You're Nothing Like him

Monday, April 14 2008

Olivia gets out of her hospital bed and, picking up a stethoscope, starts listening to her heart beat. Ava arrives to check on her mother. They realize that they've forgotten to pick up Emma. They call the school to check and discover that Rafe picked her up and brought her home. They track him down in the park and ask him why he did this. He didn't think they would have the time. She tells him to go find his mother. Later, Olivia returns to her room at The Beacon where she stares at a photo of Gus before collapsing in the hallway, sick. Natalia finds her there and helps her up and back into her room. Olivia tries to send her away, but Natalia bothers her about not taking her pills. Mel arrives and suggests that Olivia should talk to Rick about his experiences with heart surgery. Olivia's not interested. Mel starts to explain that she is the executor of Gus' will and tells Natalia that the house Gus bought is in her name. Natalia thinks she should sell it because she can't afford the mortgage payments. Olivia offers to pay for that as a thank you to Gus. "You would do that? For me and Rafe?" Natalia asks, moved. Olivia is silent. Mel becomes uncomfortable and walks out. Olivia coldly tells Natalia that she's buying the house for herself. The house was the last thing Gus bought so she wants it for herself. "I wish I'd left you on the floor," Natalia says, walking out.

I Made it up.

Reva stops Rafe in the corridor at Cedars and tells him that Gus was a generous guy to donate his heart to Olivia. "Go to hell," he says, walking away. When he arrives at The Beacon, he starts to tear it apart until Remy grabs him and drags him upstairs to Natalia. She asks him why he's doing this. He's angry that Olivia and her family are getting everything while they get nothing. She tells him to stop, but he only walks away. Remy offers to help. "What do you know about parenting?" she asks. "Nothing, but I know a lot about being angry," he says.

Natalia goes to Company to order some soup for her son. Dinah walks up to her and pays her respects. Natalia thanks her for actually saying that Gus was her husband. She tried to move on, after he left her, she admits, but there was nobody else for her. Dinah offers to pay for her meal, but Natalia thanks her and turns her down. Dinah returns to her new home and gets on the phone. Mallet is announced so she sends Hilda off to fetch him a steak. Mallet walks in, announcing that he is there on official business: He's searching for Phillip. She tells him not to go looking for him; no one who does comes out clean, she warns. He's surprised by how upset she is, but she lets him look around the house as long as he keeps her posted on what he finds.

Jeffrey runs into Natalia at Company. Bringing up Olivia, he says, "I can't imagine what either of you are going through, but I can't help but think you could help each other." She doesn't think so. Meanwhile, Rafe stands by Olivia's side. She realizes he's there and tells him it's rude to stare. "I don't know what my dad saw in you. You're a waste," he says. She tells him he needs to know what Gus said before he died. All that he could talk about was his son, how proud he was of him and how much faith he had that he would be a decent man. Natalia has been listening in and stops her son as he walks out of the room. He tells her that he's going back to school and walks out. She walks into Olivia's room and thanks her for what she said to her son. "I made it up," Olivia confesses. She has kids too and didn't want him to suffer. Natalia doesn't know if she's angry or floored that she was just so good to him. Olivia says she was just trying to get rid of him.

I Didn't ask for This.

Natalia finds her son sitting outside of their house. He wonders what Gus would want him to do. She says he'd want him to be happy. He informs her that he just broke up with Daisy; he needs to take the time to look after her. Natalia says that he should be living his own life, not looking after her, and pulls him up. Daisy tries calling him, leaving a message, telling him that Gus was loved. Meanwhile, Natalia and Rafe begin to move into the house, setting a welcome mat at the front door.

Natalia arrives at the wake with her son. Frank offers to get her something. She thanks him for being nice but leaves to take a walk. She goes to the church and wonders what she is supposed to pray for now. Later, she goes to Cedars to visit Olivia. Natalia doesn't know why she's there. Olivia is sure that she is there because she hates her for taking Gus' heart. She tells her that she should have said no. "I didn't ask for this," Olivia insists. "Of course you did," Natalia accuses, reminding her that she prayed for a heart. Olivia thinks this is all a sick joke. "I hate you," Natalia says. "I lost my second chance and you got yours," she continues. "You have what's left of him so you're not going anywhere," she vows. Olivia just wants her to go away, but Natalia insists that she can't.

One Family Out of Separate Lives.

Harley meets Natalia at her new house. Natalia admits that she hasn't been able to unpack or even to sleep in the bedroom. Everywhere she looks, she sees Gus. Harley asks her if she wants a funeral. Natalia doesn't want to think about it. Harley tells her that she can't keep Gus from the people who cared about him. They planned a funeral for him already, Harley tells her. She tells Natalia that she can come if she wants to or she can boycott it; she doesn't care. Natalia reminds her that she was his wife. "Don't tell me this is all about Gus," she says as Harley turns her back on her. Natalia goes to Cedars to finish paperwork for the insurance company. As she walks away, the nurse asks her if she needs to see a grief counselor. She shakes her head and wanders into Olivia's room for a moment. Later, her brother spontaneously appears at her bedside. "I don't come to visit you often enough so you rip your heart out to make me hop on plane?" Sam jokes, taking her hand. She barely looks at him.

Daisy brings Rafe a breakfast at his house and asks him to let her go to the funeral with him. He refuses. She reminds him that she loved Gus too. He tells her she can go, but not with him. His mother needs him right now and he has to spend time with her. She repeats that she loves him and wants to be with him. He kisses her and tells her that he's sorry before walking away. He goes inside the house and his mother irons his tie for him.

Alan tells Natalia that she should be in charge of the service; she's the widow after all. "Gosh, thanks for reminding me," she says, walking away from him. Meanwhile, Lizzie thanks Bill for coming to the funeral with her. Ava arrives and Lizzie starts taunting her. Ava says that she feels bad for Rafe and pointedly comments that she doesn't think any child should go without a father. Elsewhere, Harley finds her daughter watching Natalia and Rafe from a distance. "You hold onto me and I'll hold onto you," Harley offers as Daisy rests her head on her shoulder.

Harley goes up again and recalls her first meeting with Gus and his "wonderful craziness". She wishes the best for Olivia and says that there are things that she wishes she could change, but she's happy that he got back his son Rafe and knows that Zach and Jude are happy to have a new big brother. She feels so blessed for knowing his love. Natalia stands up and says that, while she was against this, she was wrong. She shouldn't have been wrapped up in her own grief. Hearing them all speak of Gus gives her strength; not a day went by when she didn't love him, her first love and her last. She can't say goodbye anymore and hopes that Gus lives on in the, "one family he has created in so many separate lives." The Reverend finishes with a prayer as everyone files from the church into the rain outside.
