Alexis talks with Sonny who asks her if the doctors are convinced she's dying of lung cancer or is it just her? Alexis tells Sonny it would be very irresponsible of her not to look after the welfare of her children. Sonny tells her she has 50/50 chance of surviving this and to quit focusing on the possibility of her dying because that's not her only option. He continues to tell Alexis that it's not her business who Sam has a relationship with.
Sam talks with Jason at the pier when Kristina asks if they'll kiss. Sam leans down to explain that sometimes adults go a different way in life and her and Jason are just friends.
Later Sam arrives at home with Kristina talking to Alexis about their boat ride with Jason. Alexis tells her that she doesn't want Kristina around him anymore because too many people are out to kill him. Alexis tells Sam that her fatigue is really hard to deal with and Sam covers her up replying she'll be right outside if she needs anything.
Sonny tells Jason that Alexis asked him to keep Jason away from Sam and Kristina. Jason can't believe it and asks Sonny if he wants him away from Kristina too. Sonny tells him he's not the biggest threat to Kristina, his brother is.
Alexis Asks Sonny to Keep Jason Away from Sam
Alexis makes a video tape for her little girls telling them anytime they need to hear about how much mommy loves them, just to turn the tape on. Kristina and Sam walk in interrupting her. Sam asks her what the video is for and Alexis tries to explain. Sam wonders why Alexis is acting like she's not going to beat this? She asks Sam what she would want to hear on the tape? Sam tells her that she'd want to hear that she mattered, she loved her no matter the mistakes she made, that she fought to stay alive for her.
Alexis, Sam and Kristina walk into the hospital for Alexis pre-op prep. Patrick tells her having Kristina in the room isn't a good idea so Sam says she'll take Kristina by the pier to the carnival for awhile. Alone with Alexis, Patrick tells her it is a good idea to make the plans she's making because there is a very real chance she'll die from this.
At the pier, Kristina jumps into Jason's arms and asks him to go for a boat ride. Sam calls Alexis to see if the timing would work. Alexis talks with Jason telling him to make certain the boat he'll be driving isn't wired to blow up or anything. Jason assures her it's safe and fine.
Alexis goes to Sonny to talk about Jason. She wants Jason to stay away from Sam because right now Kristina & Molly need her and Sam doesn't need to be in an emotional mess right now.
Sonny Gives in to Alcazar
Alexis and Ric discuss all the things that need to be taken care of before and after her surgery. Sam tells her she'll help however she can. Alexis heads to talk to Lainey about her cancer. She also tells her about walking in on Ric and Sam having sex and starts to laugh nervously. Lainey asks her if she's ok as Alexis continues to laugh. She replies that if she tells them she knows, it'll blow her whole family apart and cannot do that right now.
Later on back at her office Alexis has another coughing fit and Sam tries to comfort her. Alexis tells her she's fine and thanks her for being patient and calm helping her out. Sam assures her everything's going to be ok.
Nikolas enters, asking Alexis what she wants to speak to him about? Sam leaves and Alexis asks him to sit down. She blurts out the truth telling him there's no easy way to tell people that she has cancer. She explains all the things that are being done, including her upcoming surgery and chemotherapy. Nikolas tells her he's there for her every step of the way. She asks him to promise her something, that if she doesn't survive, he'll look after the children and do the right thing. He tries to stop her from talking but she is firm about this. He promises her that he'll always watch over Kristina and Molly, telling her he loves her and walks out.
Alexis discusses her caseload with the mayor and he replies telling her to go home. All the cases will be taken care of and the city needs her to get well. After he leaves, Sam tells her to ignore the mayor and for her to stay at work as long as she wants to. But Alexis knows its' time to give up the reins and head home, she was just not ready too so quickly. Back at home, she talks to Kristina about all the things she wants to do with her before mommy has to have an operation. Sam listening in, walks away with a painful look on her face.
Ric walks in asking if she's ok? He tells her the mayor has offered him the job as interim DA but wants to talk with her about it first because if it'll hurt their relationship, he'll decline. She tells him he should take it because he would be the perfect replacement.
Sam Makes Her Decision Whether to Stay
Back at Jason's place, he tells Sam that her energy needs to be with Alexis right now. Sam starts to cry but she tells him not to comfort her. Jason tells her she's hurting and places his arms around her. He tells her to stay, cry, talk, whatever she needs.
She tells him she went to Alexis' office to say goodbye and how she was mean to her. How she wanted to hurt her before she walked away from her mother. But as soon as Alexis told her the truth, all she wanted to do was to take over the cancer for herself, because she doesn't deserve this. Sam still thinks that Alexis doesn't know about her and Ric and Jason tells her to keep it to herself because it won't do anyone any good.
Sam tells him keeping the secret means living with it every day facing Alexis and knowing the truth but lying to her by omission.
Elizabeth interrupts them asking if she could talk to Jason. Sam willingly leaves and tells him they'll talk later. Elizabeth explains that she just had a confrontation with Maxi. She tells Jason it's vital for Lucky's addiction recovery, to never know they slept together.
Sam comes ...home... to help Alexis listening in on Alexis trying to explain to Kristina about her cancer. A confused Kristina asks her mom if she's going to be ok? Then Sam interrupts and grabs Kristina and tells her they'll make some cookies and then practice her swimming. Alexis looks on trying to hold back tears.
After Kristina's bedtime, Sam heads outside to get a breath of fresh air and Ric walks up to her asking about Alexis. Sam explains that Alexis just told Kristina about her cancer. Ric asks her if she's decided to stay? Sam snaps that her mother has cancer and where else would she be? And, she tells Ric, she told Jason about them.
Alexis walks out seeing the two of them outside talking and has flashbacks to seeing them making love.
Alexis talks with Sonny about her cancer and her intention to fight this. But arrangements need to be made. Sonny tells her to focus on getting better, to be alive and well. Alexis tells him that no one knows more about losing a mother at a young age than herself. She remembers the damage it did to her. The loss she felt, the walls she built up all because of that defining moment when her mother died.
Alexis asks Sonny if he could honor her choice with their daughter and leave her with Ric in the event of her death. She tells him that their daughter would have some day to day normalcy and her life wouldn't be so disruptive. But Sonny tells her that's one promise he can't make. He will NOT have the likes of Ric raising his daughter.
Later on, Sonny meets up with Jason putting plans in place to help him gain custody of Kristina if Alexis dies.
Ric Overhears the Truth About Alexis' Cancer
Alexis tells Sam she has stage 2 lung cancer and she's going to die. Sam asks her if she's sure? Alexis tells her she's received second and third opinions, it's true. She explains the type of cancer she has and that they want to operate. Sam is relived that there is something the doctors can do for her. Alexis continues on, telling her that after the operation, she will require chemotherapy and will be extremely tired and weak. Sam asks her if she wants her to stay?
Alexis tells her how they've taken the wrong turn with each other. She apologizes for all the hurt she's caused Sam and she's made such a mess of things. But right now, she's thinking about her little girls and Kristina & Molly really worship's her. Sam tells her that her priority is to get herself well and isn't sure her sticking around is the best thing. Alexis asks her to think about it but not to tell Ric because he doesn't know yet. She apologizes once again to her about all the terrible things she's said to Sam. Alexis turns around to see Ric standing there. The look on his face tells her he's overheard everything. Sam walks out telling them they need to be alone.
Ric walks in asking her for all the details. Alexis ...nonchalantly... the type of cancer she has and the doctors are going to operate. Ric asks her why she's waited for so long to tell him? Alexis tells him she doesn't have the energy to defend herself right now. She needs her family right now and hopes Sam will stay to help. Ric tells her that he'll do anything she needs! He'll find a way to peacefully co-exist with Sam if she stays. Alexis, coldly tells him thank you, she appreciates it. Ric tries to hold her but she fights him telling him she doesn't want to be held. But he keeps grabbing her pulling her close and she breaks down.
Alexis Tells Sam She Has Cancer
Sonny and Alexis talk about Sam. He tells her that Sam is very hurt and the rejection by Jason colors everything she does. If she stays in Port Charles, she could continue to hurt people and that's why she wants to leave town.
Alexis tells him that she and Sam had a big fight and she hurt and disparaged her. She pushed too hard and now she thinks I'm ashamed of her. Sonny asks her about her health, is her doctor giving her medicine? She sarcastically asks him if he's a doctor? But he tells her he's Kristina's father and needs to know, he sees her getting worse! She tells him it's some type of environmental thing in her office that she's reacting to but hasn't had the time to get it checked out. Sonny tells her she has to take care of it.
Ric storms in on Sonny and asks him why he needed to go to Alexis and tell her about him and Sam. Sonny slams back that Ric needs to grow up and face his wife! Later Sonny requests a search for Alexis confidential medical records and the file is brought to him not long after.
Sam walks into Alexis's office telling her she's leaving town now. She gives Alexis the same pity party how she knows Alexis hates her and is a huge disappointment and she wishes her a long happy life. Alexis replies she doesn't think that's going to happen.
Alexis asks for Sam's help that Molly & Kristina needs her right now. Sam tells her they will forget about her, it's not going to affect them much and besides, they have the ...perfect mother.... The perfect mother, Alexis replies, has stage 2 cancer and she's going to die.
Sonny asks Sam to reconsider leaving!
Alexis was on the phone making travel arrangements. In walks Alcazar and she asks how she could help telling him he hasn't cooperated in the past so what does he want now? Alcazar asks about how he can gain custody of his child? He wants Sky arrested because she left while she was pregnant! She tells him Sky is doing what a good mother would do. Alexis continues on telling him a father forfeits his rights when he endangers his own child! Alcazar threatens her that she shouldn't be using her personal feelings in a legal issue. Alexis starts to cough breathlessly. In walks Ric, seeing Alcazar confronting Alexis, he tells him to back off and get out! Ric asks her what's going on with her health, but she replies that her coughing fit was mostly for dramatics wanting Alcazar to leave.
Alexis asks Jason to come to talk with her. She asks Jason not to tell anyone that he took her to the hospital the other night. He tells her he won't lie for her but won't offer up information to anyone either. But sooner or later, the truth about your illness will come out!
Alexis Confronts Ric
Ric returns home to a dark house only to find Alexis in the dark. He tells her he thought she wasn't coming home tonight and she snaps back ...clearly not.... He continues on to say that he had a huge fight with Sam, but Alexis thought they were getting along ...real well... earlier. Ric continues on that she was out of line to degrade her daughter and call her pathetic.
She tells Ric to stop making accusations that there's something between her and the Mayor. Just then Sam interrupts them telling them she won't be long, just coming back to collect her things. But Alexis asks her to wait, now that they are calmed down they should talk. Sam insists there's nothing more to discuss and Alexis has made it clear to her she does not want to be a mother to her. Alexis tells them both that her family has not come first for a long time now and is considering resigning. Ric tells her she cannot turn down a career of a lifetime but she insists that her family is falling apart and it is far more important than any career.
Sam collects her suitcase and heads towards the door. Ric asks if she saw Jason and Sam shakes her head no. He tells her he thinks it's best to keep what happened between them because it'll ruin too many lives.
Elizabeth and Jason Get Together!
Alexis continues to cough, trying to catch her breath. Sonny asks Alexis how sick she really is? Alexis tells him not to make a big deal about it but Sonny refuses to let it go. He wants a straight answer. She confides to him about Ric and his loyalty to her.
Waiter comes in to tell everyone the emergency power is up and running but to take the stairwell. Sonny asks if she's really ok, Alexis assures him she'll be fine and he leaves.
Sonny arrives home to find Ric there. Sonny asked him ...what he did?... Ric fesses up immediately that she slept with Sam and it was mutual. He asks Sonny if he could keep Jason off his back with this? Sonny tells him to stop provoking Jason and to figure out what he really wants because he just ...bottomed out....
Alexis arrives back home finding no one there, she breaks down screaming in agony. She pulls it together and goes to clean up the pillows and blankets on the floor making everything ...look normal.....
