Help Out A Newbie

I only started watching in Feb or March of 08. Why did/does Jonathan think that he had to run with Sarah? I know Alan has been mentioned, but why would he want to hurt his great-granddaughter? Why was Sarah in danger but not Lizzie? None of this makes any sense.

Actually Alan wanted to take Sarah away from Jonathan and Lizzie, too. He wanted another Spaulding heir, and thought he'd do a better job raising her than her parents, Jon took her and faked their deaths in order to get away from Alan' s world.

Thank you. That makes sense. So she wasn't in any real danger from Alan. It is also weird that little Peyton has completely been forgotten for a good while.
