Carly tries to touch Melanie at the courthouse but she backs away. Carly hoped there was a chance for them but Melanie denies there is. They’re even and that’s all Melanie wanted. Carly stops her. "I don’t believe you." Melanie yells that she’s cutting ties with Carly, like she did when she gave her away. Carly sobs how sorry she is. Melanie cries about growing up with a psycho because of her. She did this for her dad, Daniel. Carly’s happy they are growing closer. Philip arrives and takes Melanie out of the courthouse. She explains she didn’t tell him what she was doing because he’d have tried to stop her. He would do anything for her and won’t let anyone hurt her again. They kiss and Philip says he wants to show her a house.
Philip and Melanie wind up at Maggie’s house. Melanie’s surprised. Philip says this could be their new house and carries her over the threshold as she giggles in delight. Philip told Maggie they wanted to help her out with her condition. Now nobody has to know she’s not in remission anymore. Though it’s not a honeymoon cruise, says Philip, Melanie tells him it suits her fine. They kiss and Maggie walks in, thinking she has to learn to knock. Philip leaves to make a few calls and Melanie says she’s returning the favor by moving in. She’s family and if she’s having a bad day, Melanie wants to know. Maggie asks how Melanie’s feeling. She too has good and bad days. Good news is she gets to live with Maggie but the bad news is she had a bad scene with Carly and cut her out of her life. Maggie starts to protest but Melanie says she’s the only mother she needs and that’s why they’ve got to make her healthy. Carly can fall off the face of the earth.
Melanie stops the hearing Justin and Bo prefer Melanie leaves but Carly has no objection to her talking to the judge. Melanie tells the room about her first meetings with Carly and how she’s Carly’s secret love child. Not once has Dr. Manning told her the truth and Melanie’s not sure if Carly’s capable of it. Bo says that’s not how it is. Justin tells Commissioner Brady he’s out of line and Carly asks him to sit down. The judge doesn’t want to have to cite him for contempt, so Bo sits down. Melanie weeps as she goes on to tell them how she learned she was Carly’s child. She saw Carly’s face the night she shot her and knows that it was an accident. Carly has tears streaming down her face when Melanie admits she lied in her first statement. She was hurting, scared and wanted to get back at Carly for giving her away. The judge asks everyone to wait while he considers Melanie’s words. Later, the judge sentences Carly to probation but exonerates her from the shooting. Carly’s happy and tries to thank Melanie but she refuses to allow her to touch her.
Stephanie goes to Nathan at the hospital to talk about them and Melanie.
In her room, Melanie agrees Chelsea can come next time. Billie’s doing really well. Max hates to leave her like this but Melanie promises she’ll be fine, once she leaves the hospital. Daniel interrupts, ready to spring her! She’s thrilled. Daniel asks after Chelsea and gives his regards, and then leaves. Max says he likes Daniel and Melanie says things between them are weird. When Max says it’s time for him go, Melanie whines. "No!" He reminds her he’s a call away and urges her to embrace her new family. They hug while Melanie sobs. Daniel goes to Melanie and notices how close they are. It’s a shame Max couldn’t stay longer. Melanie says he always manages to put things into perspective for her and realizes she never thanked Daniel for saving her life. Daniel was happy to have the chance. Melanie asks if they can leave Dr. Manning out of their relationship. Daniel has a problem with pretending Carly’s not the mother of his child. They ponder what would have happened if Carly hadn’t have given her up. They make plans to get together as a foursome with Chloe and Philip in order for Mel to get to know Daniel and help her figure out who she is. He leaves and takes a call that upsets him.
Daniel gives Melanie her walking papers from the hospital. Carly’s being sentenced today and Daniel asks if Melanie can go to bat for her. Melanie’s confused and thought she had more time to think.
In court, proceedings are underway when Carly formally changes her plea to guilty. DA Woods recommends the maximum sentence. She stands and is about to be sentenced until Melanie rushes in.
Hope goes to Melanie’s hospital bedside to discuss the shooting – as a friend. Melanie says, "You’re not my friend." Hope rephrases. She’s not there as an officer of the law and encourages Melanie not to discount Carly and send her to jail. Melanie can’t believe Hope’s defending the woman having sex with her husband. Hope says Carly would never intentionally hurt her but Melanie reminds Hope that Carly gave her away. Hope thinks Melanie’s doing this out of spite and is sorry for what she has been through in the past. Melanie thinks Carly’s got to pay for giving her to sadistic Trent.
Melanie drops her magazine on the floor of her hospital room and when she’s retrieving it with her back turned from the door, somebody enters the room. She thinks it’s Hope and starts yelling but when she turns around, she sees it’s Max and jumps into his arms, hurting her chest in the process. Max laughs. She’s as bratty as ever. He gets her back into bed and she wants to know all about how he and Chelsea are. Max says they’re fine and wants to discuss Carly and Daniel being her parents. Melanie explains the news and they hug and agree they still feel like siblings and love each other. They banter and Max tells her she’s loyal, sweet, and on the right track to a wonderful life. They discuss Carly and Max thinks Melanie should cut Carly some slack. Melanie pouts and says if he’s going to defend Carly, he can leave!
Melanie finishes a call with Philip and Daniel watches from the door. He leaves her room, unnoticed.
Daniel and Maggie arrive at the hospital and Maggie sees the chief of Neurology. Daniel visits Melanie. They make small talk and Melanie says something went wrong in the gene department. He’s a brilliant, world renowned surgeon and she’s a nursing school dropout. Daniel says she was the best candidate.
Later, Maggie returns, saying they’re starting a course of medication and she’s fine. She heads in to visit Melanie and Maggie accidentally smashes the vase Melanie’s flowers are in and freaks out. Melanie can tell something’s up so Maggie explains about the Myasthenia Gravis and Melanie starts to cry. She has to be okay. They hug.
Brady stops by the nurse’s station and tells Daniel to tell Melanie he stopped by. He has something to do. He’s trying to ask his girlfriend to marry him. Daniel raises an eyebrow.
