Quote kristindanae: I have been reading for the last several weeks on more than one thread that this person doesn't like this or that person doesn't like that...I for one think the writers are doing a wonderful job of creating drama, conflict, contraversy, and everything a "SOAP OPERA" is suppost to do!!! I wonder, if everybody got their happy ending, how many people would want to watch? why would you watch? just so you can make sure the flowers are blooming...i mean come on, we watch to see how our favorite characters will work out their problems, and hope it all goes our way, but when it doesn't, you shouldn't get mad and threaten to quite watching, or trying to get everybody to turn off their tv's so the rateings will fall, thats just silly!! ok, well thats my piece..what do you think? I think that maybe you're a writer for the show. How can dark story lines such as Adam contributing to the death of Ashley's baby, the dismissal of a loyal employee by Victor, the promiscuity of Sharon and the other bed hopping on the show be defended? And how can an innocent child be put in a coma by the evil doings of a deranged Mary Jane? I would continue to watch if there were decent story lines such as married people being monogamus with their wives/husbands and Katherine's daughter not being such a cruel witch to the woman she used to think of as her mother, almost sending her into a fatal stroke. Where's the attraction? |

I am not sure how long you have been watching, but for people like me who have been watching since it's inception, i.e. when Phillip Chancellor was alive, the storylines keep getting worse by the day! What the writers have concocted with DNAs, pregnancies, baby daddies and relationships is horrendous to say the least!!!! When Y$R first aired, the stories seemed more "real" and it was pleasant to watch. Now it seems they have become unrealistic and unaccountable. Inasmuch as I respect your opinion, most of us will beg to disagree. Best of luck enjoying the show...very soon, you maybe the only one watching! |

Did everyone really think Victor locking a man up in his basement was real? Or Brad being kept in a cage was real? Soaps are for entertainment. If it is reality you want we are bombarded with inane reality shows. Watch those! Watch CNN 24/7....there you get real! Thanks but I will escape into my soap sometimes and enjoy the soapiness of it! |

After reading all the posts under this topic, I admit I can see both points of view. If the soaps were too much like real life, we probably wouldn't be entertained...in fact, we might be downright bored! We do watch to escape...to see a mystery unfold...to watch a romance develop...to watch a romance fall apart...to laugh...to cry...and so forth. We expect the storylines to be somewhat farfetched...SOMEWHAT! There needs to be more of a mix of a story that is a little farfetched but at the same time somewhat believable. Lately on Y&R there has been so much happening with DNA testing. It seems like DNA testing is involved in everyone's lives! It's just too much. The bed swapping with Nick/Sharon/Jack/Phyllis has been going on for far too long, too! They need to put a couple together for more than a day or two before they switch beds again! Same with Brooke/Ridge/Taylor on B&B. I know the cast is limited and so couples do trade off, but do they have to do it every other day? As far as the happily ever after endings...we know that's not going to happen on a soap. I don't know that anyone really wants it to, but can't it happen for a while? Does everyone on the soap have to have their lives be in turmoil? Stories lately seem recycled. They lack creativity. I want to be shocked. I want to be WOW'd! I want to feel like, "Gosh, I sure didn't see that coming." Think if they would have let on that MJ was Patty Williams before today and shocked the audience before all the speculation. By today, 99.9% of everyone had it figured out! There are authors/writers out there who write books and movies that have creative, unique stories that really shock, WOW and entertain...I just don't feel it with the soaps right now. I have been a fan for more years than I care to admit. I think I am "loyal" to characters that I like so much and that's what keeps me coming back. I'll admit though...there are days that I don't watch. I'll use the websites for an update. Thankfully we have the ability to record/DVR the shows and we can FF through scenes we don't care to watch...for me right now that would be the scenes that involve Adam and/or Ashley. I guess those of us who are feeling a "thumbs down" for the show(s) right now should be a little thankful for those who are pleased because otherwise we could kiss the shows goodbye and that would be it. We have the option to FF, not watch, read the posts and updates online, and then tune back in when we have an interest. Those of us who are feeling discouraged...I guess we can try to have hope that things will get better. There just has to be more to write about than "Who's your daddy?" or bringing someone else back from the dead. Look at Y&R and how many people they have brought back from the dead or supposed dead (Nick, Victor, Katherine, Phillip and now there is speculation that Nikki is next). I would like to see something new brought to the table. |

I would like to see something new brought to the table. you make some really great points, and i do agree with most of them...i only started this thread after reading on a different thread, that somebody was trying to recruit followers to quite watching the show for a period of time so that the rateings would fall, and that infuriated me, everybody is intitled to his/her opinion, but don't try to ruin it for those of us that are devoted to y&r..wouldn't they regret it if their plan worked and the show was cancelled!! so the s/l's are a little jumbled up right now, i sure they will work themselves out (like they always do) |

I know what you mean about the boycott! Some GL viewers keep saying after GL they will watch nothing else on CBS. Why would you help doom other soaps by not watching? |

Thank you!! I love how people (on other message boards) are disgusted by the Adam/Rafe sl, but where were they when Sharon had unprotected sex with three guys in the same week? Or when Jack slept with two women on the same day, or all the other countless bedhopping that happens on soap operas. And saying that the Adam/Rafe storyline isn't real? Seriously? Because Noah coming back from summer camp 6 years older was? Or Sheila coming back from the dead three times is? Or Jack talking to his father's ghost? It's a soap opera - it's not meant to be real life. I enjoy it for the entertainment value, and usually for the storylines. |

I will remain with Y&R as long as Nikki, Victor, Paul, Cathrine, Jack and Jill continue to have great story lines! |

I think both SHICK and PHICK fans would probably both agree that getting a happy ending is not how we judge whether or not a show is worth watching or not. Speaking as a SHICK fan, I watched the show all through PHICK's relationship, as I'm sure most people did whether you rooted for this couple or not. My point is that the show is becoming unwatchable because it's starting to insult our intelligence. Almost all of the storyline's currently on the air are highly implausible, particularly for Y&R. You see Y&R is the most watched show and has the most loyal viewers because the storyline's were always on point with history and with people's personalities. Of course, this is not always the case, because it is a soap, not a documentary. But when every major storyline fails to make any logical sense, it pisses the viewers off. We have a right to vent, because our viewership pays this show's salaries. We are responsible for this show's success, so we have a right to be heard. The storylines, at this point, are so beyond believable, it's made viewers turn the tv off, including myself. Take a look below: Neil/Tyra/Karen: We're suppose to believe that Neil, who begged his fair Karen to come back from NY cheated on her in the middle of his restaurant, a month after he married. Yeah that makes sense. Devon: We're suppose to believe that Devon, who has a g/f, is fantasizing about a woman he's known all his life as his aunt. Right. Ashley/Adam/Victor: We're suppose to believe that Ashley still thinks she's pregnant after she had a massive fall with blood everywhere, no one knows. Not to mention the fact that her life is probably in danger with that dead fetus still inside her. Adam: Adam is injecting himself with Botox. Please. And then pretending to be gay...going as far as to sleep with him...all to get back at Victor....Right. Nick/Phyllis/Sharon: no words Mac/Billy/Chloe: We're suppose to believe that playboy Billy is still hung up on boring azz Mac after 6 years. Not buying it. Jill/Jeff/Gloria: Lost all of their money in one bank that went under to avoid paying taxes...and then they show Jill doing nails....laughable. Cane/Jill/Langley: This was the one storyline that I was kind of excited about, but is ruined because now we're told that Phillip3 left because he was gay??? Are they serious? All of these stories above are the reasons ppl are turning off the TV. Not because a storyline is going in a certain direction. I'd like to think that we're all more intelligent than that. |

What's real is knowing that there are gay people living in Genoa City. Not quite sure what message boards you were reading, but I do know that there were multiple threads, almost too many, going on about Sharon and Jack when they had their escapades. Every third or fourth thread probably had people discussing it, whether that was the original topic or not. Just an FYI. |

Disappointment doesn't translate into non-watching for me either. However, there is a big difference between being disappointed because a s/l didn't result in the way I want as opposed to genuine concerns over the quality of writing on this show. IMO, constructive criticism is alive and well and there's nothing wrong with it. |

Another thing is the length of these storylines. The couple swap has been going on for how many years? It took what 2 or 3 years for Gloria to get caught as the culprit of the face cream scandal. Ji-Min and Carmen's murder both took a long time to solve. It takes to long from start to finish on these stories. |
