Acquired Taste!

Daniel finds Chloe working out at the gym and helps her fix her form with using weights. Chloe is surprised. "Is there anything you don't know how to do?" He tells her, "Opera singing!" They discuss Kate and how Chloe thinks she's lucky to have him as her doctor, until Philip interrupts. "Maybe not!" Philip thinks that Daniel is abandoning Kate, who is having terrible side effects from the chemo. Daniel reminds him that they knew this would happen and says Dr. Knapp is taking over for him so he can have a break. Chloe takes Philip aside and tells him Daniel's doing the best he can and that he's an excellent doctor and if Kate trusts him, that should be worth something. She encourages him to apologize to Daniel, so he does. When Philip goes off to take a call, Chloe goes to Daniel and says he doesn't understand the randomness of life-threatening illnesses. He can't get used to this. Chloe asks, "You really love her, don't you?" Later, Chloe tells him she was out of line for asking and thanks him for being so nice to Philip. Daniel calls his relationship with Kate complicated. She calls her situation very domestic and different. "Life is good," she grins, but Daniel asks, "But not great?" Chloe says she's lucky to have both Lucas and Allie, but admits sometimes she misses traveling. She had an exciting life in Europe that was a little lonely, but always exciting! She misses singing, but Daniel thinks she could have the best of both worlds. He misses the ocean and surfing and says surfing is in his blood. "So you're saying we can have our cake and eat it too?" Daniel replies, "Damned right!" Lucas wouldn't want her to give up her dream. Chloe smiles. Nicole would say the same thing. They discuss how Nicole's in jail for Trent's murder but Chloe knows she's innocent. Nicole's kind and caring and important to her. Chloe admits she's not exactly Ms. Popularity, but Daniel says maybe she's an acquired taste and tells her that's a compliment. "So are you by any chance airing the taste," she asks. Daniel says, "Definitely." Chloe calls this good for her ego, but Kate wouldn't like it. Daniel says he'll try to talk to Kate about her. Chloe's thankful.

BFF?

Philip goes to Kate's room and wakes her up by accident. Kate thinks she has lost track of time and they discuss how grown up Philip is. "A big mogul." Philip would give it all up to be back in the first grade. "Those were great times," he remembers and says he thought she was invincible. She had all the answers. "And you could believe I was immortal. Much to my shock, I'm not," Kate says. She may not have much more time. Philip refuses to believe this and they profess their love for each other. Kate soon falls asleep and Philip leaves, while Daniel sits with her. He accidentally wakes her and she asks how the treatment is doing. He tells her it's too early to say, though she's doing well. They need to moderate it because the treatment is so aggressive. Philip returns but stops at the door and listens as Daniel says she has given him hope. She says no matter what happens, she'll always know that he did all he could to save her, but what he may never know is how much it means to her. Later, he tells Daniel he's happy with the peace they've made and he asks that whatever happens with Kate, he won't get involved with their relationship. "Just save her," he pleads. Later, Daniel goes to an unconscious Kate and tells her that her kids, Chelsea and even him, need her. "Come back to me," he says.

Two Tigers and a Ball of Twine.

Kate paints her fingernails as Daniel looks over her chart. She recalls the first time she painted them and how sophisticated she felt. Daniel says she has another half hour of Chemo. Kate's tired, so Daniel leaves her. Kate reads and a nurse interrupts.

Outside her room, Chloe and Lucas arrive and Lucas has questions for Daniel. He wonders what Kate's odds are at beating this. He knows that it depends on early detection and how the patient responds to treatment. Daniel agrees that's true but isn't sure about her odds. There are too many variables, he tells Lucas and Chloe, but admits the odds aren't good, but Kate has a lot to live for and is going through an aggressive treatment. "It's her best chance to survive," he says and invites Lucas to call him anytime to discuss it. Chloe supports Lucas and thinks Kate will get through this. They hug, and when the nurse leaves Kate's room, Lucas goes in alone, to see her.

In her room, Kate continues to read until Lucas arrives. She welcomes him to the penthouse and laughs. She says it's feeling like a mini-vacation, but Lucas thinks she's trying to prove how strong she is. He asks her to use her energy to fight. He returns to Chloe and asks if she'd talk to his mother about fighting cancer while he goes to the gift shop to get her a present. Chloe's skeptical that Kate will want to see her but agrees to it. She goes inside, but Kate tells her to get out! Chloe cares for Lucas and knows she means a lot to him. She was happy to come in here, she says. Kate apologizes for being so rude and admits she cares more about her kids than herself, probably. Since her illness will be the hardest on Lucas, she'd like to call a truce. She still hasn't forgiven her for breaking Philip's heart. Chloe says that's fine and once she leaves, she stands outside Kate's door, taking deep breaths. Daniel comes upon her. "Are you alright?" She confesses she's a cancer survivor and still takes anti-rejection drugs. She still feels she's on borrowed time. Lucas arrives and they're set to take Allie out trick-or-treating. They plan to take photos for Kate. Daniel asks if they'll return tomorrow and give Kate time to rest this evening. Chloe thanks Daniel for the talk and they leave.

Daniel goes to Kate with the magazine Lucas purchased for her and lies on her bed and visits.

Family Sticks Together!

Chelsea goes to Daniel about Kate. She needs to know what's going to happen to Kate, but Daniel can't discuss her case. Chelsea lashes out that she doesn't understand why he gets to know, but apologizes for ranting and tells him she wishes she could take back the horrible things she said to her grandmother. Daniel knows Kate will forgive her. Chelsea admits Kate's been good to her and feels it's her turn to take care of her. Daniel's impressed that Chelsea made this decision and Chelsea says she can't promise anything, but she'll try. She brings up the betrayal, and says Kate's life is far more important than her petty feelings. Daniel says they're not petty. Chelsea says she developed a crush on him and thinks he did too, but that's all it was. Daniel tries to stop her from talking, but she talks over him and asks him to promise to help save Kate. Later, after Daniel has left, she makes a promise to herself to take care of Kate as Kate did her, during her time in the hospital.

Philip and Lucas arrive at the Kiriakis mansion. By the pool, Kate tells them she's been working hard to get her company off the ground. Lucas says profits are through the roof. Kate tells them she's taking time off. She has lung cancer. Philip hugs her and tells her they'll fight with her and Lucas tells her they love her. Philip has done research and knows they've new, wonderful drugs. Kate needs their help with her business while she's in treatment. Kate asks Philip to release Lucas from his contract so he can run Hearth and Home. Lucas is up for it, but knows she'll be back. He asks for a second opinion, even though Daniel's a great doctor. Kate refuses, but Lucas asks Philip if his father can help them. Philip asks Lucas to allow Kate to decide this herself. Victor's the one who brought Daniel here. He's the best. Kate asks them to put aside their feelings about her relationship with Daniel. Philip says he will but Lucas refuses. Dr. Falk and Dr. Knapp are the best doctors available, Kate tells Lucas, who finally acquiesces. Kate says she already told Billie and Austin and when Daniel arrives, she is ready to go. Lucas pulls Daniel aside and Philip tells Kate he's proud of her strength. Kate admits she's had her moments. She's happy for their support.

Nearby, Lucas confronts Daniel, who tells her that his relationship with Kate won't cause issue with his case.

Kate goes into the hospital for chemotherapy and Dr. Knapp tells her what to expect. Lucas and Philip think they can play the game Boggle, and they all laugh. They used to have matches all the time. Philip and Kate laugh, but Kate says she's fine. She'd rather be alone to watch TV and read. She'll have Daniel call when it's over. The men reluctantly leave, but before Lucas does, he admits he'd rather stay there with her. Kate asks him to talk to Tony and Anna about the new ad campaign. He asks for a rain check on Boggle, and leaves.

Sleeping with a Killer!

Kate arrives at the hospital to Daniel, who wonders why she's there. She tells him she's returning his swim shorts and he asks her to stop waving them around, or he'll have explaining to do! She leans into him as he brings her behind a curtain and tries to kiss him but Daniel says they can't do this. Kate asks if he wants to break it off again, but Daniel asks her to stop. He's feeling crazed about waiting for the results as well. Kate hasn't coughed in over 24 hours and has her appetite back, she says. Daniel's happy to hear that, and she tells him that whether or not she's dying, she wants him, and wants to make love to him. She doesn't want her life under a microscope. They start kissing.

Chelsea asks a nurse if she has seen Dr. Jonas anywhere. The nurse says he was just here a moment ago and is probably nearby. Daniel and Kate stop kissing when Daniel's pager goes off and Chelsea walks in on them. Kate says she should knock before she barges in on a patient. Kate says she's fine, and has something to drop off to Daniel, when Chelsea asks, and Chelsea has documents for him to look over. Daniel has to go up to ICU and asks Chelsea to wait with Kate, for him to return. Chelsea asks what Kate was returning to Daniel. Kate changes the subject and Chelsea admits she was going to call her about their talk in the dressing room at the shop. She spoke with Lexi and says what happened between her and Daniel reminded her of what she went through with Nick and Billie. Chelsea loves Kate so much and got emotional. Chelsea says she knows things with Kate and Daniel are over and she's ready to forgive her and forget. Kate thanks Chelsea and they hug, but she sees Daniels shorts and asks if this is what she's returning to him. She starts to cry and Kate apologizes. Chelsea is hurt and disrespects Kate, who tells her that Daniel and Chelsea are over. It was her decision. She treated it as an adult decision and she's not ashamed of what she's doing. "At your age, I think you should be past temper tantrums," she says. Daniel returns, but stays away, while Chelsea tells Kate that she's selfish and wants her out of her life, forever. Kate asks her to be careful for what she wishes for. Daniel walks in and Kate asks him to read the results. Kate has lung cancer. Chelsea starts to sob.

Hissing at the Wrong Jaguar!

Daniel comes out of the Kiriakis pool, dripping wet and unexpectedly comes face to face with Philip, who yells that this is his house and asks why he's always hanging around. Daniel asks if there's something he wants to get off his chest. Philip hits Daniel and lays him out flat! Later, when Daniel gets up, Philip admits he is angered because he knows that Daniel had sex with Kate right there, poolside! Daniel refuses to discuss this with Philip and asks if he ever thinks of what makes Kate happy. He thinks that he makes Kate happy, and tells Philip he's a vindictive little bastard and won't take anymore of his bull! Philip doesn't hear him and tells Daniel to stay away from his mother, but Daniel says he cares about Kate. He calls her generous, smart and she makes him feel good about himself. "We need each other right now," he finishes. Philip says, "I'm out of it. For her sake."

What have you done, you fool?

Daniel bumps into Chelsea at Java Café. When she can't find her wallet, he kindly buys her a latte and asks if she'd like to have a coffee together. She appears uncomfortable and when she sees Nick arrive, she lies that she's meeting somebody. When he leaves, she watches him as she goes to Nick and asks for a favor. "Have dinner with me, as friends." Nick asks why she doesn't have dinner with Stephanie, and she says Steph's been busy and Morgan's out of town. Nick agrees to it and she invites him to a sushi restaurant near the hospital. Nick is distracted by Melanie making a scene with Max.

Nearby, Melanie and Max heatedly discuss what happened at the cemetery the night Trent was murdered. Max thinks Melanie would have remembered killing him. She's thankful to him for keeping her secret, knowing Stephanie would go to the police if she knew. Max admits he spilled her secret to Stephanie, but he's certain she won't tell anyone. Melanie reminds him that Stephanie hates her and would do what it takes to get her out of his life. Max disagrees and they argue and Melanie runs out, upset.

Daniel arrives at the hospital to examine Nicole. She hasn't had cramping or pain, just a headache. EJ waits outside while Nicole is examined and she tells Daniel that she has fluttering now and again. Daniel thinks they can be baby flutters. Nicole reminds him that she was told she could never have kids, so this baby is a miracle and she's terrified something could be wrong. Daniel calls her young and healthy, and Nicole tells him she knows what he's thinking, that she's using her pregnancy to get EJ to pay attention to her. She admits she is, but the flutters do worry her. She cries that she can't lose the baby. Later, Daniel gives her good news. She's healthy. Nicole apologizes for being so intense and promises to keep the stress down. Daniel comments that EJ seems pretty committed to her and the baby and she agrees and says EJ takes fatherhood seriously. Daniel goes off to find the father-to-be, who is waiting nervously, by the nurse's station. He is worried, but Daniel reassures him that Nicole's fine. A fetus is pretty resilient and the only reason why a woman would miscarry is if there was something already wrong. EJ seems happy to hear this and goes back to Nicole.
