Olivia defends her relationship with Nat, Alan gives Beth an ultimatum, Beth dumps Coop and Remy and Christina play house.

At home, Olivia becomes livid as she watches Doris' press conference on TV. Nat jumps up, announcing that she has a date with Frank. She abruptly leaves.

Olivia rushes over to Doris' office to confront her. To calm her, Doris tells her that she knows plenty of nice lesbian couples. Olivia repeats that they aren't a couple. Doris tells her to explain it to her daughter. Olivia explains how she and Natalia met and their relationship developed. Nat is the most decent and kind person she has ever known and she has kept her alive. They share a home together and it's warm and decent because of Natalia and what she has made of it. "I wish a man would talk about me the way you talk about her," Doris says before brushing her off.
Natalia and Frank are at Company. She asks him if he caught Doris' press conference. He didn't. Emma's school calls Nat and says that she has gone missing. Frank and Nat run off to search.

They easily find her in the mini mart. Emma tells Natalia that Derek's mother won't let her play with him anymore. Nat tells her that sometimes grown-ups care too much about what other people think. Olivia walks in and joins them. She suggests that they play hooky for the rest of the day and the three of them hurry off.

Nat, Olivia and Emma go to Towers to have ice cream and tease each other. Natalia says it's time for her to get back to her date with Frank. Olivia asks her to take Emma home first. After Nat leaves, Olivia strides across the room to two women who were watching her with Nat. "You have a problem with us ladies?" she challenges.

When Remy walks into Company, Christina tells Remy that they don't have to pretend they are married anymore since she's got a spot a Johns Hopkins and is turning down the scholarship grant. He tells her that she'll have to pay the full tuition. When he whispers it to her, she's shocked. He tells her to take the grant. She runs out.

Remy goes over to Marina's and finds her packing. She explains that she and Mallet are going to the mountains to have lots of sex. Remy offers to housesit for her. He needs to play house with Christina to convince a financial aid officer, Mr. Pierson, that they are married. Christina arrives and Marina walks out. He spins Christina around and tells her his plan. She doesn't like adding to their web of lies. Mr. Pierson arrives and she welcomes him to her 'home'. As he looks around, he notices that none of the photos look like people they are related to. Christina says they don't live there. Remy claims they are subletting. She tells Pierson how dedicated she and her husband are to medicine and to each other. Pierson is impressed and tells them that they have a great chance. After he shakes her hand and leaves, they spin around, sure that they convinced him they were in love. They stare into each other's eyes. As they drink wine, she reminds him that this will go on for five years. He toasts to her.

At Towers, Buzz tells Coop how proud he is of him. He's been talking to people at the reading and they seem to be really touched by his book. Coop's enthusiastic and asks his father if he still thinks he's crazy. Buzz understands his excitement and gives him a hug. They sit and he waits for Beth to call. A woman from Stanford University approaches Coop and asks him to become their next writer in residence. Buzz is thrilled but Coop worries that it's too far away. Buzz reminds him that he already gave up Oxford for a woman and that didn't work out. Coop tells the woman that she will have to come up with something else if he is going to consider her offer.

At the mansion, Alan grabs Beth's arm and confronts her about Coop. He saw them making love at Company. He knows that he's made mistakes and was willing to forgive her, but, after hearing the reading, he's realized that this was more than a fling and she has insulted his love and publicly humiliated him. Handing her a glass, he tells her that she will marry him. She's shocked and explains that, while she may not know what she has with Coop, she wants to find out. She begs Alan to let them just be friends. "You cheated on me with your daughter's ex-boyfriend," he says, and that doesn't sound like friendship to him. Nonetheless, he is sure that they are meant to be together. She refuses. "Then you don't care about him as much as you say you do," he warns. "Didn't you learn anything from Tammy's death?" she asks. He learned to be careful. From now on, she will stay at the mansion and look after their daughter, he demands. He gives her an hour to decide.

Buzz is in Company leafing through Coop's book. "I hear it is going to be quite a page turner," Alan quips as he walks in. As he sits down, Buzz tells him about his ideas for the restaurant. Things turn serious and Buzz asks Alan not to take things out on his son. When he tells him about the job at Stanford, Alan tells him to make sure his son leaves. Then he can have Beth, Coop can have a career and Buzz can have a franchise. Buzz refuses to sell out his son and orders Alan out.

Coop and Beth meet on a park bench, he's glad that they came out in public and is sure they can be together soon. He tells her about the job offer he was just given. She's amazed. He's only willing to go if the university gives her a spot in their law program. "This is a go for us," he says. They walk through the park and he describes California and the life they could have there. She insists that she can't go away with him and that this has to end before it gets worse. It's impossible for her to leave the Spauldings behind. "Life is a lot more complicated than your book," she says. She claims that their whole relationship has been self-indulgent and just a fantasy. "I need a man, not a boy," she adds, saying goodbye. She cries as he turns away. He stops for a moment and stares back before walking off.

When Coop gets back to the boarding house, he rips up his book. Buzz comes out and he tells him what happened. He's sure that Alan forced Beth to push him away. "Alan always wins! Always!" Coop shouts. Buzz tells him that Alan knows everything about the affair. Coop decides that this means this is a long way from being over. He runs off.

"It's done," Beth announces as she walks into Alan's office. She turns away to cry.
