When Jason shows up at Sonny's, he learns that Karpov is about to leave the country. Jason thinks that's good and that Sonny and Kate can live the life they always wanted now. Sonny sees it very differently. He firmly tells Jason to help him now or he'll have to turn to the Zaccharas! He says that he's running out of options and wants to give Jason one more time to return his organization to him. Then, he presents the papers that he had drawn up. Jason simply tells him that he's too smart to hook up with the Zaccharas, and then walks out the door.
Spinelli is worried because Jason didn't sleep last night. He offers him a smoothie, but Jason says that Sonny is in trouble and if he could find Kate's shooter, things would ease up a bit. Spinelli offers his P.I. services, but Jason says, "The last time Jackal PI got involved, you lost your spleen." Spinelli implores Jason to indulge him in acting out a chess metaphor in an attempt to decipher the code of the shooter. No matter how Spinelli moves the pieces on the board, it keeps coming back to the likelihood that Karpov must've been the person to shoot Kate.
Liz calls Jason and asks him to come to her studio. When he arrives, she asks him to paint the walls for her. He tells her that this is a bad time for him, so she explains her thinking. She says that there will never be a good time for them, so she wants to use whatever little pockets of time they can find. She says that she's responsible for other people too, but she needs to unwind. She offers a place to hang out together and time whenever they can manage it. Jason takes off his jacket and asks where he should start.
Jason is over at Sonny's house arguing about how Sonny handled Karov. Sonny accuses him of sitting on his hands, but Jason says that the business is running smoothly since he took over. Sonny tells him that if he doesn't fight for his territory, he's going to blow everything that he built from the ground up. He tells Jason that he taught him everything he knows, but now he's on his own and everything will come crumbling down around him.
When Jason returns to his office, he starts hearing about troubles with his shipment, but is interrupted by a visit from Claudia. She asks why his bodyguard is trading places with him and compliments Jason for letting Max be a big shot for his dad. Jason only wants to know what she wants. She says that she wants to stop a mob war from happening. She explains that Johnny is a hot head and asks Jason to give her brother a break for now. She asks why he didn't go after Karpov, however, after shooting Kate? Jason says that he didn't have enough proof, and then asks if her family did it?
Jason slips into his office and finds only Diane there. She explains that Maximus said something about 'cracking some skulls' and took the boys out on a field trip. Jason asks where they were headed, but Diane doesn't know. He calls Cody to find them before they start a mob war. Diane doesn't want Jason to humiliate Max in front of his father but Jason yells, "If I'm not going to war for Sonny, I’m sure as hell not going to do it to impress Max's father!" Diane assures him that Max won't start a war no matter how much he wants to keep his charade alive.
The matter settled, Diane pours herself another scotch. Carly arrives looking for her 'boyfriend' Maxipoo. Diane tells Carly to can the ruse because the Giambetti boys aren't around. Then she adds that Carly was a tad too arduous toward Max for her taste anyway. Carly discounts her and marches right over to Jason. She says that they have a problem with Sonny. Diane excuses herself to go home and soak in a tub, and then Carly tells Jason that Kate asked her to talk to Sonny, but it did no good. Jason says that he was hoping Sonny would cool off until they could get more proof against Karpov.
Maximus and the boys return to Jason's office. Jason quickly hangs up the phone and starts pouring drinks. He listens carefully as Maximus discusses how foolish Sonny was to go up against Karpov alone. Jason quietly asks if Sonny is okay and Max says that he is. Jason asks Max if he can go take care of 'that thing' and Max lets him go. Maximus comments that 'that kid' has way too much independence. Soon Claudia busts into Jason's office to inquire about his shipment, but finds Max instead. Maximus is impressed with the caliber of girls who continue to interrupt his son's business and asks if this is Max's girl on the side? Max nods that she is.
Jason goes to Sonny's house and asks if he has a gun because Karpov is likely coming after him now. Sonny shows his weapon. Jason asks what he was thinking going out alone? "I didn't have a choice, you wouldn't help me," Sonny answers.
As Max tries to explain why Carly is too fragile for Maximus, Spinelli and Maxie push into the office to tell Stone Cold about the death threat to Kate. Maximus interrupts their rambling to ask why Spinelli talks like a cartoon character? Maxie defends his honor by saying that he's a computer genius! Maximus notes that his guys hired a techy once and it was a sad day when they had to whack him. Maxie quickly changes the subject and Maximus calls her a 'smart cookie'. Then he asks 'Muscles' (Jason) to get the lady a drink. She gladly asks for a latte, some of those cookies with chocolate on them and a fashion magazine. After Jason has returned with Maxie's wish list, she says they need to deal with Karpov now and produces the threatening letter left at Crimson. Maximus recognizes the name and says that Karpov is too smart to be that obvious.
