We, the fans have watched this soap with our mothers,
grandmothers, sisters, and friends. The people of Springfield were our daily friends. We became intertwined with their stories good and bad, heartbreaking and happy. Through the years we have seen many characters actors, come and go but, we remained loyal to our favorite soap for over 60 years.(that's me) Some of us felt a personal relationship because of the great actors who brought their characters to life. We wanted to come back day to day to see how each character would handle their ups and downs. We followed Ed Bauer, (little Billy) as a boy, we watched him battle the bottle, enter medical school, saw him tell Bert, he no longer wanted to be called Billy but Ed. We watched his character emerge into what he is today. We watched his many trials, heartaches, lost loves. He brought us joy too!
We, had our favorite couples, Holly and Roger, Reva and Josh, Billy and Vanessa, Blake and Ross, I could go on and on, but, you know all the rest you loyal fans. We saw these couples have children of their own, and followed their lives as adults. ie, Phillip, Rick, Blake, Bill, and Beth.
It will be a sad day for us all on Sept.18th, as well as all of the actors, past and present of the GL. We, will all shed a tear or many of them on that final day.
Thanks GL for giving us your best and worst of days.
R.I.P. Guiding Light. You WILL be MISSED!!!!!

Well said. Bert Bauer was a wonderful Matriarchial character. She was the touchstone on the show that many characters turned to for her wisdom and advice. So was Maureen Bauer.I have missed her character since it was written out in a car crash years ago.I think many women could identify with her as she faced many trials and tribulations with her husband Ed,daughter Michelle and son Rick. She also took in a wayward niece Bridget who made for a very interesting storyline back in the late 80's-early 90's.It was sad to see Ross Marler exit the show.I wish that Jerry Van Dorn could have made it back for the finale.

Reva and Josh have always been my favorite couple.Reva's spunk and energy were always fun to watch. And it was fun that she was also alittle crazy and unpredictable.

Guiding Light we will miss you.

Thanks. When I began to write this thread, I had so many thoughts in my head as what to write. I had to condense my many memories of the show. I know it is not over yet, just about 20 more episodes, and that's it, folks! I loved this soap, back when it was on the radio, then to TV in the Fifties. What a ride! It was a long ride, with many a thrill along the way. I just felt sentimental today, and had to express my thoughts about our favorite soap.

Thank you for this beautiful post. You did a wonderful job at summing it up for all the years that we have watched our beloved GL. I still say that you could get a job writing. You do such a great job. Also, I am so grateful for you and all of the other friends that I have posted with since joining this board. Here's to "Guiding Light" and all of our warm loving memories that we will cherish for many years to come. Thank you!

Hi Bizzie, I have to agree with you about meeting new friends. I have been on this message board for over 4 years now. I have talked and chatted with many of you through e-mail and the telephone.. We all have something in common, and birds of a feather flock together! Hopefully, after the show is over, the message board will be here to continue our thoughts with each other. You guys have been so helpful in helping me continue with my life. Thank God, for friendship, and I truly appreciate all of you.

I too hope that the message board will still be here so we can continue posting and staying in touch with all the friends on the board. There have been days when I would be having a bad day and I would look at the board and read a post that would make me smile, sometimes even laugh out loud, but most of all make my day better. Yes, thank God for friendships. Friends are great!

Whenever I think of Guiding Light I think of Roger Thorpe. He was an awesome villain. I remember being in Elementary school when he and Holly were together. I've watched ever since.

I will really miss the show.

How sad the end is almost here, your post made me cry as did all the others with their wonderful memories... I too have watched this show with my Grandmother and my mother for 38 years.... every episode was a loving tribute to my hero, my grandmother and with GL leaving i feel as if a part of her is leaving all over again... The Light will always shine in our hearts....

I Don't Want It To End!!! I know i sound like a little kid throwing a temper tandrum. I truly LOVE GL, I get so sad when i think about it coming to an end, this just can't be, how can the producers do this to something that has become so big a part of all of us. Soaps have been around for a long time and GL the longest, how can they justify removing it completely from our everyday. Shame on them for thinking that a game show can replace GL or any soap for that matter. Soaps, once was a housewife's entertainment, but has since become everyone's entertainment thanks to DVR and VCR. I did marketing survey's to find out what our customers were watching on TV and what times, I was very surprised to find that not only women watch soaps but just as many men also, especially those that work offshore. I am rambling I know, I simply can not stand the thought of no more GL, let's pray that another network will make a smart move and pick them up, it could happen!!

As each day passes and we see so many of the long time characters, we know the end is near. If only we could see Ross too, he was such a part of the GL, first as a writer, then as a performer. I know I am only dreaming about Ross, but, just thought I'd throw in my wish for a character to be seen again. Why couldn't the writers have brought Vanessa and Billy back together sooner? I love seeing them back as a couple!

I honestly believe that if the time slot was changed, it would have a better chance. It airs a 10 a.m. here in NYC, and of course taping it has no results o nielson ratings, or any other kind of ratings. They should have given it a decent time slot, before deciding to cancel it. Very unfair to a show that has been on for 72 years. Disgraceful, is all I can say.

I thought Bert was Ed's mother. Morrien (sp?) was his wife and mother of Rick and Michelle????
