Deke is the reason why Sonny is in the mob in the first place. Deke was a highly respected police officer in the Bensonhurst Police Department. However, to his family, he was hell on wheels. Deke was very abusive to both Sonny and his mother Adela Corinthos. Deke would lock Sonny up in closets when he knew damn well that Sonny was closter pheobic. Deke would also beat the hell out both Sonny and his mother just for the hell out of it. Now enters Joe Scully, he was the mob boss at the time Sonny was being abused. So Mr. Scully offered to help both Sonny and Adela by eliminating Deke out of their lives. All Sonny had to do was come work for Mr. Scully and his organization. So both Sonny and Adela took him up on his offer. So with that, Deke is now eliminated. And Sonny now works for Mr. Scully and his organization. Let me ask you all something, if someone offered to eliminate your and your mother's abuser, would you take them up on their offer???? And would you also do whatever it took to pay them back???? I would on both accounts. Now I know some of you may say that Adela should've called the police on Deke, well that was not an option being that Deke was a police officer himself. Some of might say that both Adela and Sonny should've left. Well that too was not an option because A. They didn't have the financial means to. B. Deke would only just find them and the abuse would've been worse when he did find them. So ask you all to be mindful of your Sonny hate, because of Deke Woods is the reason why Sonny is in the mafia in the first place ok.

he didn't have to stay in the mob all these years though and become the mob boss he is now. it might have been about saving his mother and paying back a debt in the beginning, but now he's just in it for the power.

Didn't realize that was how it all happened, but that would make complete sense as to how Sonny ended up as a gangster. I also thought that once somebody was in the mob, regardless of where they were in the food chain, they could never get back out?! That would explain why Sonny stays in. Actually, this could make the Dante story line that much more interesting if he found out what was really going on; he's already disenchanted with his 'partner' and thinks the guy has no feelings for the innocent people in Sonny's life. What if Dante finds out just what was really behind the execution of the cop he witnessed as a boy that caused him to want to be a cop?

I see what you are saying and though Deke may have been the catalyst for Sonny getting involved in the mob, Sonny chose to climb the ranks because he wanted power and control.He could have gotten out or stayed connected but not gotten so entangled with the mob.
