Marlena greets John and Ava. Surprised to see Ava there, she's even more confused to see that her portrait is gone. When she comments on it being gone, John retorts, "So were you." He asks if she's there to stay. Sami runs in and hugs Marlena, who tells everyone that Eric's got a few broken bones but is doing fine and sends his love to all. John offers drinks and Ava thanks Marlena for her previous advice. It helped. Marlena is happy for her. When John asks if she's jealous, Marlena quietly reminds him they're still married, but asks that he not expose intimate details of their lives, when he reminds her that they're not sleeping together. She thought he was committed to her but he says he tried. She's still pining for the old John and because she's not interested in the new him, he's moving on. He's getting to know Ava. Sami tells Marlena about the turf war that has blown up between John and Phil and asks her to help John before he does something disastrous. Marlena is shocked to hear about John's warehouse going up in smoke. John tells her he has a plan to fight fire with fire, but she won't like it. He tried to do things her way but it hasn't helped. He's changing tactics. "I'm doing it my way." Marlena responds, "Or is that the Vitali way?" Ava thinks John needs to stand up and fight for what's his. "It's a new beginning," John says, in response to Marlena asking if he no longer values her opinion. John tells her she's in love with somebody else. Marlena agrees. "Then I need to pack my things," she says. After she's gone, Ava wonders if John loves Marlena and thinks he should try harder. He isn't sure it would work out and likes Ava because she has no expectations of him. Ava likes herself with him. She hasn't felt good about herself in a long time! They discuss Ava being in love with Steve and John asks how she stopped being in love with him. She didn't. She felt lost, and they agree, it's probably how Marlena's feeling. John invites her to have a hot tub but she refuses and thanks him for a nice night. She tells him she's available if he needs a friend. After she leaves, John whispers…"Doc."
Marlena prepares to leave the DiMera mansion, while Sami begs her to stay, but she's sorry, she can't. She'll send for her things. She leaves.
Outside the room, Lucas gets a call from Philip. "Mom's in the hospital," he says. Lucas is sick with worry. Marlena comes out of the great room and tells them she's moving out. Sami panics and runs after her while Lucas gets the door. It's Chloe. He can't talk now. His mother's in the hospital and he's going to visit her! "You can't leave," she retorts, and asks where he was when he called, earlier. On the pier? How did he know she was crying? He grins and tells her he's clairvoyant. She's not buying it and he denies it when she asks if he was on the pier!
Ava arrives at the pub to meet Nicole. She tells her that John's intense, yet playful. She asks about EJ. Nicole tells Ava that EJ's too caught up with Sami. Nicole asks if she kissed John. She did. She saw the bedroom, but didn't experience it! They giggle and Ava tells Nicole that Marlena showed up and after a heart to heart with John, she moved out! Nicole and Ava drink to Nic's divorce.
John and Ava finish their tour of the upper floors of the DiMera mansion and Ava comments that it's a lot like the house she grew up in. It suits him. He thinks he was a lot like her father but she tells him he's not. She is happy she grew up having everything a girl could want but her father's generosity came at a price. John asks if he can interest her in a tour of his bedroom. She sniggers and thinks the kitchen would be better.
In the great room, Sami asks Lucas where he was, earlier. He says he messed around on his computer and had dinner, but neglects to mention his time at the pier. Sami loves him and wants him to trust her, no matter what he did. He can't. She slept with EJ! Sami asks for a chance to earn his trust but he's not sure it's possible. She tells him if she found a secret he had, she'd keep quiet. "Until you got angry and threw it in my face," he yells. Sami says she'll keep that in mind the next time he leaves the house. John yells at them to stop bickering and asks for a little peace and quiet in his own mansion. He thinks they're an imposition and wants to have a quiet evening with his lady friend. Sami reminds him he's married to her mother. He calls it technical and Sami asks Ava if there aren't enough single men in Salem. John asks Lucas to get Sami out of the room, and after they've left, Ava comments on the busy household and asks where he met Rolf. John says it's a long story and Rolf shows Hope in, but instead of using his own natural German accent, he tries his hand at the English one he's been practicing! Hope tells John she has bad news. His warehouse has been burned to the ground. Ava apologizes and John growls, "Philip." Lucas watches from a crack in the door as John flashes back to discussing how Philip planted the coke in John's shipment. Hope says he'll have insurance but John and Ava both know that he'll never get it, because the warehouse contents were impounded. John wants to go to the warehouse but Hope begs him to stay out of it. Let the police deal with it. John will take care of Philip, he says. "One way or another." Lucas leaves the doorway and Hope leaves and John tells Ava he's not going to stand by and watch Phil ruin his business, when it's all he has. Ava thinks he should be proud of his accomplishments. She finds it sexy when a man knows how to take care of business and kisses him passionately to show him!
Outside the room, Lucas paces. Sami finds him and again asks him to trust her. He has no secrets that he'd like to divulge, he says. She knows it's hard for him to be trapped there, and this prompts him to flash back to taking the purchased device and fixing it so he could leave the house.
Marlena arrives at the Kiriakis mansion as Ava asks John why he didn't play dirty. She tells Ava it's because she didn't want him to.
At Kiriakis mansion, Sami hides the brown paper bag that holds the device Lucas purchased to interfere with his ankle bracelet. Rolf brings Ava into the great room, fawning over her beauty. John asks Sami for privacy, and introduces Sami. Sami makes it a point to remind Ava that John's married. Ava calls Sami a little spitfire and John again requests privacy. Sami takes a photo of them with her cell phone and tells him she can email it to her mother. "I'm sure she'll be happy to know how you're pining away for her," she says and slams the door on her way out. She takes a call from Roman, who wants to talk with Lucas. She covers for him. He's changing the babies. When Roman says he'll drop by, Sami panics!
In the great room, John and Ava sample wine as they listen to music. Ava asks John if he still loves his wife. John says their relationship is complicated and he doesn't remember much. His past relationships are meaningless. Ava thinks it's sad and thinks he should try harder. She tries to make a point by using her father but trails off, feeling uncomfortable speaking of him. She tells him she's been here to get advice from Marlena and isn't keen on stabbing another woman in the back. John thinks Marlena's in love with a man who no longer exists. Talk turns to Martino again and John gives her sympathy. John tells her he had no choice with his memories. They were stolen. Sometimes it burns him and other times it's liberating.
Outside the great room, Sami paces. When Roman arrives, she runs off to take care of the twins, leaving Roman confused as to where Lucas is.
Rolf serves Ava and John dinner in the great room and Rolf falls over himself with compliments for Ava. They decide they've got a lot in common but John's envious of Ava for having a sense of who she once was. He admits his frustration at times, over not knowing who he was. Ava thinks they can help each other to discover themselves. They toast to this and agree, they had a great time tonight. John asks to kiss her. She'd like that, and he moves in for a kiss, and then takes her on a tour of the mansion. On the way, they bump into Sami and Roman and Sami calls John a bastard. Roman thinks Sami's giving him the run around concerning Lucas, but just then, Lucas makes his appearance.
Nicole and Eva arrive at Java Café, Nicole whips out a flask filled with booze, but Ava declines it. She didn't have this place in mind when she wanted to party. They've exhausted every other place and a Monday night in Salem is a drag. They refuse to go home until they have some fun and decide to leave the café and have some real fun.
Ava and Nicole find themselves with two sexy men at Ava's hotel, Barrie and Fabio. They're at the Inn for a Men's Fitness Convention. Ava mixes martini's and Nicole tells the guys she's into long term investment strategies, while Ava's in between jobs. The guys ask if they're interested in checking out their equipment, later! Nicole is very interested, and they start dancing, but Nicole can't get her mind off EJ, and their kiss. Ava flashes back to her discussion with John, and his offer of a dinner date. They get rid of the guys and Ava tells Nicole they were not what they needed. Nicole agrees, and they decide to keep drinking on their own and Ava tells Nicole that though she'll always have a soft spot for Steve, they're both different and she's not interested, but she's on the market. She recalls John's interest in her. Nicole laughs and tells her about her date with John. They discuss how much he has changed and Ava calls him unpredictable, in a good way. Nicole says though he's married to Marlena, they're not together.
At the pier, Max yells to John, "You want a piece of me, old man?" Stephanie stops Max, who tells her that John's scum and is trafficking drugs. Stephanie forces him to leave, while Ava arrives at the pier. John flashes back to being held by Stefano. Ava asks if he's okay, but he tells her to go away. She refuses and figures she knows what he's going through. "I know a fellow mental case when I see one." John knows her and grins that she holds people hostage. Ava has read about him too, "John Black, resident drug dealer!" Neither of them is afraid of what's to become of them, and Ava asks if he wants company. "No," John says. He doesn't like to talk. They banter and Ava flirts. She's been through a lot as well and wants to help. John laughs and thinks she's the only person in this town who could help him. Since he won' talk, Ava tells him about Dr. Nusbaum, when John asks. He's surprised that everything he read was true and empathizes. He tells her a doctor had a hand in making him a different person, too. He tells her he isn't the man he was - a boy scout, and likes to think he's more unpredictable and perhaps more interesting! "Or not," he says and tells her he has issues connecting with those who knew him previously. He calls himself beyond help and wants to leave, but she asks him to stay. John feels less uncomfortable talking with her, he says. She'll take that as a compliment and feels the same. Abe comes across the two and asks if Ava used her contacts to help John get the cocaine. Ava denies this. Abe reminds John his bail can be revoked at any time and stalks away. John invites Ava to dinner, but she doesn't date married men. She leaves the pier.
Marlena gets herself a drink, in the great room at the mansion. She flashes back to her discussion with Roman about giving up on John and about how she feels the drugs were planted in John's shipment. Ava arrives at her door and Marlena greets her coldly. Ava tells her that her lawyer, EJ, sent her to Marlena for therapy. Marlena thinks it was inappropriate for her to arrive at her home. She should call and make an appointment. Ava's desperate and begs her to talk, so Marlena reluctantly takes her into the great room, but admits she's not sure she's the right person to talk to her, because of her involvement in the crash and her Brady friends. Ava apologizes but Marlena took an oath, so she'll listen. Ava tells Marlena about the drugs her dad paid Nusbaum to give her in order to make her crazy. Ava tells Marlena that she still feels terrible for her actions, even though drugs were involved. Marlena thinks she can get past this if she truly wants to and flashes back to the plane crashing. She says she can't be objective. Marlena knew of Martino and believes what he did to Ava and calls it inexcusable. Ava cries that he took away half her life and she's not sure how to deal with it. She looks for closure. Marlena isn't sure she'll get it but reminds her she's free and can choose to live her life on her own terms. Ava isn't even sure who she is and says she isn't sure she even loves Steve anymore. Her reason for living is gone and she's not sure what to do with that. Marlena thinks it's good not to live in the past. Ava may go to jail, she confesses, but Marlena still thinks she's on the right path. She's certain she can find what she's looking for and tries to give her name of a good therapist. Ava will call her office for it in the morning. She thanks Marlena for listening and sees herself out, leaving Marlena puzzled.
