Guiding Light's New Look: Beth Chamberlin and fans' Feedback!

Thursday, March 13 2008

Beth Chamberlin (CBS)
On February, the 29th, Guiding Light brought viewers the new look it had been promising for months (which you can read about it here and here). As promised, it is a substantial departure from what everyone's been used to, changing not only the style, but the atmosphere and pacing of the show. Such an abrupt change can take some getting used to and only time will tell how much of the audience of the beleaguered soap will give it the time it needs.

Of course, the changes are something that not only the viewers but the actors have to get used to as well. For a look at their perspective, Soaps.com managed to snag Beth Chamberlin (Beth Raines Bauer) for a few questions which she was kind enough to answer.

Are you excited about the new direction the show is heading in?
Beth: Yes, as an actor it is exciting to be facing a new challenge, a new way of working. But, more importantly, as a lover of Guiding Light, I am thrilled that in changing the look, we are once again reflecting the times that we live in. Guiding Light has a 70 year tradition of being a sort of historical document. This is another way that we are keeping with that tradition.

Do you expect the changes to impact on the way that the stories are told? If so, how?
Beth: Only in the sense that there will be a greater sense of intimacy for the viewer. The stories themselves will continue to follow the lives, secrets and loves of the residents of Springfield.

Has it changed the way you approach your work?
Beth: An actor’s work always needs to adjust to their surroundings. What is too big a choice in one medium may be too small in another. This is just another way we must adjust. I believe the adjustments we make at Guiding Light will continue to evolve in the next couple of months as we, along with the audience, notice what works best.

Soaps.com has also received a barrage of email from viewers about the changes and, honestly, a disproportionate amount of it has been negative so far. Nonetheless, here is a representative sampling of the good, the bad and the middling impressions which viewers have offered us so far.

Mark R. said: I have been watching GL since I was a little boy (probably nearly 40 years) -it's been my favorite! Your intro is depressing... Soap operas ARE for escape and fantasy-NOT REALITY. I am from Syracuse, NY and was excited and anticipating your new look with the SU guys. (I too am a graduate of SU.) I'm afraid this new look is what will push me over the edge and cause me to drop GL after all these years. The intro was bad enough and I stuck through it, but no more. The new look is distracting; way too close with faces (almost dizzying) and the atmosphere and color is more reality, NOT soap opera. It defeats the whole illusion and warmth you get from watching soap operas. That look is comforting and synonymous with soaps. I watch Reality TV for other reasons but I want the soap opera look for soaps. Big mistake. I'll watch ATWT and will drop GL from here on in. I am sure it is too late for you to change it now. I will not watch this.

Melody L. said: Hi, I have watched Guiding Light for about 34 years and this new look is good and bad. The outdoor scenes are great, but the lighting inside is too dark and the sound echoes. Also, there are too many unflattering camera angles from below eyeline. It makes these beautiful people look older, heavier, and is very distracting. But it is a great idea to incorporate the outside views, but it just needs a little fine tuning.

Sharon D. said: I have never written to a show before. I can't stand the new camera angles and [the cameras] getting 2 inches from their faces. I've been watching Guiding Light since I was a young person and I'm now fast forwarding through because it makes me too frustrated to see the actors so close. Friday's episode was totally all new camera stuff. I couldn't watch one bit of it. If this continues, you will lose a viewer. I feel myself getting very tense at the closeness of the picture. I can't believe that the majority of viewers think that this is better than the old way of doing things. I don't enjoy seeing half faces or looking at them as though I was right on top of them. Sorry that the powers that be think this is such a great innovative wonderful way to use a camera.

Margaret G. said: I just wanted to let you know that I do not like the new format. Too many face closeups and the warmth and coziness is gone for me. I have been watching for over 50 years and this is the first time that I do not tune in to the show... Maybe I'll get used to it, but so far NO.

Laura D. said: Hi, I have been watching GL since I was born. I watched it while my mom did hook rugs in the 70's, I scheduled my classes around it in college, and now I tape it everyday on my DVR and love it; however, I think I absolutely can't stand the new look. It looks low budget and the people do not look very good. Please tell me this is temporary. I miss my nice fake world of Springfield.

Lisa W. said: I just want to say how good Guiding Light has been since its doing the live scenes. I mean with the outdoor scenes. It makes it more like real life

Carole O. said: I'm liking GL's new look very much. I would like to know who sings the opening theme song. I find myself humming it threw out the day.

Soaps.com would like to extend our thanks again to Beth Chamberlin and to all the fans who have written in to offer their thoughts on the new direction of this historic show.

i personally don't like the new GL. it is too real. the camera angles are horrible and it's just too real. i really hope the show goes back to the way it was but it really isn't the "soapy" way it should be.

I have watched G/L for many many years and I, personally, cannot stand the new reality look. I don't particularly like looking at a face so close that I can count the eyelashes on an actor. (A little dramatic there, but I think you get the idea). I only hope G/L goes back to the original way of filming, I get slightly dizzy watching the show when the cameras are bouncing around. Please go back to your original G/L.

I haven't been watching for long. less than a year. My grandma kept telling me everything that was going on and I decided to start watching. After a few questions to my grandma about some of the back log I was hooked. I love the new look. You could cut back on the close ups. but other than that I love it.

thanks

I know we get better at what we do as time go by, but I will be happy when the cameras become more stable. I somehow thought within 70 years, GL could have bought a set up such as Desparate Housewives, a community of houses and streets, which from my understanding has been used for Knotts Landing, Leave it to Beavers, etc. Through it all, I am still a GL fan...

It has been years since I watched GL but I just started a job working out of my home and switched GL on the other day. I thought I was watching an amature video or home movie. I hope the shows turns back to its normal format.

I never write in to television shows regarding my opinion, but since I am at home now, and cannot stomach watching what used to be my favorite daytime show since childhood, I figured I post a cry of grief on line in hopes that it will be heard.

They have killed GL by eliminating all of the production values on the show. They should be ashamed--horrible lighting, canned audio (sounds like they're using a camera mike), poor to non-existent shot composition...The oldest day time show now looks like a pitifully produced and shot student film! It looks like they are shooting with the digital camera that my husband bought from Circuit City 10 years ago. Seriously, I've seen student films shot on relatively cheap (i.e. non-professional) cameras come out looking so much better. You couldn't enter the 'new' GL in a student film contest because the production values are not up to par with what our average college student is doing.

As far as realism is concerned, no one wants realism from a Soap Opera! That's what Reality TV is for, which by the way, looks much better! I will never understand how Survivor Man, a show about a guy in the middle of the woods by himself with 8 cameras looks better than GL! Did they hire high schoolers to take over production, making them provide their own cameras to get the job?

Well, now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'm off to watch ATWT...at least their producers care about the quality of their production.

So I dont know about everybody else but I find the camera close ups now that show every pimple, line, wrinkle, nose hair, and snot in each individual actors nose to be awful and disgusting. Some of the outdoor scenes are quite enjoyable but uh, why dont you folks consider hiring some PROFESSIONAL camera people again and maybe asking them to lay off the snot shots??!! People dont generally watch soap operas so life will seem more "real" to them. People generally watch soap operas because their own life is more "real" than they can stand and are looking for an escape into a world where people dont have to work more than one day a week to be rich and you can shoot the people you dont like and GET AWAY with it. You can steal your sisters husband and she will still speak to you and your kids well, in soap land they raise themselves, send themselves off to boarding school and dont come back EVER until they are grown. I wake up every morning to a life that is "real" enough for me-----when I turn on my TV I want ridiculous drama and unrealistic fantasy. After being a loyal viewer for over 30 years I just dont think I can stand this much longer unless some changes are made. Have the powers that be at GL not noticed they are the lowest rated soap on TV?? Do they not care that in trying to get a "younger"audience they are destroying what used to be a wonderful show. Apparently, not

I don't mind the new look of the sets, and I love the outside stuff. But I don't like the close-ups or the way voices echo, and sometimes you can't hear what they're saying at all. Some fine tuning of the new format would be great, but on the other hand, going back to the old sets plus also using some outdoor stuff, like As the World Turns does, would be good too. But, either way, they've lost me as a viewer with the storylines; I hadn't been watching for a few months until Tom Pelphrey came back, then I stopped again when he left. If Grant Aleksander returns, I'll come back again. Oh, and I like the video of the new intro, but not the song.

I forgot to mention that when I stopped watching Guiding Light, I'd been a viewer for 28 years. It was the very first soap I ever watched. It made me sad to stop, but I couldn't take the bad sets, and the bad story lines, any more. It's such a sad waste of MANY very talented actors, like Kim Zimmer, Tom Pelphry, Beth Ehlers, Ricky Paull Goldin, Bradley Cole, Justin Deas, Gina Tognoni, Marcy Rylan, Jordan Clarke, Rob Bogue....I mean, look at that stellar cast!! They're doing the best they can what they're given, but it wasn't enough to keep me. I thought the new sets and opening would help, but the story lines are still bad, as far as I'm concerned, and unless Tom Pelphrey or Grant Aleksander return, or the story lines improve, I won't be back.

Hi. This is Charlene04@bellsouth.net. I have been watching your program for many years. I even now record it everyday and even watch it on line when my local cable is having specials so I can watch it. The reality of the scenes inside are way too close for me. The cameras are too close to faces. Please tell the cameramen/women to back away off of the faces and give the inside some more viewing angels. Let them look like a real room that the actors are in. If it is going to look like a reality show then let it look like one. Too amateurish!I would like to see more of the real rooms as in the old soap opera. Why do you also now have an actor or actess in one scene and then flip them to another location within the same section of viewing before commerals? It's like the program was sliced on the tape during recording time. I do enjoy the outside scenes. I know that this is new and it may take several tapings to get the cameras focus just right for viewing, but how long will it take. Some people like myself may get to fustrated and stop watching the program.
