Where I think GL went wrong.

**This is just my opinion and I am not bashing anyone** I was a huge fan of GL when I was in jr & highschool (1993-1998). I was a huge fan of characters like Bridget, Harly, the original AC Mallet, Jenna, Vanessa, original Dylan, Barbara Crampton as Mindy, Nadine, Roger Thorpe, Holly, HB, and the original Michelle. I feel that where GL went wrong is gettig away from these core characters. Bringing in new characters who viewers cant relate to. Changing the theme song and opening every year or two is bad as well. The "on location" shooting was also, in my opinion, not good as well. Its better now but in the beginning I had to take motion sickness pills to watch the show. My thought has been if it ain't broke then dont fix it. Stay with the core characters and storylines (the lewis family)Keep the same opening (the light house and the theme from the mid 90's is GL!). While Y&R is my favorite soap, I am sad to see GL go! This is my moms favorite soap and I feel her pain. At the same time I feel that Ms Wheeler got away from the GL we all used to know and love. RIP GL |

RIP GL I stopped watching Guiding Light after the Reva Clone storyline wrapped up and then came back a year later only to see GL go from bad to worse with the time travel story. The show became very unrealistic after 1998 with cloning, time travel and san cristobel story. Lots of fan favorites were either fired or left the show such as Michael Zaslow(Roger), Cythia Watros( Annie) and Wendy Moniz. Roger and Holly were my favorite couple, but when her leading man was fired for his illness( Zaslow) Maureen Garrett( Holly) was turned into a raving cartoon. She ended up being the nursery rhyme stalker and kidnapped a bunch of children. The writers basically didn't know how to write for a strong character like Holly after Roger left. The ratings actually begin to decline in early 95, but had a brief surage in 1997 with the Annie vs Reva fetal death trial and the Abigal Blume rape story. Guiding was voted Tv Guide's soap of the year in 97, but that all went to hell in a hand basket a year later. After a ten year hiatus from the program, I returned recently when I found out Phillip was coming back! But sadly CBS decided to cancel the show and I was stunned. I don't blame Ellen Wheeler completely for the show's demise, because it was going downhill 9 years before she made her debut. She basically added to the mess created by executive producers before her like Paul Rauch and John Conboy. Her intentions were good in order to save money with the hand held cameras, but it was not well accepted by the fans. I really hope GL gets picked up by another network, but P&G need to hire a new writing staff( keep Jill Lorie Horst), improve the look of the sets and please please get rid of that Love Will Save The World theme and bring back the lighthouse theme of the 90's.I wish GL well.

OH wow I forgot to mention Annie. Cynthia Watros was an awesome actress! She kept me tuning in. Paul Rauch is working for Y&R now. UH O. should I be scared lol. Yeah the "love can save the world" theme is lame in my opinion. I agree with your views. I will be tuning in for the bauer bbq and then for the last few eps. |

For me Guiding light started slipping when they fired Zaslow. He was a fan favorite and I think they did him dirty. Another soap(i can't remember which one) picked him up and wrote his illness into his storyline. Don't get me wrong, GL has always been my favorite, but I was very disappointed in the way they treated Michael |

to us who have watched over 50 years, the Lewises are not the core people. People die. I remember when PAPA Bauer was a middle aged guy. |

The core family was the Bauers, but then former writer Pam Long came on and phased all the Bauer's out and made the Lewises front and center. I love Josh though lol. |

I agree. I stopped watching when they didn't put Reva and Josh back together. They are the super couple. Then when Gus and Harley left. I really liked the Santos storyline. I love momma santos. She was evil. Now the characters are lame. I like Nat/Olivia storyline. Bill & Lizzy are just boring. Even with the kidnapping it's boring. Alan doesn't really have anyone to terrorize so he is boring. All of the coopers are boring. Cyrus turned good well for the most part. LOL(boring) Beth is never good to watch unless she is with Alan or Phillip. |
