Best & Worst Soap Storylines of 2007: Writer's Picks!

Wednesday, January 02 2008

Zoe/Zarf Transgener Storyline (Soaps.com)
At the end of every year, no matter what soap we are a fan of, there’s always going to be those storylines we loved along with others we hated. Well, fans, based on emails we’ve received throughout 2007, Soaps.com has compiled a list of the most outspoken Best and Worst Soap Storylines of the year for each of the nine soaps! Although it was a tough choice, below you’ll find the writer’s picks for this year’s poll!

All My Children

Best Storyline:

“Spike's Deafness Storyline” - Emotionally acted, informative and interested are the words that best describe this punchy storyline. In addition to bringing fans information about deafness and cochlear implants, fans raved about the acting of Alicia Minshew (Kendall) and started talking Emmy's!

“Zoe/Zarf Transgener Storyline” - Fans loved this emotional journey involving Zoe (a transgendered rocker) and fan-fave Bianca. Ever since the two characters left for Europe, fans have clamored for their return to Pine Valley!

Worst Storylines:

“Satin Slayer Storyline” - In addition to killing off several beloved characters, including Dixie, the storyline was long and drawn out.

“Jenny's Daddy Storyline” - This conventional who's-the-daddy plot had a twist: Adam left Krystal to handle childbirth alone! Fans hated that action and hated even more when Adam kidnapped and tried to sell the baby.

“Spike's Deafness Storyline” - Though fans loved the storyline at first, as it drew out over many weeks, fans tired of Kendall focusing on one child
(Spike) and neglecting another (newborn premie Ian).

As the World Turns

Best Storyline:

“Luke/Noah Romance Storyline” - Fans are raving about the chemistry between Luke and Noah and have applauded the writers for taking chances with a gay romance.

“The Gwen and Will Baby Storyline” - Very emotional is what we all have to say about learning Will and Gwen can never have biological children.

Worst Storylines:

"The Return of Rosanna" - Though we were very excited to see Rosanna's return, we all quickly realized this wasn't the same Rosanna: "too dependent" is what many fans have to say about Rosanna since her return.

“Carly's Return” - Aggravating is the word most Carly fans use to describe this storyline. Though Carly has always been manipulative, fans agree that her character has been written over the top and she has gone too far in recent months. They don't like the changes in her.

Bold and the Beautiful

Best Storylines:

"Brooke's Rape" - The storyline was mostly believable and the acting was excellent. The plot lost a little steam as Brooke's recovery was on the quick side, but the storylines that have come out of this event have been great!

“Revealing Stephanie’s Childhood Abuse” – It was wonderful to see the show bring Betty White onto the canvas for such an emotional storyline, which resulted in huge dynamics between her and her mother!

"Stephanie's Shooting" - A real whodunit, in the truest sense of the word. This story involves one of our fave actresses, and has led to the return of Alley Mills as Pam, Patrick Duffy as Stephen, and Betty White as Ann!

“Ashley Abbott’s Crossover from Y&R to B&B” – There’s a lot of potential to bringing Ashley Abbott to LA and so much the show has yet to tap into!

Worst Storylines:

"The Egg Donor Mix-up" - Just too far-fetched! Never mind how ludicrous it is that Bridget would be overseeing the fertility treatments for her ex and his new wife, but the premise, that the eggs were all labeled "B. Marone" and Bridget asked for the "Marone" eggs (when she meant the donor eggs, which would have been labeled with the donor's name) is just too convoluted to accept. The baby was then born with a rare syndrome, which only the bio-mom's bone marrow could correct - this just pushed this story over the top!

Days of Our Lives

Best Storylines:

“Stefano's return to Salem and finally finding out why the DiMera/Brady Feud started” - I struggled with this because the word vendetta now gets on my nerves. Still, I like seeing the DiMeras and love to hate their evil ways. What can I say?!

“Steve's Mental Hospital Scenes” - Thanks to new head writer Hogan Sheffer and his crew for interjecting humor into what became a painful, recycled "pawn"storyline. Steve cracked us up and gave the show a much needed dose of comedy!

”John Black's Accident And Dying Scenes” - Saying goodbye to the character John Black was one of the saddest events in daytime for many - including myself but I've got to hand it to the writers, the scenes were well written and well done. I cried for a week straight!

Worst Storylines:

“Tinda Lau Island Claire kidnapping storyline” - Words such as long and drawn out and anti-climactic describe this storyline. In addition to featuring new characters that nobody cared about, it took Shawn and Belle away from Salem and their family. That's never a good idea to take characters outside of the norm for too long. I think I speak for fans when I say they would have preferred to see Shelle in Salem Place, rather than in Tinda Lau! Whatever happened to Salem Place?

“Touch The Sky Airline” - Summer storyline with a younger set are usually supposed to be used to reach a younger audience and give them reason to start watching the show while on break from school. Not with this story! Even the younger set didn't care for the go nowhere storyline of Jett/Jeremy/Chelsea/Stephanie and… Rawlings? Just be happy they ditched it when they did.

The Metro Court Hostage Siutation (Soaps.com)
General Hospital

Best Storylines:
“The Metro Court Hostage Situation” - James Craig was downright diabolical and his mind games with Port Charles' residents were riveting.

“The Reunion of Sonny and Connie Falconeri (Kate Howard)” - Her gradual melting back into his arms in combination with his stealth determination to break through her tough exterior was beautiful.

“Luke and Tracy's Love Affair” – A slow and wonderful thing to watch! Although most of us love Luke with Laura, we have found ourselves starting to let go for his sake and enjoy his relationship with Tracy.

Worst Storylines:

“Jake's paternity!” - Although most fans are happy that Jason is finally a father, the way that the show SLOWLY dealt (and continues to deal with)
the subject outweighs the benefits of the story.

“Jax's rape!” It was grueling to watch him beaten and repeatedly raped by madwoman Irina. Then, to make matters worse, the show completely dropped the ball when he returned to Port Charles. They could have at least done some kind of public service by dealing with the emotional fallout of male rape.

”Noah Drake as Eli Love” - This storyline had many great aspects to it, for example we got to see Noah Drake lighten up, rock out and get a little action! We also got to see Anna Devane in a totally different (and fun!) light. The execution of the material was awkward though. The fact that an international rock star looked identical to Dr. Drake was a bit too unbelievable even for soap fans.

Guiding Light

Best Storylines:

“Edmund Returning To Town” - Even if it's been brief, every moment has been a treasure.

“Ending Jeva (Josh-Reva) To Make Way For Jeva (Jeffrey-Reva)” - TPTB finally had the moxie to put the nails in the coffin of the Josh-Reva
debacle that's dragged the show down for years. Zimmer and Cole have better on-screen chemistry too.

“Dinah Getting Shot” - It gave Gina Tognoni a chance to shine and brought back the old excitement of the character.

“Jammy (The Doomed Jonathan-Tammy Pairing)” - Although the love and loathe mail has been about equal, at least it didn't bore people.

Worst Storylines:

“The Coop-Ashlee Romance” - Springfield's most readily recuperated psychopath (which is really saying something) gets dropped into the most boring love story this year (which is also really saying something).

“Keeping Jonathan Alive” - It's tacky and it saps energy from what's actually going on. I know the book sold a lot of copies, but this endless teasing around the character is a bad choice, which may damage the show in the long run.

“The Jeffrey-Olivia Rape Plot” – This should have led to a grand revenge tragedy. Instead, it's been swept under the carpet so that Jeffrey could be recuperated as a romantic hero.

“Josh and Cassie” - Tied with Josh becoming a man of he whose name must not be uttered.

One Life to Live

Best Storylines:

“Jessica/Tess D.I.D” – Turned a prime and proper character into a sassy, take-no-bull woman! The way Jessica dealt with Tess’s indiscretions was amazing and life changing at the same time. While we were sad to see Tess go, through integration, we’re happy to see more and more of her in Jessica each day!

“Tate Harmon/One Pure People” – A controversial storyline but definitely a reality in today’s world! The show should be commended for the way it pulled together numerous ethnic groups to stop such a hateful force that tried to bring them down!

“Cole And Starr’s Fight To Be Together” - His mom was raped by her father but they overcame it all for love! This was more than your fairytale ‘Romeo and Juliet’ love story. Sometimes it takes young love to stop the pain from years full of hurt and regret!

Worst Storylines:

“The Spencer Truman Murder Trial” –This had to be one of the longest drawn-out storylines of all-time! Although there were many possible suspects, by the time we found out Lindsay was the real killer we no longer cared.

“Tommy’s Paternity/Marcie On The Run” – Come on, give the boy back to Todd already! Our sympathy for Marcie went out the window after she managed to elude the law for what seemed like months. Our compassion was then given to Todd – the biological parent!

“Prom Night: The Musical” – Though one day in this ‘musical type setting’ was a pleasant change, after four days of it, we were screaming to be back in Llanview!

Passions

Best Storylines:

“Vincent becoming pregnant” - JER finally hatched the most ludicrous plotline of his career, and likely in the history of soap operas, and I adore him for it.

“Sheridan Doing Drag To Break Into A Prison” - Not only did Sheridan go evil this year, she also displayed more depth, variety and humor than the character has ever hinted at.

“Endora Getting Lessons On Being A Witch From Her Mother”

Worst Storylines:

“The Endless Ethan-Theresa-Gwen Triangle” - What can I say... at least Gwen got some clever comeback lines this year.

“The Jared-Theresa Marriage” – It went nowhere before mercifully vanishing. While it seemed for awhile like Jared might turn sinister and give his cuckolding wife her comeuppance, he simply up and left.

“Vincent’s Affair With His Father And Uncle”

The Young and the Restless

Best Storyline:

“Jill/Katherine/Cane Paternity and Baby Switch” - Put a major twist on such a longtime rivalry between Katherine and Jill! We enjoyed the dynamics between the threesome and the re-writing of history this time actually worked well.

“Drucilla Winters Dies” - Very sad storyline, very shocking and heart wrenching and left Genoa City reeling with emotion! The storyline we felt was well done and although we miss seeing Drucilla on the show, we felt that it was very well written and played out by all.

Worst Storylines:

“Clear Springs: Out From The Ashes” - The storyline had loads of build up but the fans and writers of the recaps felt that nothing major happened.

“Shelia's Return As Phyllis” - Come on, we’ve seen this way too many times! Need we say more?

This was really fun to read and for the soaps I watch (GH and sometimes OLTL ) I agree! Just a note to say the lady who keeps the GH board going does a FANTASTIC job.

Definitely agree with the writer's pick of the Zarf/Zoe transgender storyline for AMC. Jeffrey Carlson should be a "hands down" Emmy winner for his performance as Zarf/Zoe. He had us laughing one minute, and crying the next. An absolutely PHENOMINAL actor!

I hope AMC has the smarts to bring him back before someone else snags him up! He's definitely in a league of his own and one AMC should hang on to!

I agree 100% with the choice of AMC's transgender storyline
as the best of 2007...actually the best on all of daytime..
It was such a heartwarmng story thanks to the sensitive
portrayal of Zoe by the brilliant Jeffrey Carlson.........
he did such an amazing job of making Zoe human and so easy
to love and feel compassion for.........
Daytime Television hasnt seen an actor of this young man's
calibre in many years, if ever and AMC would be wise to ask
him back before another Soap beats them to it and scoops him up................
He was like a 'breath of fresh air' and would be a definite asset to any show lucky enough to hire him......

I could not agree more ~ give Tommy back to Todd !! Marcie has always grated on me anyway, but she has become the most unsympathetic character EVER !! Initially I felt bad for her... but lately all she has done is prove over and over what an unfit mother she is. Her constant screaming and whining in front of of Tommy was unacceptable... but now she's holding him in a diner with a gun and poor Vickie as a hostage? Lock her up in jail and throw away the key please !!!

I am all for the Zarf/Zoe storyline on AMC(I am screaming for an EMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!), since then I have grown extremely weary of the Kendall show.

OneLifetoLive? The Best was Lindsays performance at the trial after being nabbed by the Woman of the Year Awards. Definately Emmy Material.

The worst storyline for me on B&B was the rape, where Brooke magnificantly recovered by finally bedding Ridge...only a couple of weeks later. BOOOOO on B.Bell and this very poorly handled social issue!

Thanks for the Best/Worst! I enjoyed reading this and appreciate the work that went into it!

Grüß,
Outland!
