Guiding Light's Nominations at the Daytime Emmys

Wednesday, April 30 2008

(Soaps.com)
This year's Emmy nominations were announced today on ABC's talk show The View. To crown off Guiding Light's much touted anniversary year last year, the show received a pack of nominations with few surprises.

Outstanding Drama Series

After the show's surprising win last year, when it made Emmy history and tied with The Young and the Restless for Outstanding Drama Series, the show has earned the nomination once again. Last year was the special anniversary year and Producer Ellen Wheeler and Head Writer David Kreizman made a point of tying everything up in the history of the show while continuing to push for greater experimentation in style and content.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

The show garnered two nods for its lead actresses this year. Emmy winner Crystal Chappell took home yet another nod this year for her work as Olivia Spencer. The past year saw the character undergo fairly severe changes which included coming to grips with Jeffrey O'Neill raping her in the past and their reconciliation with their troubled adult daughter Ava. More significantly last year, Olivia developed a dangerous heart condition which tore her apart and sent her on a downward spiral from which she still hasn't recovered. While these story lines proved controversial, they've certainly allowed her to display a range of contrasting emotions, bringing a perspective on the character which had never really been there before.

The other actress to get a Lead Actress nod was a bit more of a surprise. Nicole Forester (Cassie Winslow Lewis) picked up a nomination for her hard work as the stripper turned minister's wife. Last year we got to see her go through every degree of grief and mourning that daytime actresses hold in their arsenal. She has managed to firmly make the character her own, consistently surprising audiences with her choices.

Outstanding Supporting Actress

Gina Tognoni earned yet another well-deserved accolade for her performance as Dinah Marler. Whether showing off her comic bravura with Mallet or displaying her ability to be both vicious and fragile, sometimes simultaneously, Tognoni has proven once again to be a versatile and highly nuanced performer. Her work last year in the brain injury storyline earned raves from fans and critics alike.

Outstanding Supporting Actor

The past year saw the welcome return of Daniel Cosgrove to the role of Bill Lewis. The character came back and quickly brought chaos with him, causing upheaval in his family and quickly seducing most of the show's young female cast. His bad boy image, a stark contrast to the flawed but good-natured light the character used to have, caught on quick with viewers, particularly in his on-again/off-again romance with Lizzie Spaulding.

Outstanding Younger Actor

Fan favorite, and sometime Emmy winner, Tom Pelphrey got one more nod for his performance as Jonathan Randall. Although the character was only briefly on screen for scattered dates last year, he still registered well with viewers for his intense performance as the single father, sometime pyromaniac and former prince.

Guiding Light received a total of thirteen nominations this year. In addition to those already listed, the show was also recognized in the following categories: Outstanding Achievement for a Casting Director For A Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling For A Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction And Composition For A Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Live & Direct To Tape Sound Mixing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Achievement in Technical Direction/Electronic Camera/Video Control For A Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team.

Soaps.com sends our congratulations to everyone who has been nominated for their hard work and to all the people involved in the shows!
