Y&R Writing Discussion Thread!

Administration will establish this thread to discuss the issue of the overall writing of the Y&R.

Dozens of threads have been posted recently about this one topic - they will be closed.

Negative or positive thoughts are welcome. As always, bashing of other posters is not allowed, i.e. Do not tell someone not to watch the show anymore if they express a negative opinion on the writing.

Also, this thread is not to be used to discuss specific character storylines - just the overall writing of the show.

There is a 'no-bashing' thread available to discuss the storylines and writing also, for those who prefer:

In three words.......The Writing Sucks!
Yes, there are some good scenes in some of the epis, but IMO, they are too few in between.
The s/l with Gloria and Jeff gets on my nerves. I would love for Michael and Kevin to disown her once and for all. I'm just totally disgusted and sick of the character. I don't even find her funny anymore, just pathetic.

Adam and the baby switch.........dumb, torturing to watch.
I won't even begin to discuss the merry-go-round of Phick/Shick and accorsding to the spoilers soon to become SHAM. The bad plots just seem unending.

Thanks for opening this up for us. We all know the entire cast of Y&R are not to blame for the poor writing and s/l's, they are victims too. I guess all we viewers are really asking from the writers for is for Y&R to return to really great drama, factual and realistic stories - and please just get away from the evil, horrid, sad, dark, tragic, mess of a show that it is now. There is not one happy character currently on the show. That is just sad. Thank you for reading.

You are right Wheels, Not a single solitary happy character on the entire show! Not one. Murphy, maybe, but he's al.ways worried about Katherine and Jill, so maybe not him either.

Thanks for starting this thread. I find the story lines for the past year to be of very poor quality and thought. The writers resort to tired old plots that have been used many, many times before but think we, the fans, don't remember. I think the program totally reached a bad turning point when Victor and Sabrina became pregnant. It was not so much the age difference but the fact we all knew Victor had had the operation to not have children. This was glossed over by saying he had told Kay that he had the operation reversed. Really, now!? The story lines have progressed downward since then.

They have people die left and right. An animal is killed. A young man wears a chipmunk head and holds-up banks. A child is placed in a coma over an allergy. Couples commit adultry left and right. Babies are switched at birth. A young woman develops cancer and on and on.

Soap Opera's are supposed to bring us some fun and romance in the afternoon. Not always doom and gloom. Until the writers produce more intelligent story lines I will not be watching Y&R. The writers should take a lesson from the loss of the "Guiding Light". No program can last if the fans choose not to watch.

I agree with all that has been said so far. This baby switch thing is an embarrasment and painfully boring to watch. Gloria and jeff is just so silly.

I do like the Lily cancer s/l and the two of them back together. I think there is a really good oppertunity with this one but we never see it because obviously this STUPID baby switch thing is more important.

The bottom line for me is that it's pretty hard to watch these days and I find I only bother with it once or twice a week right now.

I am so fed up with the Ashley/Adam/Sharon/Baby s/l that after all these years (I have watched since day one) I am ready to throw in the towel. Now I FF lots of scenes but I am almost past that. I wish the writers would ready this board and see how unhappy the fans are.

I agree with everyone....and also think the writers really must be on drugs because it is so unrealistic. I stopped watching when they killed off Zapato....that was the last horrid straw. The baby switch thing has been done to death but y&r brought it to an even SICKER level!!!
I read the updates and if one of teh few characters i like is on....I'll tape and ff to that part. AFter watching from day one in 1973....i MISS the y&r and the past writers. I really think there is something seriously wrong witht he writers mental state. GET A GRIP Y&R! Mr. Bell, I'm sure, would be embarressed!!!

And now we're supposed to believe Victor took bullets for Jack when we saw what really happened. Unbelievable!

I tell you what the Threads on this Board alone about how tick off folk is about the Ashley/Adam/Sharon storyline is a huge indication of how disappointed a lot of viewers are and this doesn't have to do with fanbases, viewers sick and tired of seeing the exact same Rinse Recycle Repeat s/l . I have never seen so many threads all at once with the same displeasures, to me That Speaks Volumes.

Thank you for creating a place for us to vent. I am one of many who feels digusted with the dark and evil downward turn this once great soap has taken. We can all agree, I hope, that there always needs to be conflict in order to maintain tension and suspense, right? What bothers me is that all of the suspense and drama is so painful to watch. If I started to name all the writing flaws, we'd be here for days. I agree with another poster who said it seemed to start with the Sabrina storyline. And maybe even farther back with the reliquary fiasco. There were many missed opportunities to broaden our enlightenment and enjoyment. I would have loved to get to know Brad's mother, Rebecca. William Bardwell was a great addition, but Jeffrey, not so much. What has Eden brought to the story? I could go on, but you all already know all the horrific plots we've been subjected to over the last few years. The whole Carmen Mesta/David Chow/Ji Min/Drucilla/Walter Palin mess was at times mysterious, but nonetheless, every one of them died! Is murder the only way to resolve a storyline? Personally, I am about two weeks away from turning off Y&R, if the writers don't resolve the baby switch, DNA's, Teroni, and Sharon-Nick-Phyllis storylines in a reasonable, believable, and watchable fashion. I don't blame EB for putting on the brakes in his contract talks. I'm sure the writers don't pay this board much attention, but if they do, here's hoping they hear what the fans are screaming "WE WANT OUR Y&R BACK!" We crave love, romance, fun, passion, nosy mother in laws, naughty flings, rejoicing at weddings, rejoicing at childbirth, crying when a loved one gets hurt. We love big galas, fancy dinners, romantic vacations, and we also love every day things like shopping for school clothes, the poignancy of sending kids off to college, the heartbreak of caring for ailing parents, occasional health problems, a childs first crush, a kids first real job, big family holidays and so on. Speaking for myself, I don't like seeing murder, animals abused, women who go crazy at the drop of a hat, men who constantly berate their spouses and children, medical/law enforcement/and legal professions being portrayed as inept and incompetent. Where's the love and friendship development? Where's the teaching your children how to behave respectfully, by example? Where's the determination to make a marriage stronger and better, even during hard times? Why not portray counseling and mental health care in a positive light? Ok, I've taken way too much time, but I'm passionate about the destruction of a top quality show. I've enjoyed Y&R since day one. And I want to keep watching and enjoying it. Thanks again for the avenue to release our frustration and discomfort!

Me either. The writers struck a nerve.

This was the straw that broke the camels back.
