just delete the episodes. I think I may conserve the hours in my queue and save them for something worthwhile like, I don't know, infomercial reruns. At least those are kind of humorous, and who couldn't use one more blanket/jacket-thingie?

I honestly hope that they do read these and pay heed to the people who ultimately pay their salary, but in the event they don't, I am doing the only other thing I can do to get my point across; I am not watching until this stupid CRAP ends!

This thread was created to post disfavor or pleasure in the writing. Still there are several posts on the board and more created daily that are a clogging up other postings with criticism.

Thanks, C and to all the other posters who commented. After I left my post yesterday I got to thinking about all of the people who have died on this soap in the last 3-4 years or so. I left so many out! John, Tom Fisher, Marge, Cassie (even though that was a bit more than 3 years)Cassie's bio father Frank, also a bit more than 3 years ago, whoever was killed by Cameron and put in Sharon's trunk, Sheila, Hope, and the guy Amber thought she killed with the bag of money (can't remember his name, Sabrina, Sabrina's baby, and now Ashley's baby, just to add to the already mentioned list of Dru, Brad, Carmen Mesta, David Chow, Ji Min, the guy Kevin thought he killed but who had a heart attack, and now Colleen. I've probably left some out. Sorry for forgetting so many names, but the list is endless isn't it? Man, that's an awful lot of murder, accidental deaths, and what have you. Again, isn't there a more sensible way to resolve a story than killing characters off? I'm not holding out much hope for Y&R if EB does leave permanently. I will try to be a fan through thick and thin, but pretty soon it'll be too thin to support this fan.

I totally agree, I am have watched y&r for 25 years and never have i been more disappointed . Why was Sharon baby taken from her, who ever is writing the material is really messing up. Enough of Adam , he needs to pay for everything he has done . Why would you want Sharon to suffer more than she already has

Dont make sense.

Same thing happened to Lauren....Ashley has never had sustainable happiness....Colleen is dead.....Nine never found her child. Reunions happen and switching Sharon's baby is not the end of Y&R. Fact is..it makes for great drama...and gives Sharon a s/l.

I have been watching Y&R for over 30 years. These current storylines are pathetic. What happened to creative writing? Really, Ashley walking around thinking she is pregnant for months and Sharon's baby stolen by Adam then given to Ashley?

I used to enjoy watching this show, but it is over for me. I have deleted the dvr timer for Y&R. I will find something that is entertaining and realistic to watch. Y&R was the only show (daytime or night) that I ever watched regularly and this is the first time I ever post to a website.

I have to give the actors credit for doing a great job carrying out the storylines. I was glad to see Traci and Nina back and thought a storyline with them and Lauren could be fun.

As one poster pointed out, Ashley tells the nurse Adam delivered her baby and then says help him with a stool, he's almost blind is very stupid.

As a more than 23 year viewer all I can say about the show now is "Love it, love it, love it." This is what the drama in daytime drama is all about.
