JOHN MCBAIN'S HISTORY
When John McBain came to Llanview in 2003, he fooled many into thinking he was a pool scout, most notably Natalie Buchanan. It soon became known that John was an FBI agent, one of the good guys.
A man haunted by many demons, John has loved and lost. When he finally found his father's killer, John was ready to put some of the pain behind and open himself up to the one woman who knew him best... Natalie.
However, on one fatefully night, John was involved in a massive car accident and presumed dead, leaving Natalie devastated. What no one knew was that John was alive, in a hospital bed, thought to be Hugh Hughes! With the truth finally out, John now faces a new road ahead filled with hard, emotional challenges.
Though John and Natalie tried to make a go of their relationship, things didn't work out, and John started dating Marty Saybrooke. Just as John and Marty grew close, John was left to believe that Marty had died after blowing up in a van while John was chasing the people stalking Cole.
Months later, not able to get Marty out of his mind, John put the pieces together and realized that Todd Manning, who had rescued Marty from Lee Ramsey's, where she'd been held hostage after a memory loss, had been holding her at his place.
John saved Marty, who had no memory of him, and helped her realize who Todd Manning really was - not the man who Marty had fallen in love with! It took a while, but John was able to get through to Marty, and rebuild their relationship - and even went back to work on the police force, as well as bought Rodi's.
John's next case was trying to prove that Jared Banks was behind the stalkings surrounding Jessica Brennan. Natalie didn't appreciate John implying such a thing, but John only wanted to get to the truth - in order to protect Natalie, who he admitted he'd always care about.
John fights the bad guys - for the good guys - and makes Llanview a safe place for all!

Friday, November 20 2009: The Unsuspecting Father...
John checks in with Clint again then Natalie emerges from his bedroom and says she couldn't rest - not as long as Mitch is still alive. Though Natalie wants to go to Napa, to kill Mitch, John warns, "He's taken too much from you already. Don't let him take away your future too." When Natalie wonders how she'll say goodbye to Jared, John urges her to trust that those who love her will take care of her - but Natalie replies, "You know me better than that." Natalie again apologizes to John and says he's not only a good cop, but he's always been a good friend to her - and to Jared. Natalie remembers when she thought that John was dead and knows it's going to take more than taking everything one day at a time for her to get through this.
Just as Natalie is about to head home, Rex arrives at John's and takes his sister in his arms. John gives them some time alone and leaves then Natalie tells Rex that Jared was framed and that he was murdered - by Mitch Laurence! Rex reminds Natalie that Mitch is dead, but just as Natalie says that she saw him kill Jared, Roxy walks in and hears Natalie finish, "Mitch is alive and well!"
Thursday, November 19 2009: She's Not Your Daughter...
After John opens his door, to Natalie, she slaps him hard across the face and says, "You killed him, you bastard! My husband is dead because of you!" Natalie pushes her way through and cries, "You made me doubt my husband." John tries to apologize, but Natalie snaps, screaming that she hates John for everything he's done - including the fact that Jared knew that Natalie doubted him! As Natalie starts punching John, he takes hold of her then pulls her close, as Natalie sobs in pain. After a bit, Natalie pulls away and dares him to tell her there was nothing else he could have done to save Jared - and John admits he should have found out Mitch was alive sooner… then Jared would still be alive. Natalie rehashes the last words Jared said to her and breaks down in John's arms. Later, Natalie apologizes for hitting and blaming John then takes the blame herself - saying she lied to John about going to Napa - then cries, "He's dead because of me!" Natalie falls to the floor, and John comforts her saying, "It's not your fault. Laurence played you, he played all of us." Natalie says she can't go home to her and Jared's bedroom, because it's like he's still there, then John offers her his room - for as long as she wants it. Natalie leans against his chest, and John wraps his arm around her.
