Friday, November 21 2008

According to Soap Opera Digest, Wayne Heffley, who in the past played Jack Devereaux's (Matthew Ashford) stepfather and mentor, Vern Scofield, at The Salem Spectator, passed away from kidney failure on November 19.

Heffley played Vern, Jack's right hand man, off and on from 1988 to 2003. He dated Jack's mother, Jo, and later married her, returning for Jack's "funeral" in 2002 and for Jack and Jennifer's wedding and goodbye in 2006. Some of you may recall Heffley from his various work on television and in film. He played on "Simon and Simon", "Matlock", "Murder She Wrote",the now defunct soap opera, "Santa Barbara", in 1985, "Heart to Heart", "Barnaby Jones", "Emergency!", and many others.

The 81 year old actor was on dialysis before his passing and was said to still have been a friend of Matthew Ashford.
