What's Going On With Guiding Light's Natalia and Olivia?

Friday, January 09 2009

For some time now, rumors have been circulating that Natalia (Jessica Leccia) and Olivia (Crystal Chappell) are embarking on a ‘different’ sort of relationship for Springfield. Initially, many insiders suggested that they would become a romantic pairing, making them Guiding Light’s first lesbian couple. These suggestions have been contradicted by people at the show, who have insisted that the two women merely have a unique relationship. So far, both characters have been gradually changing and seem to come closer day by day. This was even noticed by Olivia’s daughter, Emma, who wrote a school report called “My Two Mommies” to highlight her family situation. You can read the recap of that episode here, and watch a clip of their scenes below.

Do you have any other thoughts on this story? Are they just friends, is there a romantic subtext? Let Soaps.com know what you think in the comments section below.

I haven't been watching consistently but I thought they were already a couple.

I never believe it when people say they would stop watching over something like this. I have been watching GL for years and I will continue to do so.

Why on earth would people stop watching a soap, because of a gay storyline? It's 2009, Homosexuality is out of the closet, hopefully. I cant stand GH most times and AMC but since I'm watching them over 35 years, I doubt any storyline would make me stop.

Olivia and Natalia make a beautiful couple and should be allowed to explore a romantic relationship. The performances by Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia are superb. They have great chemistry and should be allowed to continue toward a romantic relationship.
There is a lot of avid support for this relationship being romantic!

Though I try to stay positive hoping for a romantic relationship between Olivia and Natalia, I also am insulted and angered that their romantic relationship even has to be an issue.

In the 1970's, there was controversy about whether to have African-Americans represented on the soap operas. But, the shows forged ahead anyway and allowed them on the soaps. Life went on.

I have watched Guiding Light for close to 40 years and, as a loyal viewer and ad-watcher, I would like to see people of my sexual orientation represented on this soap; at least just this once.

This story is beautiful and has excited people of all orientations. Let it develop. Stop making us fight and beg to have it develop. Guiding Light, represent the modern world in all its diversity and maybe then the show will thrive!

I feel that they should be a couple, for they are so good for each other and Emma, she loves them both. they are very mature women, and I feel that their relationship will be diffent, more caring and more sensitive then most of the soaps.keep it going.,guiding light.,they don't need a man involved to mess up this relationship.

I love the Olivia/Natalia storyline, its made Olivia a sweeter character and given two wonderful actresses an outlet to shine. If GL is going to put them together, awesome! But how it is right now is beautiful, they ARE the most normal family in town. The way that Emma cares for them both...even she can see that they have a family that works and no matter the reasons and whatnot it is amazing to see. Please keep this storyline up!! And stop trying to force Frank with Natalia...I love Frank, but please stop trying to downplay Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia's undeniable chemistry!

So true Otalia4ever. I love the interaction between these so very different characters and how they have bonded. However, people do not "become" gay. They either are or they aren't. To force a sexual relationship between these two would be wrong on so many levels given their history. While one of them could have been "in denial" all these years, it is unlikely both of them were. Let them stay close friends who need each other right now.

They would not be forcing anything. this is the most organic, natural, layered romance I have seen play out on a soap in a very long time. Also, neither would be changing their orientation or will have been denying anything. They are simply two people falling in love regardless of gender and may both go back to men if they ever break up. It is about the person...this is not a story about being gay, it's a story about falling in love.

It's not that people would stop watching because of a "gay storyline." It's because of their background history of dating and marrying MEN. They are FRIENDS. And that's all I really see. To suddenly make them lesbian would be kind of abrupt and awkward. I won't stop watching the show if they become a couple though.
