His character talks about "getting rid of so-and so" so casually. We know he plays a mobster, and I doubt there is a following of teenage boys watching GH BUT I notice in the past few years its getting worse. I think Sonny and Jason's characters should be downplayed as far as taking human lives. It bothers me - the casualness of it. We see Sonny as a human being with feelings, loving his kids (or at least saying he does) and showing compassion to Carly in the hospital but then the other side of him wanting people killed as if he were just killing a roach. How can the writers ever mellow him out and make him a normal guy after having people murdered? The same goes for Jason. In the old days this wasn't shown on GH, not in Dr. Hardy's days. Any opinions? |

I think that the writers are never going to get away from the mob. They seem to have settled into it permanently, much like the hospital is a permanent part of the show. |

I think they just messing Sonny character up.I'm a big Sonny fan now they messed up when they pair him up with Claudia because the person he needs to be with is Carly. It seem like when he with Carly even though he was a mobster but he wasn't that bad. Carly kept Sonny focus and Mellow, Sonny used to laugh about every little thing.I'am asking put Sonny and Carly back together and change his character a little just down play the mob role a little. |

I agree...I think that Carson may be drawn together again...especially as Claudia is taken out and Carly founds out about Jax secret. I'd love to see Carly and Sonny move in together to raise Michael and Morgan and Carly's new baby. Which would drive Jax crazy. I'd like to see Sonny focus on being a father to kids and a mobster secondly. Especially has Dante learns that Sonny is his father. But I forgot about Olivia...Her and Sonny annoy me. She should be with Johnny. I do think Sonny can be redeemed but they need to do a 180 with the character. |

I was really annoyed when Sonny was ready to knock off Johnny, who has been loyal to him. Johnny has suffered at the hands of his father and sister and should not be punished for their deeds. |

I see Sonny as a fallen angel. In Milton's Paradise Lost, Satan says, "Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." Better to be a mobster than fix cars in Bensonherst. Olivia, who knew him as a child as well as later, said to him at the Carnival, "You have beautiful manners and a beautiful soul. It's what's in between that's messed up." She had foreseen his fall (although not her own, but that's another story) and so kept their child away from him. The further into hell one goes the more demonic one becomes, and this is happening to Sonny. |

All characters are redeemable to a point, Luke, Edward Q, for example, for all the bad they have done over the years we still love them, it all comes down to the writers and if they want to redeem the character or send them into oblivion. I think if they played Sonny's behavior over the past few years as a total meltdown from his depression. A slow downslide leading to a major mental breakdown. then spend some time in counseling after a stint in a mental facility, some serious soul searching, its workable but will the writers make Sonny likable again? I guess we'll have to wait and see |

Any opinions? I can see what you are saying...However I don't think that Sonny, Jason or the mob stuff is going to go away being those two are the shows biggest draws...The mob aspect sets the show apart for any other show...(BUT I certainly wouldn't pass on any balance using the hospital either)Sonny is actually alot more tame than when he first was introduced....and I think that is in part of the popularity of the character!! Here is what I think...When you have characters like for example Jason...GH took a risk...here was the "golden" boy for the Quatermaine clan....He was their hopes and dreams and acted very rational to the point of being somewhat bland...so the risk was turning Jason into a mob enforcer...yet the way the show did it they kept Jason's reasonings pretty close to the core of who the character originally was as a Quartermaine...Yet they continued to show Jason as a rational, logical thinker...one that didn't have a thirst blood just for the heck of it....Jason's softer side was still shown during some scenes which made him a rootable character despite him being a mob enforcer....We also saw Jason bring reasonable thinking into situations that calmed Sonny down...This is what made the duo attractive to the audience!! Sonny bark and was reactive without thinking and Jason was quiet, man of few words and highly sensible!! While I am not sure that Sonny needs to be redeemed it is more that a mob boss is the head of a show called General Hopsital where there is NO big actor getting as much storyline or airtime as the mobster!! Heck I can't disagree with the absurdity that has become....I think GH lacks alot of balance and perhaps that is SOME of the reason GH is continuing their downward spiral in the ratings category!!! Mob meets mob over and over gets OLD...Mob with opposite stuff would probably work a whole lot better!! |

ITA with everything you have said! I want Carson back. He will always love Carly. As for Olivia, Sonny's character would have to do a complete 180 for him to forgive Olivia. Its is really hard for Sonny to forgive that much of a betrayl. This is what I'm hoping for. When Carly finds out about Jax, Sonny finds out about Dante at or around the same time. Carly and the kids go to sonny's with her new baby girl so Jax can't get to them. The guards keep him away and the chemistry unfolds all over again |

Mob meets mob over and over gets OLD...Mob with opposite stuff would probably work a whole lot better!! I agree with the bolded part totally. What does he need to be redeemed from, who he is or what he does? Sonny is a MOB Boss, and although we hate violence, that's what they do. I think he balances business and family as well as he can being that he will always have enemies. He usually goes after those that has threaten him or his family or someone that has tampered with his shipments of (?) All the women that Sonny has been with knew what he did for a living, but it didn't matter because they ALL fell in love with the man not the business and purposely had his children (all except one). So I see posters stating that Sonny is either clueless or an a$$h_le. He's a great actor and can portray both personalities. The thing with Johny is just jealousy and he has always been territorial about the women that he wants. That doesn't make it right but he is consistant. As you can tell I love the Sonny character, it started with Brenda and I was able to see the human side of Sonny, the love for his children and the hurt he felt about his childhood. So that helped me to understand this character. There are times that the writers will write him in a bad light (as they do for most actors) but that's not his fault. Like Steve Burton stated, they just do what they are told. Conclusion: As Tony Braxton would say "I Love Me Some him". |

If he can forgive Brenda for the wire and Carly for turning him into the Feds he certainly can forgive Olivia for raising a wonderful son. |

Clavis...Good post....I agree that the mob is part of Sonny...when the show brought Sonny on, I think they were a bit of unsure if he would take...and yet when he did they had to write the character to me multi layered...So they gave Sonny depth...and by doing so they also made him a rootable character to many!! |

As for Sonny being redeemed again, not sure he needs to be redeemed....Granted I was NOT a fan of Sonny digging into Spinelli almost a year ago and I would have liked to see that addressed...Sonny we know is a hot head...That is just part of the characters make up...For me it is more pronounced when Jason and Sonny aren't together...Just like Jason is a bit bland...So if some think that Sonny needs to be redeemed for putting out hits on rivalies, I am not sure I agree with Sonny getting redemption!! Thanks. |

Okay, I was off during the whole "Reese" arc, so I have no idea who this chic is, but the Sonny's monologue is exactly the reason I love the character and the ONE WAY he can be redeemed. You understand who he is in this moment. This is the Sonny who will be devastated by the Dante reveal and this is the Sonny who might try reaching out to Dante to try and connect. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZddNN-h5iU |
