The Alex and Alan for a new Millennium.

Tuesday, May 06 2008

At Company, Rafe helps his grandfather out on his laptop. He's impressed that he seems ready to get back to work. "I'm ready to break the door down," Alan smiles. He goes over to the park and runs into Dinah. "You look like you're ready to huff and puff and blow the house down," she smirks. "Only if you're in it," he shoots back, warning her that she is about to make a fool of herself in front of some important people. Meanwhile, Rafe asks his mother why they are still in Springfield after Gus is gone and he's broken up with Daisy. She takes him over to Cedars for a checkup. He tells her that he misses Chicago. Remy walks by, looking for Ava. Lillian explains that she was there earlier to see Olivia. Hearing this, Natalia starts to worry but Lillian insists that Olivia will be okay.

Natalia checks in on Olivia. "Did you bring fresh towels?" she jokes. She assures Natalia that she's "taking care of him". Out in the corridor, Lillian is laughing with Alan when Rafe walks over. Alan tells his grandson that he's been having a busy day and he thought a visit with him would cheer him up. Rafe smiles. They joke around until Natalia returns. Alan tells her that she's raised a smart young man. She comments that he seems to be doing better and tells him to hold onto what he has instead of trying to get back what he's lost. He invites them over to Company and promises to cook them lunch. As they walk off, he goes in to check on Olivia. She tells Alan that everything sucks. She wishes she could be cheery for her daughters but, most of the time, she just wants to die. He knows the feeling; sometimes things are too much to take. He's not going to tell her any cheerful parables, which is good because she's got enough of those from everyone else, but once upon a time they both thought that they could rule the world... he still wants that. "Why?" she asks. He holds her hand for a moment and then walks out. He goes over to Company and starts to cook for Rafe and Natalia. She turns to her son and tells him they are staying in town because they have family there: Alan, Zach and Jude are all they have left of Gus.

It's a Long Walk Back From Death.

Natalia accidentally runs into Daisy with her laundry cart. Daisy asks her how Rafe is doing. "He's not doing so good," Natalia says. Daisy insists that she wasn't all bad for Rafe; they had good plans. Natalia laughs. Gus said the same thing to her father when they were in high school. As she gets in the elevator, she runs into Dinah who tells her how sorry she is about what happened to Gus. Natalia goes home to Rafe and gives him an ice pack for his broken hand. She tells him he needs to find something to do, like going to see Daisy. He's baffled by this suggestion. She wants to learn to trust the man she's raised, she explains.

As Dinah takes a jog, she spots Daisy sitting by the side of the road. She sits down with her and they talk about boy troubles. Dinah offers her some advice. When Daisy returns home to do her homework, Rafe comes to the door. Although she's surprised to see him, she lets him in. "What are you doing here?" she asks. He kisses her. She becomes uncomfortable. They go over to Company to talk. Natalia spots them but stays away. After talking through the afternoon, Daisy concludes that it will never work between them. "I'm sorry," he says. She takes his hand, telling him that this is no one's fault. She just wants him to be okay. "I loved you," he says. "I loved you too," she admits. They kiss as tears fill their eyes. They walk off in opposite directions.

I Have my Moments.

At the station, Olivia asks Jeffrey to protect Gus' son from prosecution. There's not much he can do since Rafe assaulted someone in court. Olivia offers to pay his bail. Meanwhile, Frank tells Natalia that the arresting officer is a friend of his so he'll do what he can. Natalia hugs him in thanks. When Frank leaves, she tells her son that blaming someone else doesn't work. Meanwhile, Frank follows Olivia down to the water. He tells her that it's nice she wants to help Rafe. "I have my moments," she says. She's nothing like Natalia though; she wanted to do what Rafe did. She returns to Cross Creek where Jeffrey waits for her. He didn't tell her about the hearing because he knew that she would go and it wouldn't do any good.

I Feel Like I'm Cheating on Gus.

At the motel, Rafe is messing with the oven and trying to get it to work. Natalia tells him to calm down. He wishes they had their house back. "Now it's Olivia's," she smirks. She leaves and buys a hot plate and other things before running into Frank on the street. Seeing how much she will have to drag back on the bus, he insists that she let him give her a ride. After driving her home, he helps unpack her things and tries to say something nice about the dump she lives in. He sits in a chair and it breaks. They laugh and she tells him about the house she had. Frank tells her she will have it again. He asks her to move into the boarding house and let Rafe work at Company. She thanks him but insists that they'll be fine.

Daisy tries calling Rafe with no luck. She soon finds him at CO2 having lunch with a cheerleader. She accuses him of trying to date some nice Catholic girl his parents would approve of. "I bet she's never even been pregnant," she snipes before walking off. Rafe returns home and finds his mother dressed up and ready for another job interview. She tries to cook him something but the fuse breaks. She promises him that they won't be living like this anymore and tells him to get ready for some changes.

Left alone at Towers, Olivia tells a strange man at the bar all about Gus. He doesn't pay attention. Natalia walks by and he recognizes her from Chicago. After he hurries away, Natalia returns and asks Olivia why she's there. Olivia expects a lecture but Natalia's happy to see her moving around. "I can't tell you how to live. I just want you to live," she says. Later, Jeffrey takes Olivia back to Cross Creek. She still hasn't signed the divorce papers but does so right away, even though she thought about making if difficult just to spite Reva. Meanwhile, Natalia and Rafe walk into Company and ask Frank if the rooms are still available. He tells her that they are. Rafe reminds her that Alan still lives there and he's family. Frank tells them he thinks they'll like it there and smiles. As they go up, Frank calls Buzz to tell him that he's given up his room so that Rafe and Natalia will have somewhere to stay.

I Thought You'd Given up.

Wednesday, April 23 2008

In his room at the boarding house, Alan tries setting up new deals. It's not going well. Rafe walks in and teases his grandfather a little. He takes out the laptop that Alan bought him and sets it up for him, offering to help him out. He asks his grandfather if he really thinks he can get it all back. Alan is sure that he can; he doesn't just want to be rich though, he wants to do something bigger. Rafe helps him out for awhile until Beth arrives. Alan's face lights up when he sees her. Rafe steps out and Beth explains that she's been thinking about how to do the right thing. "I want to be with you Alan," she says. "No... not now. I have dreamed of the day that you would tell me those words, but now is not the time," he says, much to her shock. Right now he is just a loser, but someday he will be back and able to give her and Peyton the love they deserve, he explains. She just wants them to be together; she doesn't care when or where. It matters to him though. His experiences lately have changed him and he's never been more motivated than ever before in his life. He asks her to leave and then goes back to work.

Beth runs into Rafe outside of Company and they talk about what Alan must be going through. Meanwhile, Alan tracks Dinah down on Main Street and offers her a truce that would be beneficial for both of them. He needs something from her though. "You're kidding?" she asks. "If you work with me, you won't be sorry," he offers. She shrugs and they talk it over before she goes to the beauty salon where she runs into Beth. She tells her that she refused to make a deal with Alan and explains that he offered her a truce to get the kids back into the house. Beth is bewildered but Dinah says it's not going to happen and tells her to stop using Alan to get what she wants. Elsewhere, Alan takes Rafe out for a shoeshine and tells him how glad he is that he's finally out of sneakers. Alan gets a business call and this time he's prepared. It goes well and he smiles at his grandson.
