What year did Larry Wolek last appear?

Does anyone know what year we last saw Dr. Larry Wolek? Did they ever explain what happened to him? I feel that they treated a long-time vet very wrongly. They should have at least given him a proper exit story. He was one of two actors there since the 1960's till the 90s.
