Instead, Maxie and Spinelli come to see her. They have proof that Lulu could not have written the blackmail notes to herself. Spinelli produces a computerized sample of her handwriting and the notes and demonstrates the differences. Lulu lightens up a little at the thought that she's not as far gone as she thought. They brainstorm and try to figure out who would be trying to scare Lulu.
Trevor has gone out to Shadybrook, but he's stopped by a guard for not signing in. Maxie and Spinelli are on their way out when they see him. They hide so that they can see what he's up to.
Out at Shadybrook, Maxie and Spinelli are in Lulu's room trying to think of an escape plan when Scott comes into the room. He quickly takes note of Maxie and Spinelli's nuthouse garb and accuses them of trying to bust Lulu out. Maxie tells him that he's the person responsible for Lulu being here because he chased her and Johnny down like dogs. Nonetheless, Scott says that Lulu needs help and needs to stay right where she is. Lulu tells Scott to leave, but he won't go until Maxie and Spinelli leave too. Finally, they all leave Lulu alone in her room.
Out at Shadybrook, Spinelli is yelling through the tiny window in his padded cell that there has been a mistake. He says that his straightjacket is causing him to chaff and even without his beloved spleen, it's a bit binding. When the doctor comes in, Spinelli tells him that he netted the wrong butterfly. Finally, he slows down and tries to talk as much like a normal person as he can. When he finally winds down, the doctor asks about his childhood.
Back in Lulu's room, Maxie is freaking out because Spinelli has been taken away, but Lulu is calmly packing her bags. Finally Maxie gets through to her and Lulu snaps out of her cloud. They rush outside of the padded cell and Maxie tells her to act nuts. Before Lulu can protest, Maxie has knocked on the door and hidden. When the doctor steps out, Lulu says that she was feeling alone and is ready to talk about her childhood. Maxie slips into the room and whisks Spinelli out. After they've made it back to Lulu's room, Lulu asks what the exit strategy is, but Maxie and Spinelli don’t have one.
Back in Port Charles, Maxie has convinced Spinelli that they need to get Lulu out of Shadybrook before that place makes her worse! Maxie dresses as a doctor, with Spinelli as her patient, and they pop into Lulu's room. They explain their plan, but Lulu hands over the note that she just received. They quickly assume that she is being blackmailed and promise to help expose who is doing it. Lulu calmly tells them that she wrote the letters herself during a hallucination and is likely getting worse. Maxie decides to put their plan into action and sends Spinelli out into the hallway to distract the doctor while she slips off with Lulu.
Happy to help, Spinelli proceeds to make small talk with a psychotherapist who seems very challenged by his new patient with 'third person delusions'. Before long, Spinelli is put into a straight jacket and a matching white padded cell.
Spinelli is worried because Jason didn't sleep last night. He offers him a smoothie, but Jason says that Sonny is in trouble and if he could find Kate's shooter, things would ease up a bit. Spinelli offers his P.I. services, but Jason says, "The last time Jackal PI got involved, you lost your spleen." Spinelli implores Jason to indulge him in acting out a chess metaphor in an attempt to decipher the code of the shooter. No matter how Spinelli moves the pieces on the board, it keeps coming back to the likelihood that Karpov must've been the person to shoot Kate.
Later, Spinelli comes to see Lulu. He brings poetry books, as well as some comic books. Lulu just gazes at him and softly thanks him. As Spinelli starts to read to her from Robert Blake, Lulu coos that it sounds as if he's describing Johnny.
Spinelli and Maxie stay hidden beneath Kate's desk while the looters do their work on the Crimson offices. When they are sure that the goons are gone, they come out from hiding and inspect the damage. Maxie's upset about the mess, but Spinelli quickly finds what he calls a 'missive'. It's a note that says, "Next time Kate Howard dies." They decide to take it over to Jason's office.
