Guiding Light: Rumors of the Future.

Thursday, May 07 2009

Since Guiding Light's cancellation was announced on April 1, both the print and online press have been swarming with rumors about whether the series will be picked up by another network. So far, Oxygen, Lifetime and a few other networks have been mentioned but nothing concrete has happened. It's worth recalling that these, and other networks, were also rumored to be the second home for Passions after it was canceled. In that case, it turned out not to be so. The show did, however, end up with a few months of respite when DirecTV stepped in. Since that wasn't much of a commercial success, even given the fact that Passions had a far more desirable market demographic than GL does, many in the industry still expect the series not to be picked up by another network. This doesn't mean that it may not be re-purposed into some other format, online or otherwise, and it doesn't mean that a surprise could occur.

However, Brain T. Cahill, Senior Vice President of TeleNext Media, recently issued this cautious statement to help quell the rumor mill, "We continue to explore all our options to find a new home for Guiding Light. At this point, we are not able to comment or speculate about any potential partnerships. Our conversations are ongoing and, in the interest of keeping them moving forward, we cannot offer any additional perspective. We will certainly communicate broadly if and when a decision is made about the future of the show. We thank all our loyal fans for their continued outpouring of support."

An answer as to whether the series has a future, and what that may consist of, is generally expected within the month. In the meantime, CBS is already pursuing ideas of what will fill the series' time slot, the likely contenders being revamped game shows. Soaps.com will keep you informed of any future developments.

CBS is already pursuing ideas of what will fill the series' time slot~~~~~~~~~~

Well I will not watch whatever it maybe!! CBS should give GL more time. The show is getting so much better, and the fans should matter more.I just hope another network will pick GL up,and I say this will be CBS loss, and another network gain.

Damn that mighty dollar !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still cannot believe that once again one of our soaps is in trouble! Please another game show? Please another reality show? Do we not have enough of these? What is it going to take to keep our soaps on t.v. without the constant threat of being canceled?

I like SndrElkins will not watch whatever they put on. I for am hoping that another network picks up GL and GL becomes the great soap that it once was, and CBS regrets cancelling GL. I still have hopes that GL can be great again and want them to get the chance. This is like family leaving/moving away.

Is nothing sacred anymore? Another reality or talk show? Oh Paleeeeezzzzzz!!!! We need an escape from the present reality of our situation during difficult times. GL fills a need for distrction for over 75 years to many viewers. What will you do with all these ex-GL people going through a greiving process? I do hope you revisit this decision and save what's left of comforting good old television entertainment.

I can't believe that they are cancelling this show. My
mom listened to it on the radio since 1937, and then when
I grew up I watched it on tv, and have always been a loyal
fan. If we get one more game show or reality show I will
throw up. They are so boring, and it is the same thing over
and over. What is wrong with the networks. Reality shows
are awful, don't watch any of them. Let us keep our Guiding Light going, please....

I, like the others will not watch anything else they put in this time slot. I love GL and agree that it is getting better. CBS will hopefully regret their decision and even better-maybe they will listen to the fans. I have no need of another talk show-I don't watch any of them, and I HATE reality shows. Leave the soaps alone!!! I watch Y&R, B&B and GL and GL is by far my fav!!

Does anyone have any idea how to contact CBS to voice our disapproval of canceling Guiding Light? I am so ticked off that they would even consider taking it off that I would like to voice my opinion to CBS. Not that it would do any good, but would make me feel better. Thank you for any info that might help.

first the senior vice presidents' name is Brian,it looks like brain. I have always been a guiding light fan,and will miss very much seeing the show. There are some people who only have local channels like me. Keep Guiding Light on it's regular channel. Taking off GL.is not RIGHT
