Jonathan Jackson Returning to General Hospital! (Updated)

Monday, October 12 2009

Jonathan Jackson (TV Guide)
Updated October 12:

Jonathan Jackson will first air as Lucky on October 27.

Originally posted September 29:

As reported by Soap Opera Digest, Jonathan Jackson is returning to General Hospital as Lucky. He is set to report to work on October 1.

Jonathan won over fans in the role of Lucky from 1993-1999 where he first embarked on a sweet love story with Elizabeth. Since leaving the role, the actor starred in the movies, “The Deep End of the Ocean,” “Tuck Everlasting,” “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” and others, as well as appeared in several episodes of the TV series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.”

While this is exciting news, it comes at the expense of Greg Vaughan who has been playing Luke and Laura’s first progeny since 2003. As he stated on Twitter, Greg expressed, “As of today, with sad regrets, I will no longer be apart of what has been a big part of me and my families [sic] life. GH and TPTB have...choosen [sic] to take a new direction. I THANK ALL of YOU, for the many memories we've shared and new ones to come!!! ALL MY LOVE, & BIG HUGS...to YOU the FANS!!! I LOVE YOU ALL MORE!!!! GV

I think this is completely stupid. There is absolutely no reason why they should do this as the current Lucky is great.

I think it is disrespectful to GV. why do they always bring the orignals back. i don't think anything will change. to me jj was kid lucky. it will be hard to picture him as the adult lucky

I am excited to see what JJ can bring to the role BUT the way that Lucky has been written lately, I'm not sure even HE can save the character. I do look forward to his return though..I HAVE to be honest. There has been so much talk that HE is Lucky and it's been hard for many to see anyone else in the role (I being one of them) so to have him back may make the Lucky character more enjoyable again (to those who don't enjoy him of course). Any idea when his first airdate is?

I recall an article WAY back when with TG saying that Lucky should NEVER have been re-cast and should have just stayed dead in the fire because there are some actors/characters that are just irreplaceable (or something like that) so I look forward to how these two work off of each other again.

I remember they did this to Cotlin Scott when they wanted to bring back TC in the role of Nikolas...changed the stories and let him go and I was quite upset over that (I liked CS in the role). They also did it to the actress that played Maxie for a VERY short time (sorry I can't remember her name) to bring back Robin Richards as the original Maxie. Bringing back JJ isn't the first time, and I'm sure it won't be the last time, for the TPTB to do this.

Regrets to GV for having to leave the role BUT I think it is better for him anyways because they have turned Lucky into something he is not, and never has been, and GV's talents are wasted on such a whiny, pushover character. All the best to him in his future endeavours! (Is it true that he's going to Days as Eric Brady?)

Is this a way that TPTB think will FINALLY get the ratings up? If so, is JJ enough to do that? I think that many would watch for awhile BUT if they continue on writing Lucky the way they have, it won't make a difference in the ratings at all to have JJ back or not.

Oh I had more of a point but it just went right out of my head!

IA genhospchat, JJ is Lucky for me too but his personality can only go so far. The writers need to do their part in making Lucky an enjoyable character to watch.

Well i didn't think that JJ would reprise his role. Well i never saw him act as Lucky cause i was too long and didn't watch soaps then but i'm looking forward to seeing him as Lucky. We will miss Greg though. I did see JJ act in Camp Nowhere when he was younger. LOL. That movie is great. I just wonder why the producers let Greg go in exchange for JJ to return. Is it for ratings?? Soaps always to this. They bring back originals. Look at AMC. when they said the real Greenlee returns. Thats not right to say that cause the other actress most likely thought that she mend nothing to the show. I basically see this is every soap with characters who's originals return after they left once. Just some of my thoughts. But anyways i will look into seeing JJ's return debut as Lucky!

The thing that bugs me is that there appears to ba a total lack of class by TBTP with this move. Maybe the facts are different, but the appearance is that GV (and the rest of the cast) didn't know he would be let go AND replaced until it happened. Negotiations with JJ probably took a lot of time, time that could have been used to navigate an amicable and friendly change rather than this apprently harsh and disrespectful one. I may not have always loved the adult Lucky, but it's because he was written to be a clueless doofus, not because of GV. GV is a terrific actor, as evidenced by the addiction s/l. IMO, he did the best he could with the utter crap he was given to work with. No doubt Guza is patting himself on the back for bringing back JJ, thinking this is going to "fix" what is wrong with Lucky. Instead, he should be ashamed of himself for the lousy part written for Lucky and thoroughly embarrassed for the lack of class toward GV. Jackson, like Vaughn, can only be as good as the material he has to work with, and the material for Lucky the last few years has been a joke. (And, IMO, they haven't done any better by Mac or Matt.) Frankly, I'm surprised JJ would even consider taking the job given what they've done to the character.

Way to boost cast morale, IIC. Way to encourage viewer confidence in TPTB. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic.) You want ratings to increase? Write solid stories for the ENTIRE cast and commit to them.

Cherry, I'd say lately that A LOT of the cast in the past few years has been dealt a bad hand. I too am surprised JJ would come back after what they did to Lucky BUT I would venture a guess to say they told him they would fix Lucky to bring him back to this role. I can't see JJ coming back any other way. YES they could have fixed it for GV BUT perhaps whatever they have in the works, GV wasn't right for and only JJ could do whatever is coming?

I am not sure of the ins and outs of what happened (obviously) but PERHAPS GV KNEW this was coming? He twittered (or tweeted, whichever it is) that he will no longer be playing Lucky BUT that doesn't mean he didn't know about it. It wasn't that long ago that is was rumored that GV may not be reprising Lucky and may be let go so it's possible that they told him that something is in the works.

Either way, they need to re-vamp the WHOLE SHOW and the stories, not JUST replace actors to hope for a better show. Get back to writing stories and give us some suspense and get rid of all the mob crap (my vote would be to let Sonny go, his time ran out a LONG time ago, but that's just me) and let's see something EXCITING happening.

Why does the character recasting have to be at anyones expense??? Greg V. has been in this role since 2003. What does this say about GH and how they respect and treat their employees??? A new face does not mean it will save the day. Good writing, good stories that capitvate the audience, is how you win fans. I'm sad to see Greg go, in this economy it really hits home when you lose the family income. I wish him all the luck in his future endevors. And we can only wait and see how they write Lucky going forward and what the fan reaction is to JJ.

Is this information regarding JJ and GV going to be put in the Comings and Goings section sometime? There are some people who don't believe it until they read it there.
