The mysterious Natalia has a buried history with Gus, the first love of her life. She has been brought back into his life by Daisy in a bid to break up Harley and Gus. When she came to Springfield, she tried to stay aloof and keep Gus from immediately discovering that they had a son. After she lost her job in Chicago and Rafe was arrested, she moved to Springfield and began working at Company. Her presence and her past with Gus made Harley uncomfortable and added tension to the Gus-Harley marriage. When it was finally revealed that Rafe was Gus' son, he became more involved in both of their lives and her longing for their old romance started to come out into the open. Although she tried to keep her distance and started up a relationship with Remy, she and Gus continued to spend time together. Alan drew her and her son into his life as extensions of his family and tried to use her to break Harley and his son up. Finally, after he mistakenly believed that Harley was cheating on him, he and Natalia had a one-night stand. As his marriage began falling apart, she made it clear that she would be available for him.

Natalia talks with Vince Russo, her new lawyer, at the courthouse. She wants a lawyer who believes in Rafe and will keep him out of jail. Russo tells her they should make a deal; they can get this done quick or draw it out. She tells him to have faith. Faith has no place in a court of law, he tells her. She refuses to cut a deal and fires him. "I wish you the best of luck. You'll definitely need it," he says, walking out.
Daisy walks into Company and asks Natalia if she set Rafe up. Natalia explains that she would never put her son into that kind of danger. She asks Daisy to sit down. Daisy says that she still cares about Rafe. Talking to her, she starts to think that going to see him may be selfish and she shouldn't do that if it's wrong. Natalia complements her on being so mature. They spot Vince Russo walking in. He informs her that she can't fire him when Olivia hired him. He filed a motion to get Rafe bail but it was denied.
Frank and Natalia meet outside of the boarding house. He tells her that she doesn't need to do everything on her own anymore.
Olivia and Natalia stand by the water. Natalia is upset over what Rick said about Alan's brain. Still, she doesn't think she can stop believing. Olivia says the blood is messing with his head. "God works in mysterious ways," Natalia says. "So does Alan Spaulding," Olivia barks. Their lives are crap and they desperately wanted to believe in something that would make them seem less awful, but they aren't. Rick was just trying to stop them from being fools, Olivia says. Natalia can't shake the sense that there is more and the timing of Gus' death seems like a miracle. She imagines that Olivia is being cynical and unrealistic. Olivia insists she is only being realistic and will expose Alan as a faker. Natalia takes her hand and drags her to the hospital.
Olivia returns home and tells Emma not to let Natalia know she is playing hookie from the doctor. The look on her little girl's face changes her mind though. She runs off to her doctor's appointment. Natalia waits for her. Olivia comes out and says that things aren't as bad as she imagined. Natalia suggests that positive thinking is working for her. Olivia doesn't know if Natalia is naive or just annoying. Natalia tells her to have faith. Jeffrey arrives and tells her that Doris had him removed from Rafe's case. She's still optimistic and leaves. Jeffrey's bewildered and envies her optimism. Olivia feels sorry for her; she's sure that one day Natalia will wake up and realize she was part of a cosmic joke. He hands her the paper that was faxed to him about Ava. They look over the paperwork and he says that he can't make the decision; all of his decisions have backfired so far. She tears the paper up and tells him that he is a good father. "I may not know what I'm talking about, but you're a family man," she says. He picks up the papers and says he'll have them re-faxed. She smiles.
Natalia returns to the water and sits down. Frank calls and asks her to come and see Rafe. She hurries over and immediately asks her son if he's eating right. She admits that she called Mallet but only to keep him safe. He knows that she didn't turn him in. She apologizes again. He tells her that everything will be fine. Leaning in, she tells him that Alan has a blockage in his brain and his visions may have only been symptoms of his condition. She hopes that, like her, he will choose to believe it is more than that. He'll try. Olivia listens and shakes her head.
