“Buzz” Cooper left Springfield for Vietnam after high school, leaving behind a young pregnant wife. She realized that he had abandoned her and told the children that he was dead. In fact, he had married the wife of a mentally unbalanced soldier he had shot and started a life with her in the Philippines. In 1993, he returned to town while Harley was in search of him. He hid out, blackmailing his ex-wife and her husband Billy. He was forced to confess who he was when Mallet discovered his true identity. Realizing that they had been abandoned, his children initially refused to have anything to do with him. They gradually developed a relationship and he settle down, opening his own diner.
Soon, he found himself involved in the power struggles at Spaulding, thanks to his infatuation with Roger Thorpe's wife Jenna Bradshaw. After her marriage to Roger ended brutally, she and Buzz teamed up on a series of failed business schemes. While he moved between Jenna and his first wife Nadine, he wasn't able to offer either woman what they needed. He would leave, grieved by Nadine's tragic death, only to return with Reva in a short lived marriage. Slowly, he once again developed a relationship with Jenna while getting to know the child she was 'nanny' to. However, he would soon discover it was his son Henry.
After that, he was stalked by Nola Reardon who was left to care for him after an accident left him with amnesia. Harley found him and brought him home. As his memory returned, he discovered that his fiancée Jenna was pregnant with another man's baby. They ended up marrying while she went into labor and she died in his arms soon after from a car accident. Traumatized, he worked through his grief by buying a new diner with the winnings from a lottery ticket and became involved with former mob prostitute Selena. After she fled from her criminal past, he began to settle down with Holly before getting involved in an unlikely romance with Alexandra Spaulding. Through all of this, he became an unlikely source of support for the Cooper family and its many problems. Particularly among these was Phillip Spaulding, who made it a life's duty to destroy the Coopers. This would culminate in Buzz's heart attack and Phillip's 'murder.' Helping his family through this crisis time, he also fell for troubled Olivia Spenser offering her some much needed stability and eventually winning her over against his competition - his own son Frank.

Berkley calls Daisy to inform her that she has been accepted. Classes start on Monday. She's shocked. They give her four hours to think it over. Buzz has eavesdropped on the call. He walks up to her and tells her she should go. She has to talk to James first.
The Spauldings arrive at the lake. Buzz is already there, waiting for them. Beth admits that this isn't what she thought Alan would want for a funeral. Phillip tells Alex that Alan loved her more than anybody. "Not more than you sweetheart," she says. As they stand on the shore, none of them are sure what to say. Even Buzz has trouble saying anything. "Alan, I can't imagine Springfield without you... you brought out the best and worst in all of us. You made us strong. You were our constant so we can never say goodbye to you. Each one of us found a piece of ourselves because of you and I'll miss," he says. They each take a handful of the ashes and then, one by one, scatter them into the water.
At Company, everyone gathers to say goodbye to Rafe. A call comes in. Lillian takes it and walks away in shock. Olivia takes the phone and then announces that Alan died. Everyone is silent. James walks out. Everyone is in shock. Blake can't believe he died when he seemed so good. Rafe wonders if this means he's making a mistake. Buzz tells him that he should still go into the army; it's what his grandfather would have wanted. Emma and Rafe talk about their granddad dying. He takes out his two magical quarters and gives her one. Whenever she gets lonely, she can look at it and think of him because he'll be thinking of her.
Lillian goes into Company and throws her arms around Buzz. They tell each other how glad they are to have each other.
