Alan escapes death in a freak accident and has a vision, Rick kidnaps Peyton.

In his room in the boarding house, Alan is on the phone with a business acquaintance and talking himself up. He dresses and sings to himself before leaving for a meeting.

Rafe walks into Company for something to eat. He realizes that he doesn't have any money so Buzz offers to let him work it off by helping him select the winner of the Gus Aitoro scholarship. They go through the list when they hear a thud. Hurrying outside, they find that Alan has tumbled down the stairs. Rafe calls 911 and Alan insists to Buzz that he's really okay. "That's great considering," Buzz comments. Alan says he doesn't need an ambulance. They look up and guess that the roof must have hit him. He should be dead. "But I'm not," Alan realizes, highly disoriented.

Rafe and Buzz take Alan to Cedars. The doctor checks him out and he's fine though lucky to be alive. "If I told you what happened, you wouldn't believe me," Alan says. As he is put into a wheelchair, Rafe promises to look after him.

In her room at The Beacon, Olivia takes some of her pills and starts pulling on her shoes. She tries walking but quickly slumps over on the bed. After passing out for awhile, she wakes up and stares at her reflection in the mirror. She feels her heart.

On Main Street, Frank and Natalia happily bicker about who should pay for Rafe's baseball glove. She thanks him for his help and tells him Gus is smiling at him for helping her out. Olivia calls and tells Natalia that Emma is at a friend's house. She trails off and the phone goes dead. Natalia doesn't know what to make of it. She and Frank walk over to Company and see that part of the roof has collapsed. Frank tries to call his father without luck. He hopes that no one was hurt. She's upset by this and by the strange call that she got from Olivia. Frank tries to assure her that Olivia is just depressed and if she's worried, she should just call her back.

Beth is in the park with Peyton when Rick arrives. He's just been working for 48 hours and wants to take them home with him. Beth just wants Peyton's blankie and tells him they have other plans... with Alan. "He still has a way with the ladies," Rick remarks sardonically. Beth is ready to walk away but Rick apologizes. Beth offers him some quality time with Peyton while she goes to see her mother.

Later, Beth goes searching for Rick. She checks the park and the hospital but there is no sign of him. As she wanders the halls of Cedars, she runs into Buzz who tells her that he's alright. "Rick?" she asks. "No, Alan," he says. Alan is soon wheeled out and Beth fusses over him. He tells her that it was a close call but those only count in elections in Florida. The doctor told him he'd live forever. Beth always thought he had nine lives and offers to walk him out.

Rafe and Buzz bring Alan back to Company. He stares up at the roof and reaches out to it before sitting on the steps. "You're not going to sue me are you?" Buzz asks. Alan can't afford a lawyer, but if he could, he still wouldn't. He offers to help fix it up and starts lifting. Rafe steps in and tells the "old folks" to be careful before he steps in to help. They carry the piece of roof down.

Buzz and Rafe are cleaning up Company. Rafe thinks that his grandfather is acting weird and needs help. Buzz sits him down and they start talking about the scholarships again. Rafe recalls when one of his teachers had a heart attack in the middle of class and how one of the students saved his life. Buzz is impressed and puts that student at the top of the list.

Rick brings the baby to a motel where he checks in under a false name. He tells Peyton that he'll take her far away from Alan to visit his dad and Michelle. The baby begins crying and he tries to stop her without much luck until he destroys her bunny. When he leaves to get a soda, he runs into Frank in the hall. He tells him that he's just making a house call and Frank walks away. Rick sighs and goes back into the room.

Rick returns to the park with Peyton. He gives her back to Beth and confesses that he kidnapped her. "You need to get her away from me," he says quietly. He can't help finally admitting that Alan has won and he's lost. He became consumed with trying to destroy Alan and became him. As a result, Beth turned away from him. Peyton isn't comfortable; she knows that she doesn't belong with him. Being with Peyton helped him realize who he is. He takes out a flag and reminds her that it will be the Bauer barbeque in six weeks and it will also be their anniversary. He's going to try and be a good man again and would like her to think about coming to the party.

Natalia goes over to The Beacon to check on Olivia. When she walks into her room, she finds her sitting on the bathroom floor with her pills spilled everywhere. Natalia assumes she was trying to overdose and starts walking her around the room, threatening to have her stomach pumped. She starts to rant at her for being selfish and reminds her that her daughters need her to live. Olivia insists that she is only sleepy, not suicidal. She orders Natalia to get out, but she won't go without taking the rest of the pills with her. "You're going to stay alive whether you like it or not," she says. Olivia doesn't want a nanny or a nurse or a Natalia. A disoriented Alan suddenly walks in. "Remember in The Wizard of Oz when the house fell on the witch..." he starts, explaining that part of the roof at Company almost killed him. It wasn't luck that saved him, but what it was goes against everything he's ever thought. They're the only two people he can tell this to and he needs them to convince him he's not crazy. While the roof fell, he felt a hand pull on his legs that pulled him out of the way. "Gus?" Natalia asks. This is crazy to Olivia but Alan says that Gus touched his shoulder and talked to him, assuring him that everything was alright. Olivia doubts he would come back to talk to Alan when they rarely had a civil word while he was alive. Alan thinks he has unfinished business but Olivia insists that the last piece of Gus is in her and orders him to get out. After he walks out, Olivia orders Natalia out with a scream. Alone, she stifles her tears.

Alan returns to his room as the phone rings. He looks down at his photo of Gus before taking a walk. He goes to the church but stays outside. Inside the church, Natalia lights a candle and says a prayer.
