DOOL facing an uncertain future?

Saturday, February 03 2007

DOOL was first aired in 1965! (NBC)
Since Soaps.com reported the news that Passions has been cancelled, we have been inundated with emails from loyal soap fans everywhere, who want reassurance from us that the rest of their soaps will not meet their demise in the same fashion.

Here is just one from a long time viewer, Mindy W, who writes, "I heard that Days is going off the air. I wanted to know if that is true? I hope not I love watching Days. I have been a huge fan for so many years so please tell me that it is a rumor."

When we watch tearfully as one of our beloved soaps comes to an end, we automatically think to ourselves, "What now? Which one will be on the chopping block next?" We're hearing a lot of rumors that are a little too close for comfort. With the demise of the NBC daytime drama,Passions comes talk of the future of yours and my favorite soap, Days of Our Lives. Rumor has it that when the show's contract expires with NBC in 2009, the show will be either canned or shifted to another network, such as ABC or
CBS.

NBC Universal Television president Jeff Zucker recently suggested that because NBC's only other soap is Days of Our Lives, it's is unlikely to continue past 2009.

While we don't know the future of the soap, we do know that 2009 is a solid two years away and anything can happen between now and then.

Back in October 2006, Hogan Sheffer was hired as head writer. In just a few months he has added quite a few new writers to his staff and has let go of some of ex-head writer James E. Reilly's staff. Already we're seeing various improvements in the storyline, including pace and execution.

NBC
On the boards we're hearing that many of the viewers are planning to 'boycott NBC' if they have a hand in canceling the show. I understand this thinking. When the now defunct Sunset Beach was canceled, I cried like a baby! Since Days of Our Lives is produced by Corday Productions Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television, we can rest assured that it is not completely up to NBC, so perhaps the rumors will become fact, if NBC wants out. Maybe we'll see the show on another network!

Soaps.com's Soap Journalist, Shannon Burrell, spoke with Rachel Melvin (Chelsea Benson Brady) last Tuesday, and here is what she had to say regarding the future of DOOL:

"I think when people heard that Passions was cancelled, some of course wondered if we were going to be next. But, we had a pep talk/rally with the head of NBC and Ken Corday, and they assured us that we are going to be fine and for us to keep on doing the best that we can do."

Cheers to Ken Corday. Hopefully this will make fans feel a little more at ease.

omg!! if days is cancelled i dont kno what i would do!! true, 2009 is two years away but in only a matter of time it will seem like its rite around the corner. i beg all of the people who are in charge of whether the show lives or dies to think long and hard about how it would effect the fans to lose this show. there are so many different reasons that we love this show b/c days means something different to each of us. i am only 17 years old and i not only love watching this show, but i admire and respect all of the actors and actresses on it. and if days means this much to me, imagine how much it means to someone who has been watching for years longer than i have. all i am saying is that losing this show would be like losing a part of OUR lives and that its future after 2009 should be very carefully considered from all angles--especially the lives of the devoted fans. )'=

Please don't cancel "Days"! There are lots of us, including myself out there who have watched "Days" from the 1st day it aired and it being cancelled would leave a real void in mine and alot of other's lives. I still miss not seeing Another World everyday since it's cancellation(another show I watched from Day 1). Hopefully you will take into account the comments from all the viewers, but when you have viewers who commit to watching a show for 40+ years it not only means dedication to the show itself, but that the show must have something to offer to make people commit 40+ years of their lives to that show. So, please, please, please don't cancel Days of Our Lives because it would feel like losing a part of my "family".

I hope Days isn't canceled. I love Days and have watched it since I was 14. I'm 37 now. The characters feel like a part of my family. I would much rather see Days than shows like Jerry Springer and all the different shows with the judges showing deadbeats.

NO!!!! Its just not freakin possible!!! DAYS has way too many LOYAL fans for that to ever happen. For example, I am 24, but I have watched DAYS since I was 10. Its literally a part of my daily routine. Over the past 14 years, I'd say I have missed the show a total of 10 times, if that; and it was miserable missing those days. I personally think that DAYS have the opportunity to grow, I mean the show has been on the air for decades. Why not extend the show and do a spin-off under the direction of Mr. Sheffer. Even though negotiations couldn't be reached between the show and Mr. Mascalo, I think Mr. Sheffer and his staff has done (no excuse me) is doing a superior job considering the storylines and cast they have to work with. This is still a sort of transitional phase for the show. The new staff hasn't even been on the show for a year yet and it has VASTLY improved over a couple of months....just imagine what they could do with the show in 2 years.

I don't know what the furture holds but I do know NBC is my preferred TV network. If they cancel DOOL, I don't think I would EVER tune into the network again, SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!

If it started in 65,guess that,s when I started watching. I was in elementry. I am 55 now. My grandmother watched, and my aunt now and she is in her 70,s.If they remove all the soaps they will get alll the women shows. There will be nothing, and I mean nothing to watch.News, once you hear it you don,t want to hear it again.Jerry Springer,he is a joke. Don,t know how he stays on air.How about a cooking show, people. Like we don,t have enough. They will probably put some stupid thing on. I for one WILL not watch if they remove DOOL.

PLEASE DON'T CANCEL DAYS!!! MY grandmother, my mother, my sister, myself, and now my daughter loves watching this show and between us all have watched it from day one! I am a HUGE fan of Days!!! This is the best show out there and would be a HORRIBLE mistake on NBC's part to cancel Days. Please give Days a chance to show you how great their show is and how devoted their fans are to them and keep them on air.

I;like "booknut" have watched soaps on all channels for a VERY long time. I settled into the NBC line-up because their stories were better at the time. Now I don't want to let them go; to be honest except for "Days and Passions" I don't watch soaps. Thanks to this wonderful venue I kinda track the others;but not much. If NBC decides to scrap (BIG BIG MISTAKE)"Days" I probably won't tune into any other soaps; I'll just slip in another dvd or an taped spot of my soaps. I still watch episodes of "World" and still very much enjoy them; I'm sure I'm not alone. Why can't the sponsers see this. They want us to watch their channel; well if we wanted to watch some "talks" we wouldn't be watching and ENJOYING and FIGHTING!!! to keep our soaps on!!!!

Days can't be cancelled it's been on for such a long time. I've been watching it for 6 years and it's the only soap I watch. There's others who have been watching for a longer time and i'm sure they'd be just as unset if not more, if Days was cancelled.
