Reported at Daytime Confidential...

What the french toast is going on at Bob Guza's mobular world known laughingly as General Hospital?! First he says the Sweeps Stunt is something never before seen in Daytime and now it's being reported that Guza has pushed his big "stunt" back to January of 2009. Is this just another Sweeps Stunt if it doesn't happen during Sweeps? Is it just another move designed to torque off the fans? Or is it just a stunt that ultimately no one will care about?

“You’ve never seen this [storyline done] before on daytime. It’s way cool, super innovative, and will surely get [your] attention.”

—GH head writer Bob Guza on moving his previously reported big November sweeps-stunt to January 2009 in Soaps In Depth.
(D/C's translation of his statement: "Let me see if I get fired first before I give them my “best” stuff, which I blatently stole from either a movie or a prime-time series.")

What say you peeps? What do you think the truth behind this latest move is?

Haha when I read the full article in SID earlier this week, I laughed my a$$ off. I'm sorry, but if it's such a big sweeps stunt what's the point of airing it in January.

I could add more but I'll be polite and refrain.

Part of the reason they're called "Sweeps" is because big events happen that involve multiple characters and storylines that have 'sweeping consequences' for the show and future direction. Part of why they're called "Sweeps" is for the sake of Nielsen ratings 'windows' for gathering data for advertising rates.

I'd rather have the writers take the time they need to do the story 'right' than have it timed to a particular month. IMO the writing for the show since the ending of Kate and Sonny's wedding and the lead-in to the Scrubs wedding has been very good. Olivia's entry into the mix and the upcoming reveal to Sonny about his son, the MOC for Sonny & Claudia, the complications with Robin's HIV, the re-entry of Luke and Laura and a Spencer adventure, the clarification about Jason, Sam, Lucky and Liz's relationships will all be playing out during THIS "Sweeps" and I think it's going to be great to watch.

I'm looking forward to whatever the 'never-before-done-on-soaps' event is because I thought both of last year's "Sweeps" stories--the Metro Court explosion and the B & W Ball--were very well-done and provided great momentum. This year's "Sweeps" in February was NOT, BUT, it was right after the strike and I feel it's appropriate to give the writers the benefit of the doubt. This November has me watching and excited. It's not organized as a group event in the way the MC and B&W Ball were, but, LOTS is happening and much future storyline will proceed from what happens now.

I have no complaint about this 'wait'. Perhaps it will drive ratings in a NON-"Sweeps" month IN ADDITION to this month's. Let's watch and see, shall we?

If that is what this is, then he deserves to get canned.

If he just isn't able to get it done for production reasons, then so be it.

Personally I don't want any more of the one day stretching into a month crap.

I hated it last year w/ the Metro Court disaster and truly hated the fact one night took us from Halloween to the week of Thanksgiving, in real time for the B&W ball. Especially since no JUSTICE came out of either. We still are dealing with Mr. Craig's multiple identities and crAZy!

At this point I'm just hoping to see the death of one or more of the characters I can't stand (Trevor, Krapoff, Jerry Jacks, crAZy) and no more month long days!!!!

There should be enough talent in the writing pool to dream up something better by now.

I agree. No more 24 or Soprano rip-offs. Please. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it also shows the creativity well has run dry!

Excellent point Liz-K. I completely agree with you. Imitation may be the most sincere form of flattery... however, it does not necessarily indicate great writing abilities. If I have to endure another month long event entailing all of the characters wearing the same clothes and cohabitating in the same place, then I will be disappointed. These "imitational plot point themes" tend to be centered around disaster, death, and destruction. I firmly believe a lot of the viewers are commenting on the show picking up for the better over the last couple of weeks due to the lack of those events. It seems to me (IMHO of course) that most of the viewers prefer romance, adventure, and family-centered events over the MOB and devastation.

Well put, I couldn't have said it as well. I am loving GH right now, lots of stories going on. Can't wait to see how Sonny get saved from the chains, cement and knife wound. Maybe this will make him, Jason and Sam all go after Jerry, and Karpov. And they will all deal with the Anthony later. Unlike some others I like the mob stories.

Oh that Guza, always being quoted saying one thing...... then changing it.

Remember the" TMK was going to be a real soapy twist"..... more like a twist of crap! Oh and "Logan's death was going to be a murder mystery."..... mmmk okay, that was very mysterious, weeks I wondered who done it.

Oh and my favorite..... "The brutal death of Emily Q will be the greatest love story ever told." ..... umm... yes, seeing a women repeatedly strangled is really romanic. Thanks, Guza.

Hi NoSoup-

I just have to add to that:

Logan's Murder Mystery was also supposed to lead over into January... Umm... yeah we were all sick of it by the end of August and it was pretty much resolved at that time too.

Also, Logan's loss was supposed to be Johnny & Lulu's Gain... some gain that was. Lulu was in the looney bin and Johnny has been plagued by his toxic sister and lunatic family. Thanks for that gain Guza!
