The first twelve years of Lauras life were spent being raised by Jason and Barbara Vining. Her mother, Dr. Lesley Williams believed her daughter had died at birth and didnt discover the truth for quite some time. When she did, she demanded her maternal rights, and Laura moved in with her. It was hard leaving the only parents shed ever known, and all her friends.
Laura was so distraught that Lesley finally relented and let her return to the Vinings, but she pined terribly for her daughter. Unbeknownst to Lesley, her husband, Cameron, had paid that family to move away.
When Lesley wed Rick Webber, he aided in the search for Laura. They eventually found her in a commune. Her personalty had been seriously altered, and Rick and Lesley took her back to Port Charles. With lots of explanation and love, Laura adjusted to her new parents.
It was there that she met and married Scotty Baldwin. He was a law student and Laura took a job at Luke Spencers disco to help defray costs. One night, when the disco was empty, Luke asked Laura to dance. His emotions got the better of him and he ended up raping her. Laura refused to identify her rapist and somehow forgave Luke, although he didnt forgive himself. She wrote him a letter, fully pardoning his actions, and when Scotty happened upon it, he tracked Luke down and punched him so hard, Luke fell off the bow of the yacht on which his wedding was scheduled to be held that same day.
Laura and Luke crossed paths frequently, and the romantic tension was always there. Scotty had run off, and Laura went to work for ELQ, only to find Luke worked there, too. They finally realized they were meant to be together. The adventures they shared were numerous, including stopping Mikkos and Helena Cassadine from freezing the world. The day of their wedding, the entire town turned out, including Helena who came only to cast an evil spell on the duo.
Life was never dull. Laura was kidnapped, believed Luke was dead, forced to marry Stavros Cassadine, and conceived her son Nikolas. When she discovered that Luke was alive, she chose to leave her child behind and reunite with the love of her life.
The next several years were a blur as they traveled the globe, evading danger. Lucky was born in Texas and the three disappeared for nine years. It was then they decided to return to Port Charles. They still existed in a tumultuous world. Laura was arrested for murder, but acquitted, and eventually gave birth to Lesley Lu. The child was born with a bone marrow disease, and Laura was forced to find Nikolas to save her daughters life. She had kept his paternity a secret.
Stavros Cassadine had kept Lauras mother in a catatonic state for a long time, and his mother Helena brainwashed Lucky. It was no wonder that when Luke discovered that Nikolas was a Cassadine, he found it hard to love him. There always seemed to be something in the way of their happiness, and eventually they divorced, only to reconcile years later.
Just before they were too re-wed, Laura confronted her step-father in the attic about her belief that he killed his lover there. Laura had been having recurrent memory flashes and losing her grasp on reality for some time. When he approached her with a hypodermic needle, she grabbed a heavy candlestick, hit, and killed him. The tragic event caused Laura to have a complete mental breakdown and she was institutionalized for a number of years, diagnosed in catatonia.
After years of grieving Laura's condition, Luke allowed Dr. Robin Scorpio to inject Laura with an experimental drug. The medication brought Laura out of her catatonic state, allowed her to reunite with her children, and gave her the opportunity to catch up on lost years.
Unaware that Luke married Tracy Quartermaine, Laura proposed, and he accepted. He hired a fake minister, and as Laura slipped away again, they exchanged vows and one last kiss. Helena Cassadine lurked in the shadows, casting yet another evil spell on the two lovers.
The medication Laura was given was short-term, and almost immediately she began to return to heer previous state. The family planned one last and early Christmas together, but with her time running out, Laura wanted to maintain her dignity and sign herself back into the mental facility. Once again, Luke kissed his beautiful Laura on the forehead and left her sitting in her rocking chair, oblivious to everything around her.

Over at the Quartermaine house, Laura tells Tracy that she's perfectly capable of fighting for what's hers. Tracy brazenly reminds her that Luke isn't hers anymore no matter how many times 'The Legend of Luke and Laura' is rammed down all of their throats. She then gives Laura a little refresher course and reminds her that Laura wanted the house with the flowersbeds and white picket fences, but Luke wanted to hit the road. Laura lets her finish and then asks Tracy what she and Luke have in common? Tracy softly says that they are both cynics and their relationship works for them because Luke doesn't have to be a hero, he gets to be himself. Laura tells her not to kid herself because Luke does love her. Nonetheless, she promises not to bother Tracy again though because she heard what she needed to know. After she's gone, Tracy lets out a sob.
When Laura returns home, Luke and Lucky are glad to see her. She asks Lucky to go find Lulu and Nik because she'd like a family meeting. After he leaves, Laura tells Luke that she and Tracy understand each other perfectly now. Luke marvels that they are both still standing, and Laura says that Tracy isn't planning on handing him over any time soon. "Nobody is in a position to hand me over to anybody," Luke says. He softens and asks what they are going to do. Laura says that she thinks their bond is as strong as ever and if she fought for him, she'd probably win. Without giving Luke the chance to respond, she says that she's not sure that they should be together at this point because she needs to move on, too.
When Lucky returns with Nikolas and Lulu, Laura proceeds to tell them about her plan. She explains that if she stayed in Port Charles, they would all live in fear of her relapsing. She says that she has decided to pursue her therapy in France in hopes of finding something permanent out there for herself. She says that her old life is lost to her, but she hopes to build a new one. Later, Nikolas tells Laura that his jet is ready and he has leased a house for her near the clinic. Laura thanks him and hears him out as he tells her that she has restored his faith in miracles. She asks if he still misses Emily and he holds back tears as he says that he really does. As she walks out the door, she says that hopefully they'll all be together soon. Nik promises to bring everyone over to visit her and Laura tells them to bring their significant others and kids so they can show France what a Spencer invasion is like.
Luke escorts Laura to Nik's plane. He tells her that he's at a loss for words. Laura says that maybe someday they'll get the chance to straighten out what's unresolved between them. She says that it does her heart good to see him so peaceful and that if Tracy did that for him, she's grateful. He says that she was right when she said that their bond still holds. Then he offers to go to France with her if she needs him to. Laura smiles and says that she's going to try like hell not to need him. They exchange a tender kiss before she tells him to be happy. In turn, he tells her to be well. As she walks away, he asks, "If the treatment works, will you come back?" She smiles, but can't find any words. Instead, she turns and walks toward the plane. "Goodbye my Angel," Luke says almost too quietly.
Once on the plane, Laura is so deep in thought as she peers out the window that she doesn't notice that Scott is also on board.
Luke and Laura walk into Laura's front door with their kids trailing close behind. Lesley greets Laura with big happy tears in her eyes. Laura assures her mother that she's safe now, but announces that there will be no more lies in this family. As soon as they decide to forgo a celebration at Wyndemere or Kelly's in favor of a family meal at home, there's a knock at the door.
Lulu lets a man in who introduces himself as a doctor from the institute in France that makes LS49 (the drug that brought Laura around two years ago and is credited for her reawakening now). He says that she should return to France with him for testing and further therapy. After he leaves to give them time to discuss the matter, the family debates what would be best for Laura. Lulu thinks that going to France might be her best chance at a recovery that lasts and Nik agrees. They leave her alone with Luke so they can talk. Luke tells Laura that he just wants her to stay awake and healthy. Laura asks about their relationship and he says that he's still trying to wrap his head around the fact that she's here.
A little later, Johnny arrives and Lulu is thrilled to see him. She introduces him to Laura and he apologizes for all he's put her daughter through. Laura says that Lulu explained all that he did for her and says how glad she is that Lulu has fallen in love with such a fine young man.
Next, Nadine arrives to meet Laura. Nikolas goes to the kitchen to get them some tea and the first thing Nadine does is assure Laura that she doesn't have to worry because Nikolas isn't serious about her. Laura says that she hopes otherwise because her son has told her how instrumental Nadine has been in his recovery back from grief.
When Lucky brings Liz to see Laura, the two women embrace warmly. Laura tells her that she's sorry the two of them aren't together anymore, but Liz says they will always be friends. Lucky says that since Laura wants to hear the truth from now on there's something they want to tell her. They all sit down and Elizabeth explains that her baby Jake isn't Lucky's biological son and why she lied. Lucky clarifies that he loves both Liz's sons as if they were his own and Laura couldn't look more proud of him. Laura tells Liz that she loves her and doesn't have the right to judge anyone. Just then, the institute in France returns a call from Laura. She explains that she called earlier to verify a doctor's name. After she listens for a minute, she says that she's not surprised at all.
After Luke has left, Laura shows up at the Q house and confronts Tracy for sending a phony doctor to cart her off to France. Tracy tells her that she's paranoid.
