Father Maloney prays over Doris as Gloria and Alec cry at her bedside. Gloria and Alec are devastated at losing her. Alec says that his nana is in heaven now. Gloria and Alec go home and Eddie arrives to console them. Gloria tells Eddie that she made some promises to her mother and that she has to live a good life. She informs him that she doesn't even know how she could ever have even thought about killing Michelle and tells him to call off the hit. Eddie looks at Gloria with a concerned face and informs her that it is too late. The hit man has already gone dark and no one can get in touch with him. Eddie tells her that he couldn't stop the hit…..even if he wanted to!
Doris has severe pains in the hospital with Gloria by her side. Father Maloney comes to visit with Doris and Gloria tries to get him to convince her to do the therapy. Doris insists that he is busy and doesn't have to come see her. Father Maloney says that sometimes it is hardest to accept the things that we cannot control on this earth. He then informs Gloria that we are all her for a certain time and that we all have to use that time to do God's will just as Doris has done. He says that right now they just have to trust that things are in God's hands right now.
Gloria begs Doris again to take the treatment. Doris says a prayer to forgive us sinners now and in the hour of our death. She tells Gloria that death isn't anything that you have to be afraid of. She informs Gloria that she is ready and that she does not want to be filled with tubes and drugs. The doctor stops in while Doris takes a nap. Gloria tells the doctor that they need to begin treatment, but she informs her that it will only delay the inevitable.
Gloria leaves work to care for Doris at home. She insists that her mother needs to go back to the hospital because she is burning up with a fever and is in severe pain. They get Doris to the hospital and check her in. The doctor finally comes in and informs Doris and Gloria that the tests show that she has cancer.
The doctor tells Doris that the cancer is advanced….stage 4. She then tells her that they can use aggressive cancer treatment to fight it ….but that due to her age and previous heart conditions….it needs to be thought through. Gloria insists that her mother fight it, but the doctor insists that it is up to Doris. The doctor tells them that the other option is to keep her mother comfortable during this time. Doris tells Gloria that she is an old woman, but Gloria tells her that she needs to fight it….for her and for Alec.
As Gloria prepares Alec for school, he notices that his grandmother is not feeling well at all. Doris can't answer him and falls out of the chair onto the floor. Gloria and Alec rush over to her and end up rushing her to the hospital. The doctors take her back and make Gloria and Alec wait in the waiting room. Gloria tries to assure her son that she is going to be ok.
Doris is finally placed in a room where Alec and Gloria go to visit her. Doris starts to come to and is shocked to be in a hospital bed. Gloria tries to tell Doris what happened. Doris acts like she remembers and Alec goes over to hug her. She promises him that she will be ok. The doctor comes in and asks to speak with Doris….in private. Gloria tells the doctor that she would like to stay but Doris tells her that she will be ok and to go ahead and take Alec out of the room. The doctor tells Doris that she wants to run some preliminary tests. Doris demands to know what the tests would be for….and the doctor tells her it is to detect cancer. Doris admits that she did have stomach cancer 10 years ago, but has been fine since. Doris agrees for the tests and says that she doesn't have much choice.
Eddie shows up at the hospital to be there for Gloria and his son. Gloria thanks him for coming. He then reminds her that if she needs anything from her….she knows that all she has to do is asks. She worries how she is going to pay for all of this and he insists that he is going to help her with that….and anything else. Doris reads the bible as Gloria and Alec sleep in a chair. Eddie covers them with his jacket and walks over to speak with Doris. She takes his hands and thanks him for everything…for being there for all of them. He tells him that he is a good man and that Gloria will come around. She tells him that the doctors are going to do some tests….but that it will be fine. He gives her a kiss and leaves.
Doris wakes up with Gloria by her side. One of the nurses has taken Alec so the two of them can talk. Doris tells her that Alec is her priority and should always come first. Gloria wants to know what kind of tests the doctors want to run. Doris tries to shrug it off but ends up telling her that they want to check for cancer. Gloria tells her that she doesn't want to lose her. The two of them hug and Doris promises that she will always be her mother. Gloria cries, but Doris insists that she is tough. Her mother then asks Gloria why she turns Eddie down when he wants so much to be with her. Doris tells her that Eddie loves her and Alec enough to find a new way to earn a living. Doris informs her that God sometimes gives us a second chance to make things right…..and that she wouldn't be her if that weren't true!
