With Death Come Regrets

Dr. Russell goes into Alan's room and tells Jason that no one is allowed in the room but family. "I'm his son," Jason is able to say after some consideration. Dr. Russell explains that Alan suffered several massive coronaries during the hostage situation. He says that Alan was unconscious when he suffered his final heart attack a few minutes ago. When Jason is alone again with Alan, he tells him, "I was coming back to see you. It's what you wanted all along…you wanted me to come back to you. I didn't make it in time." Jason says that he realized that he was just wasting time trying to kill the man who took the hostages and caused Alan's heart attack, so he let him go. "He said that we only get one father." He chokes back tears when he realizes that Alan was his. "And when you needed me I wasn't here." Then, he tells Alan that Elizabeth is carrying his baby. He says that he would give his life for his baby. Now he realizes that's how Alan must have felt all these years about him. Jason suddenly realizes that all Alan ever wanted was for him to be happy. He reaches out and puts his hand on top of his father's and apologizes for not hearing him until now when it's too late. "I know that you love me."

Alan is Gone.

As Monica, Tracy and Edward talking outside of Alan's door, Emily sites inside with her dad. She is begging him to wake up. She tells him that he's the only father she's ever known. She recalls how sad and alone she felt when he first adopted her, and how he was able to turn things around for her. She leaves and room and joins Edward who takes her in his arms and tells her to run as fast as she can…away from him (because of the the kind of man that he's become). Meanwhile, Tracy is yelling at Monica for giving up on Alan. Edward tells Tracy that they should follow Monica's advice and prepare for the inevitable.

Jason comes racing into Alan's room and finds Emily crying by their father's side. She just looks at Jason and shakes her head. She leaves Jason with Alan and goes to find the family. Jason tearfully closes the door to be alone with Alan and says, "I'm sorry."

Family, First

In his hospital room, Alan asks for Jason again. He needs to speak with him and asks Monica to call him. "I don't want to mourn the son I lost anymore. I want to have a relationship with the man he is now," Alan says. Monica and Emily agree to find Jason for him. Outside, Emily bumps into Spinelli who tells her Jason is on a mission! Emily explains to Monica that Jason isn't at the hospital any longer. They hope he will return soon. Tracy arrives and heads inside. "If you're milking this to get Daddy's sympathy. . ." she says, and then smiles. "You scared the hell out of him and me!" she exlaims. With tears in her eyes, Tracy tells Alan that the whole family will be lost without him. Alan says not to worry - he'll be around to torture her for years! Edward comes in, promising a diet of bland, boring food for the rest of Alan's life. "You're a man filled with love and courage," Edward tells him emotionally. He tells Alan he is proud of him and smiles. Skye arrives and Monica grudgingly lets her in; Edward tries to head her off but Alan tells him to stop. Seeing he isn't getting anywhere, Edward leaves. Skye sits down, wondering why Alan is still talking to her. "How do you love me in spite of all the things I've done?" Skye asks. Alan tells her she is his family, as much as Emily, Jason an AJ are. Skye vows to stand by Alan throughout his recovery. She kisses him as Monica comes back in the room and then leaves. Weak, Alan asks Monica not to shut Skye out. Talking about their pasts, Monica tells him he is the love of her life. "Marrying you - both times - is the smartest thing I ever did," she says. Emily comes in, telling them Jason is on the way. Alan begins to have trouble breathing and Monica calls for a crash cart!

That's My Baby!

Outside Alan's hospital room, Monica worries about his health. She tells Nikolas that one more attack could kill him! Tracy comes by, wanting to go inside but Monica heads her off. Tracy tells her not to worry. "I want him alive as much as you do," she says. Skye arrives, wanting to see Alan and both women turn on her. "How dare you show your face," Monica says. Inside, Alan asks Emily where Jason is. She tries to distract him with stories of her childhood and tells Alan he is her hero. Emily hears the raised voices outside and goes to check on things. Skye tries to defend herself, telling them she had no idea what was going on in the hotel. Monica and Tracy storm off, telling Skye to stay away from Alan. Emotional, Skye watches through the glass and asks Emily if she can go in. Without the other women there, Emily okays the visit. Nikolas returns, telling Emily that Jason and Liz have been found and are okay. She goes inside to hear Skye confessing her involvement to Alan. "I never meant to hurt you, Alan," she says. He tells her she isn't at fault and forgives her.

The Search Is On

In his hospital room, Tracy tells Alan that hostage situation is over and the kids are okay. "Anyone seen Jason?" he asks but she doesn't answer. A few minutes later Monica comes in to find him alone. She tells him about Robin and that Emily and Dillon are fine. Alan tells her she is the only woman he has ever loved. "You never quit on me no matter what," he says, believing Monica's will kept him alive in the operating room. Emily and Nikolas come in the room and Monica leads them into the hall before Alan can see them. Emily explains that no one has heard from Jason but they know he was inside when the blast happened. Monica asks her to keep that from Alan, but allows Emily to go inside. Alan's first question is about Jason.

Truth and Consequences

At the hospital, Monica cares for Alan, who had made it through surgery. Alan asks to see his family and Monica assures him they will be there soon. Tracy arrives and pulls Monica away to tell her about the explosion. The rescue workers are just beginning to pull people from the rubble, and she doesn't know anything more. Back inside, Alan asks Monica what happened at the hotel, but she won't tell him there was an explosion. In shock, Alan recalls what happened while he was still inside. Why didn't Jason come, he wonders? Why did Jason stay away? Monica promises to get him through the ordeal as he continues asking for his children. "I wish things could have been different between us," he says.

Deathbed Confessions.

The mood in Alan's room is heavy. Monica tells Edward that even though Alan had an angioplasty, the damage to his heart muscle was already done by the time they went into surgery. Then she leaves so that Edward can be alone with Alan. He tells Alan to wake up so that he can get the approval that he's sought all his life. In case he doesn't wake up, Edward tells him that he's proud of all he accomplished. Suddenly Edward looks older than he ever has as he tells Alan what he's never told him – that he's proud to be his father. Alice comes into the room and hears that Alan might be too weak to recover. She tells Edward that Dr. Q knows that the family loves and accepts one another, no matter how twisted (she says this as Tracy walks in) they all are.

Alice and Edward leave so that Tracy can be alone with Alan. She takes a hard line with him. She tells him that he's not very original to come up with a heart condition in this family. He's won; she tells him that he has finally gotten their father's acceptance. "So wake up and make me regret telling you how much I love you," she painfully snaps. Then she lightens up a little and tells him that without him, Monica would throw them all out on the street. She doesn't know why Alan gave her the house anyway. Monica comes in to check his vitals and Tracy tells her that she's never been a good wife, but Alan loves her. "Give him a reason to go on living" she says and stomps out.

Alone with her husband, Monica echoes that she has been a lousy wife. And now she's even failed him in the OR. She said she just froze and now there's nothing anyone can do about it. "Your heart's a mess you know." She admits that she's broken it enough times, he ought to know. Too many affairs, too many lies, too many years before she realized that he is the love of her life. As she breaks down and sobs, Alan wakes up and says her name.
