It's a Spider's Web

Thursday, July 19 2007

Gus is helping to move Rafe and Natalia into the Spaulding mansion. The place is more like a museum than a home. Lizzie arrives to half-heartedly welcome them. 'Don't worry...I don't live here anymore,' she says. The butler arrives to hand Rafe the keys to his new car. His jaw drops but Natalia seems concerned. A gift that size comes with 'ropes attached,' she says. The butler then hands Natalia the keys to an SUV in her favorite color. Rafe thinks that she deserves it. Lizzie tells them to enjoy the ride: 'My grandad collects families,' she warns them before walking out. Gus tells his son that he can't run out and jump into the car. He doesn't even have a license yet. First they have to get that and then they can get him a safe car. Rafe isn't going to give it up and doesn't want his mother to give hers up either. Gus warns him that Alan is not what he seems. He has tried to be a good father, Gus admits, but in the end, 'this isn't really a house, it's a spider's web.'

Back at her apartment, Natalia is finishing her packing. Remy continues trying to talk her out of it. She doesn't need warnings about Alan and Rafe needs some family, she insists. Remy is sure that she is really just moving in to get closer to Gus. Natalia shakes her head, but before she can reply, Harley walks in. Natalia assumes that she has come to accuse her of trying to steal Gus but Harley insists that she is only there to help. Remy walks off and Natalia tells Harley that she doesn't need any help. Harley asserts that her marriage to Gus has never been stronger and she never wonders about what things could be like with Dylan.

Left alone, Rafe picks up one of Alan's cigars and wanders around before playing with a vase. When Daisy walks in and surprises him, he drops it onto the floor and it smashes. He's not happy to see her and starts to panic as he picks up the pieces. She thinks that he just blew her off before to please his mother, but he says that things are just 'weird' between them now that they're step brother and sister. After observing their parents for the last few days though, Daisy doesn't think they'll be step-siblings for much longer. 'Everybody's perfect little marriage won't be perfect for much longer,' she says as Lizzie look in. She leaves and meets with Remy at CO2. She tells him that her grandfather is looking for a new family. He asks her to hire him so that he can work as her spy and keep an eye on Natalia at the same time. Meanwhile, Rafe and Daisy have moved onto the couch and start to kiss before Natalia walks in. She tells Daisy to leave before security notices her. After sending Rafe off, she reminds Natalia that if it wasn't for her, she wouldn't have any of what she's gotten since she came to Springfield. She owes her, but as long as she allows her quality time with Rafe, she can have quality time with Gus.

Alan Knows Best

Monday, July 16 2007

At Natalia's, Gus tells her that she and Rafe are just as much a part fo his life as Harley. He won't let them go, he just needs time to work this out: He won't give up. Looking out the window, she waves to the patrol car he has watching her apartment. She wonders if his wife knows how much extra attention he's been throwing her way: This really isn't appropriate. 'You can't have it both ways,' she insists. 'You can try to, but you can't have both of us,' she tells him as he walks out. Once he's gone, Alan arrives and tells her that they are testing a new insulin pump at the university hospital. He's pulled some strings and got Rafe into the tests. Excited to hear this, she says that she would do anything for Rafael. Alan tells her that his mother and cousin are diabetic and asks for more details about Rafe's case. He promises her that from now on, his grandson will only see the best doctors. He wants her to consider him his friend and also consider an offer he has for her.

Gus returns home to find Harley baking. He tells her that he went to see Natalia and she wants to take off with his son. He hopes that he talked her out of it. She still wants to go with her condo idea, but Gus doesn't think that will fly. She then, sarcastically, offers to renovate the third floor and put alarms and bars on all the doors. 'Kind of hopeless,' Gus sadly says before spotting Alan's cigar splayed on a plate. She tells him Alan's offer and that she made it clear that no one would agree to it. She admits that, for one second, it actually sounded like a good idea, but living with Alan would be bad for anyone. Gus stays relatively silent, but he's glad to hear that Harley went out of her way to protect he and his son. Later, Alan returns and Gus flatly tells him that he doesn't want Rafe living with him. That's a shame, Alan says, because he wanted Gus' blessing. He doesn't need it though. 'I've got hers,' he says as Natalia appears beside him. Gus resents the fact that Alan has gone behind his back to do this. As they all argue, Natalia stops them. She knows who Alan is and what he is capable of, but she doesn't care about that: This is about what's best for her son. This is the only way to solve all of their problems. Alan ushers her away to collect Rafe.

See You Soon or Pack Your Bags

Friday, July 13 2007

At Cedars, Gus walks in to check on his son. Rafe is sleeping but Natalia is awake and standing by his bedside. She tells him that their son is usually better at taking care of himself. A doctor comes in and informs them that Rafe is stable and can go home later. A delivery arrives for Rafe. As he wakes, he opens it, happy to see an MP3 player inside. A smiling Alan appears in the doorway with a laptop to complete the package. Rafe can barely believe it and Gus suggests that his father should have checked with Natalia first. Alan insists that this is just a gift to his grandson. Gus drags his dad out into the corridor and tells him that Rafe is not for sale. Alan can't help it, he likes the boy. Gus thinks that he may be trying to compensate for losing Beth and the baby, but Alan insists that he just thinks his grandson deserves better than he's had. 'Not everything I do is toxic,' Alan protests. Natalia comes out and worries that it will be impossible to keep Daisy and Rafe apart now. Gus is sure that things will be fine now that Daisy is with Dylan. As he walks away, Alan tells Natalia that she needs to take Rafe home with her. Leaving him with Harley will just drive the boy out of town. When she returns to her son's side, she tells him that his collapse is not like him; he's usually more careful. She thinks that he's becoming too distracted: He needs to stay away from Daisy. She doesn't want to see him throw his life away on someone who has just drifted into his life.

Going back to her apartment, Natalia begins to pack when Remy walks in. She tells him that she is taking Rafe back to Chicago. He thinks that's a great idea. They should get while the getting is good. He promises to visit her, gives her a kiss and walks out. Gus soon arrives and tries to talk her out of leaving. He promises her that they can make this work. This is not Harley's choice, Rafe is his son. 'You and Rafe are just as much a part of my life as Harley is,' he tells her.

New Perspective

Wednesday, July 11 2007

Harley arrives at home with an armload of 'guy movies' for Gus to watch with his son. She wonders if he's having second thoughts about keeping the kids apart. He's sure that if they were kids, their parents couldn't keep them apart. She smiles. Only a few feet away, Rafe chats with Daisy through his laptop while she sits in Dylan's room at The Beacon. Rafe is clearly not interested in watching anything with Gus and walks off to his room. Harley wishes that she had been Gus' first love, she says as she nestles with him on the couch. 'I saved the best for last,' he says hugging her. Meanwhile, Rafe has already snuck out of his room. Moments later, Daisy does the same. Dylan rushes over to Gus and Harley's with the news. They soon realize that Rafe has vanished too. They call Alan, Buzz and Natalia to break the news. Everyone meets together in the kitchen and exchanges blame until Frank arrives to say that they've been spotted heading to a hotel. Alan rants at Harley and threatens to bring in his security team to search. Natalia is sure that she can find her son; he will not run from her.

Gus and Natalia
Outside, Gus and Natalia try to piece together where the kids could have gotten to. He promises her that they will get their son home safe. She embraces him and they rush around town. He tells her that she looks very nice and she downplays his compliments while they return to her apartment to search. Gus tells her to stay there and wait in case the kids come by. She hugs him again until Remy walks in. They tell him what happened and he eagerly offers to help. Gus seems put off by this but he can't say no. He and Remy walk out and Gus soon starts challenging him about Natalia. On Main Street, Remy runs into his bookie. When the thuggish man demands the money that he's owed, Gus tries to tell him that Remy is working for him undercover. The bookie leaves with a threat and Gus swats Remy for getting into something so stupid. He wonders what would have happened if Natalia had been there instead of him. Remy tells him to do what he knows how to do: Walk away. He is sure that Gus is just angry because he can be with Natalia while Gus can't. Before Gus can rise to this, he gets a call: The kids have been found.

Alan and Natalia
Left alone, Alan comes knocking at Natalia's door, eager for news. He offers her help. Seeing that he's in a tuxedo, she tells him that he should go wherever he was going. He was going to a charity event; he always does his best for children, he tells her. Sitting down, he asks her why she hasn't returned his phone calls. She doesn't know. She's heard a lot about him, but doesn't believe it all. Rafe likes him anyway. Alan is happy to hear that; however, like his grandson, he can also be an infuriating man. His butler calls to say that the kids may have been seen on the grounds. He and Natalia rush over to the mansion but the kids are nowhere to be found. As she admires the house and he gives her a drink, he tells her that the last few days have been rough for him. She's heard all of the gossip. Alan promises her that he will make sure her son comes home to her; Rafe was good to him on a hard day. Natalia is unsure of how to feel about all of this. When Alan offers her keys to the house, he notices that the lake house keys are gone. Suddenly, Daisy calls in a panic. Alan figures out that they are in the lake house and they rush down.
