One Life to Live and ABC Team Up To Prevent Pregnancy!

Tuesday, March 11 2008

Kristen & Brandon (Starr & Cole - ABC)
Fans have been outraged by the recent One Life to Live storyline where young couple Starr Manning (Kristen Alderson) and Cole Thornhart (Brandon Buddy) were about to have their first sexual encounter – but were stopped by Starr’s father Todd (Trevor St. John). However, we need to understand that this type of scenario is all too real in this day and age.

Therefore, One Life to Live and ABC have come together with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy by giving fans a little insight into how the actress felt throughout the taping of this whole controversial storyline by means of a new blog: Start Talking With Kristen!

In her first weekly installment, Kristen Alderson talked about herself, how it felt to do the scenes with co-star Brandon Buddy (Cole) and her views on the pressures surrounding teen sex, etc. We think once fans read a bit from the young star’s perspective most will see this storyline has been put out there to do some good – and to help those young viewers who are in the same predicament that Starr and Cole have found themselves in!

Along with Kristen’s weekly blog, readers will also get the added benefit of reading current stats surrounding teen sex and pregnancy that may help not only those struggling with this common issue of today but for those parents out there who have always found it hard to talk to your kids about such touchy issues.

Soaps.com wants to commend ABC and One Life to Live for bringing this issue to the public’s eye. And to Kristen and Brandon, well done! You took what could have been a very uncomfortable storyline to play and executed it with sheer professionalism!

I was so proud of the show and the show's actors and producers. They made it very realistic. And the scene was done very well. I am excited to read the blog week to week.

I think it's very topical and many of us and our children are going through this everyday ... for decades!!! I think they handled this very well ... I think it was much better than the drunken irresponsible sex that Colby had on AMC. And the rape that resulted into a marriage on GH between Luke and Laura. And I luv Luke and Laura ... but i could've done without the rape scene. I'm thinking that was about came about with the Patty Hearst relationship with her captor?!
But KUDOS to Kristen and Brandon .. our modern day Romeo and Juliet!! :P

I know it's there and all that. Starr is a wonderful actress. I just wish someone had held onto some kind of pride and kept it out of the soap!!! Maybe have Starr play that she's 16 when she is ACTUALLY 18 and then I wouldn't mind the storyline. I know my opinion sure isn't going to change anything. I'll just tune back in when this is over with. Starr was too young to be put in that position. It made me sick to watch. I read many comments agreeing with this. Kiddie porn is icky. I want to watch ADULTS in situations not children in sex scenes. Yuck Yuck Yuck

Funny someone used Colby's scene as an example. First they had her be drinking (as teenagers)...but it just wasn't so much build up. Starr's character plays that she's intelligent and stands up for what is right. I think such a wrong message was sent. Starr wouldn't of came up with, well gee...I'm leaving town...the time is now right. This was stupid.

Remember, we have very young viewers that we are trying to show some examples here

Romeo and Juliet??? I can't agree there. Romeo was just having funny little feelings when his hand would touch Langstons. He's already showing signs that he may be going to be straying soon too!!!! Ah gee...let's have sex.

I agree that this is a topic that needs to be addressed and talked about, however I think the show/ABC did a disservice to the teen sex storyline by having Todd go so far over the top, his rampage and subsequent insanity completely over shadowed the entire effect of the storyline, it became more about Todd and his problems than Star and Cole's lack of judgment. As a father I too would be extremely angry and disappointed but this was way to much even for Todd.

I finally got to watch the episode over the weekend on Soapnet and I have to say that Kristen Alderson and Brandon Buddy did a wonderful job. Although it was hard to watch after watching Kristen grow up on the show, it was done just right, great job to the actors. Is it wrong? We have to many kids today that want to grow up to fast, think Jamie Spears is a good role model? Hopefully this storyline will bring kids and parents together and talk about what is going on. Great job ABC, OLTL, Kristen Alderson and Brandon Buddy. I do have to say that I do think Todd went a little over the top with beating Markko and then Cole, but remember the character, Todd raped Marty and seeing his daughter in bed with a guy freaked him out and he is now having to deal with the consequences of his actions and see the other side of the coin and how it feels, although we know that Cole didn't rape Starr, it is a shock to see your child. Although Todd went over the top, Trevor St. John did a great job also.
