Blogging From The Beacon.

Thoughts on the week of September 14-18.

This is my final blog for Guiding Light . It's been an extremely sad few days since the show ended. There will be something very strange about not sitting down at my desk to furiously type the daily recap as I watch the show each day. To those who have read my recaps and thoughts over the past three years, I want to send a humble thank you. The... » Read More

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 2000s - The End.

Friday, September 18 2009

With the turn of the century, Guiding Light split away from centering itself in Springfield and substantially changed the focus of the entire series. The first half of the decade also saw the show go through many... » Read More

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 1990s.

Thursday, September 17 2009

The 1990s opened with Reva killing herself and Guiding Light swiftly changed style. The first half of the decade marked a return to more realistic and slightly more subdued storytelling, going out of its way to avoid the tendencies which marked the years of Pamela Long and Reva. With Roger Thorpe back in the fold, the series concentrated more on the Spaulding and Cooper families, expanding both of them again, and even bringing Meta Bauer back... » Read More

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 1980s.

Wednesday, September 16 2009

In the 1980s, Guiding Light underwent more major changes, though, strategically, the shifts were largely the same. The Dobsons left as head writers and Douglas Marland was brought in. The focus jumped again to introducing the younger characters on the show, displacing many of the more established ones, and creating more complex plots. Marland introduced the Chamberlain and the Lewis families among others.

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 1970s.

Tuesday, September 15 2009

The 1970s saw some major changes for Guiding Light , and for soaps in general. The demands of advertisers made it necessary to focus more on younger characters and competition with the many new soaps springing up forced them to be sexier and more shocking than before. That didn't mean that the series lost its heart. The Bauers continued to provide a balance and Bert returned to focus for a few years. To keep up with demand, the show expanded to... » Read More

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 1960s.

Monday, September 14 2009

With Agnes Nixon at the helm for the first half of the decade, Guiding Light in the 1960s became more explicitly socially conscious, allowing even more room for topical issues while integrated advertisements became less explicit. The second half of the decade saw former actors from the show taking over as writers and the brief return of Irna Phillips. Over the course of the decade, the show would leap from 15 minutes to a full half hour (in... » Read More

Blogging From The Beacon.

Thoughts on the week of September 7-11.

The abbreviated three day week was nicely divided into a few symbolic acts, which is a wise way to condense a lot into a little. There was the feeling that things were being wrapped up speedily. It's not so much that things are rushed, but that they are simplified. At times there is a certain nearly poetic beauty about doing it this way, but other... » Read More

Guiding Light on 60 Minutes. (Updated)

Monday, September 14 2009

Original Article: June 12

Since the Guiding Light 's cancellation was announced, plenty of fans have been saddened by how little media attention the event has received. Finally, it looks like someone, at CBS no less, will be giving the show a little more of the honor it deserves.

Guiding Light: From The Beginning - The 1950s.

Friday, September 11 2009

In the 1950's, Guiding Light moved to TV while still remaining on the radio. For the first half of the decade, actors would shoot for TV in the morning before recording for radio in the afternoon. In 1952, the first episodes aired on CBS and ran only fifteen minutes. Control of the series was passed from Phillips to Agnes Dixon. Over the course of the decade, many of the show's staple families would become firmly established. This was... » Read More

Guiding Light: From The Beginning.

Thursday, September 10 2009

In light of the end drawing near, here's a little glance back at the beginning. Guiding Light first aired on radio on January 25, 1937 and ran until June 29, 1956. It made the leap to TV in 1952. The kernel of the series came to writer Irna Phillips from her own experiences growing up in Illinois. After giving birth to a stillborn child, she found solace in the radio broadcasts of church services and sought to create a new kind of space for... » Read More

Thoughts on the week of August 31-September 4.

We're now into the final two weeks of the show. For past few weeks, however, things have been rapidly bustling along. I keep wondering whether I would experience it differently if I didn't know it was ending. More than anything, the recent weeks have reminded me of the episodes from the writer's strike last year. Blogging From The Beacon.

Thoughts on the week of August 24-28.

We're down to the final three weeks of the show and things have become very eventful. Maybe I'm alone in feeling this, but the fact that the show is drawing to a close seems to drain some of the dramatic tension out of things as they unfold. There was a lot of charm and tenderness on the show this past week, but there was also the sense that things were... » Read More
